Thx, I've been looking for that.
Now, I know what model of 590a1 to search for. I've been looking for a 18.5 or 14(if I can find a class 3 guy around here worth a salt). BK |
very helpful links... thank you. |
You bet mjsemtex. I'm very grateful for the tack, as it will allow me to add to it in the hopes of making it a one-stop Mossberg reference point. |
I picked up a "used" 590A1 HBAR, GRS, 18.5 at a local small gunshop for $300.. (it still had the packing grease if you want to call that used)
what is a "clean out tube" as mentioned in the listing? I have never heard of it... I love this shotgun - I always have been a Remington 870P type of guy but after seeing how the safety was setup and the overall construction - I am sold on the Mossberg 590's |
A word of advice: make sure you carefully clean out all of that crap. Mine had so much junk in it (straight from the factory) that I had to use a honing and polishing rig to get all of it out. Took me several days to get it.
Look at the end of the mag tube on your 590A1. That cap unscrews so that you can easily clean out the mag tube without totally taking the shotgun down. It is closer to how an 870 is set up as opposed to the 500, which has one of the crappiest mag tube and barrel arrangements ever designed.
That's pretty much where I was 7 years ago. Now go take a look at the 930SPX if you want to see a very nice Mossberg autoloader. |

Still a tool.

O_DubhGhaill, you've once again done a great job with this post.

Thanks very much m24shooter -- DMR helped a great deal too.
Now that's unusual -- got a part number to add to the list? . I don't see the plastic spacer in the area fore of the heatshield screws -- interesting if this came straight from Mossberg like this. Anyways, what a find!

That is a government contract model, hopefully a over run

hello.
i just purchased my M590A1 (brand new in the box from 2006) heres what it says on the end of the box: Mossberg 51663 12 GAUGE 590A1 PARKERIZED BBL1 20.0" GRS HEAVY BARREL CYL BORE CHOKE GHOST RING SIGHT (SERIAL #) ACCESSORY LUG INCLUDED 07/13/2006 im confused because your list in the first post says that a 51663 is a matt blue finish? |
I believe matte blue replaced parkerization for those models in 2007 -- my 2007 51663 is matte blue.
any verification of this? |
Why yes, Mossberg customer service: 1-800-363-3555. |
thanks!
next question....where can i get a tritium front sight for my 590a1? |
Meprolight "Mossberg Night Sight," Brownells Part #387-400-500, found here |
your the man!
one more question....for now, haha what do i need to attach a 2-point sling to the factory mossberg sling post's? alot of the 1.25" slings i see are using either an aftermarket sling mount, or they have "C" shaped rings through the factory sling post's...how do i attach a sling to the factory post's? |
"AR-15 Quick Release Sling Swivels," Brownells Part #923-000-029, found here. These are like Uncle Mike's, but parked, and work perfectly. |
thanks again!
i picked up a 2-point browning rifle sling today (has the uncle mikes swivel's) works great, and fits great.
im glad i chose the rifle sling over the shotgun sling....the rifle sling is a perfect length. the shotgun one would have been way to much extra material flopping around. i also picked up a red head, slip-over side saddle for $5...its a super tight fit, and i had to cut a small hole in it for the sling stud in the stock...but it fit's great, and i like the fact that it weigh's nothing, and holds 5 shell's very well....makes quick loading very easy. this is a very imformative thread for the 590A1's....probably the most informative ive found. i wonder if we could start a list of 590A1 modification's? (like the VCS safety button, aftermarket follower's, and side saddle's, etc..etc..etc..) thanks for all of the great information |
Thanks! Now I know that I own a model 51517-7! So... Where can I find a shorter stock for this thing? Brownells doesn't seem to have one for the 590/500. Chris |
Blessent mon coeur d'une languer monotone.
I think I have an oddball:
Factory 14" SBS 500a marked reciever (listed as a "590" on the form 4) 14" heavy, cylinderbore GRS speedfeed Plastic triggerguard and safety |
You can find Hogue shortstocks at Brownells here. BTW, I have several NoIV Mk I, I*, and 2s... -- "Rules? There are no rules. We were out on the Velt, fighting the Boer as he fought us. What rule did we apply, Sir? We applied Rule .303. We caught them and shot them APPLYING RULE .303!" -- 'Breaker' Morant. |
Jeepdriver, Is your Mossberg marked as a 590? Ill add a pic of mine. |
I ordered, (Jensen Arms) a 51668 model. It is the Speedfeed stock version of the 590A1. I called Mossberg just to double check a couple of things and found that the CSR I spoke too could not find that model number in their database. I told him it might be under the LE/Mil listings but he insisted that the model, (51668) does not actually exist. I will be very interested to see the gun on Tuesday and see what model it really is. Jensen Arms verified that it is in fact a 51668 but Mossberg doesn't list that model. I told him it just may be a sub-model to the 51663 but he still couldn't find it.
Ideas? |
You spoke with a Mossberg rep? I'd have asked to speak with a supe or simply hung-up, redialed, and hoped to speak with a different customer service rep. I have found the 51668 hard to find, but just about every LE dealer I spoke with knew it existed by that number.... Say, it's Tuesday, what did you receive? |
What I received is a disappointment. When I opened the box at the FFL dealer, there was no rear sight on the gun. It's a 51668 but the trigger is plastic and so is the safety. The barrel is the heavy and the front sight is there, (red tip) but the rear sight was nowhere to be found. The box says it is a model 51668, speedfeed stock and GRS, but other than that I 'm very bummed out about it. I am going to call Mossberg tomorrow and find out why mine doesn't have the things it is supposed to have. I really wanted the metal trigger assembly. I'll buy a Vang safety so that's no big deal but where is my rear sight? I thought all 590A1 models had the metal triggers and safeties? It also says on the box this is a 590A1. I'll probably see if I can send it back to Mossberg. I'll keep you posted. Oyea the recoil pad is the worst fitting abortion you could imagine. It overhangs one side of the stock by 1/8" and is that short on the other side. Really poor quality. I should have bought the FN SLP I was looking at.
ETA: Mine is also Parkerized, not matte. Even says parkerized on the box. Another EA: Just got off the phone with a complete ass hole at Mossberg.. He wanted to charge me $24 for a rear sight. Got that fixed and he is sending me one for free. You would have thought I was asking for his first born child. He also said that the 51668 comes with a plastic trigger and safety. may call back later a try to get another CSR because this idiot was next to useless. I'll order the metal trigger from Brownells if I can't get Mossberg to do it. I've bought my last Mossberg. Not only is the product junk, but their employees are incompetent a-holes. Very disappointed. I wonder if 12 gauge shells will fit in it? |
Sounds like a total abortion. I've never heard of this happening to anyone. No sight?!?! 590A1s feature metal trigger assemblies and safeties, period. Some questions I have: are you certain this gun came directly from the factory to Jensen Arms (factory packaging inside, yellow cable lock in sealed bag, sealed manual, factory sticker on the stock, etc...)? How many people had their hands on it before you opened the package? Why didn't you refuse it and let Jensen Arms handle this for you? Also, you should record the date and time of your call and always get the name of the person answering the phone before you even begin to explain your problem, then ask for a supervisor when that customer service rep isn't working out. Check the date of manufacture with Mossberg from the serial number (they'll do this via e-mail within a day or two) -- something sounds mighty wrong with this entire transaction and I'd investigate before I put it all in Mossberg's lap...I'd definitely like to know WTF happened to you here...

