With my woods gun I always load hardcast on the belief that with wildlife you need penetration, but it always bugs me because I know that even in the woods the biggest threats are two leggers. If I ever do need the gun I'll probably want hollowpoints.
So how bad would HP be on wildlife? Say in a suitable caliber, either 357 or 10mm or 44mag, but with something like XTP or even HST. |

Just alternate every other round in your mag.

The XTP tends to penetrate far better than any other brand of rapidly expanding hollowpoint.

what type of wildlife?
we've been using 357sig in ranger jhp for over ten years to put down deer with good effect. |

I shoot things I don't have to clean, predators and prairie dogs. Hollow points work great! Hides aren't worth picking up anyway.

I only change out my carry ammo if i need to meet hunting regs.

The most deadly wild life out there is bees, and a good JHP will easily drop a bee. Also bears and big cats. Carry a JHP appropriate for two legged dangers, and it will stop four legged dangers. Just use a heavy for caliber JHP.

I live without grizzly so no issues with HST when I’m hiking.

I am really not much of a hunter but when you do a lot of reading there are many examples of hollow points failing for some reason or another . Low velocity it doesn't open at all or much , to much velocity and they tend to explode , fall apart if you hit a large bone---whatever.
Big square nose lead bullets just seem to plow through causing lots of damage with any decent hit. Not talking about using FMJ for hunting but rather a big old soft point or cast semi wadcutter to plow along and get the job done. |
|
|
If it works on critters, it works on people.
My woods gun carries hard cast lead always. I ain't trusting a JHP out of a handgun to stop a pissed off FL boar. |

I don't sweat it. Big meplates work really well on game. They'll work just fine on bad guys too

After shooting a deer with a .44 magnum hollow point, I can personally say that a 2 legged animal would not continue to be a threat.
You don't want to get shot with a .44 magnum hollow point. |

I can say that a .410 JHP out of my 20" Marlin did complete penetration on a grey squirrel.

I will say that a 240 or 250 grain .454 XTP is like the hammer of the Gods on White tails.