As sands through the hourglass, so goes the saga of chuckles and his mossberg.
I called Mossberg again this AM and spoke to a CSR that knew what he was doing. Yes mine should have metal trigger and safety. He said the previous rep had confused it with the 50668. It also should have had the rear ghost ring sight. He was incredulous that it got shipped like that. He asked for the packer number and mfg date from the box too. (mfg 04/08/08),It was still sealed from the factory with all stuff it is supposed to have. There was never a sight installed. The 4 small screws on top of the receiver were intact and had never been messed with. Anyway. he had me send it back and promised that they would make it as it is supposed to be. Metal trigger, safety, sight. He also said that for my trouble , they would send a nice gift to me. He promised it back within 10 days and said he would get their best armorer to do a tune and smooth job on it. Right after I got off the phone with Mossberg, the dealer that sold it to me called. He was also surprised and disappointed in what I got. He said they don't usually examine guns that are factory sealed. He said he would fax me a label and I could return it to him and he would replace it immediately. He said from now on he will look before they just pull a box off the shelf and send it. He was very nice and offered to do anything I wanted done. He said he had received 20 at one time and was going to look at all of them. He one picked out for me if I opted to switch. I opted to send it to Mossberg to avoid the FFL thing again with a new gun. Jensen Firearms in CO is very GTG. He said remind him next time I buy a gun and he will get me free shipping and a discount for sticking with him. Great service from both. I'll post again when I get it back from Mos. In theory, all will end up right with chuckles' mossy. ETA: And it is parkerized. It looks and feels like Park, and it says on the box and the CSR told me that mine is parked. It is on it's way via fedex to Eagle Pass as we converse. |
Outstanding. Now that's more like it! Your persistence paid off -- I have always found that if you don't get what you need from a CSR, don't waste more time, but simply get the supe or another rep. The Mossberg rep you finally spoke with sounds more like the reps I've dealt with there, professional, courteous, apologetic when need be, etc., and willing to make things right. Sounds like his reaction was in line with mine above! One thing though, an '08 590A1 should be matte blue from what I understand -- no matter, it sounds like you'll be more than good to go when you get the gun back and in incredibly rapid turnaround time too. Good on you 2chuckles...let us know about the gun you get back. |
Stamped 590-A1 on the left side of the receiver. |
Got my 51668 back today. Right about 13 days door to door. They did a really nice job on it. Action is slicker than snot and trigger is very nice. Now sports the GRS rear sight, metal trigger assembly and metal safety. I also got a nice Mossberg embrodered case for it for my trouble. The CSR told me he also test fired it and they sighted it in using Federal Tru-Ball slugs and it was perfect. I'm now a happy camper, of course I should have gotten it like this from the outset. Alls well that ends well. Now off to the range this Friday to use up some of that nice Federal LE 00 buck I bought from Ammo to go.
I have ordered a Knoxx Comp-Stock for mine and should have that in time for my range visit. |

51660-0 -- Synthetic -- 20" -- Bead -- CYL -- 9
If I read this right, this model is parkerized, correct?? |

Mossberg no longer parks stuff. It is now matte blue or somesuch.

I was able to track down my referances for shotgun models:
Standard issue Type II Mossbergs: M-500 NSN 1005-01-085-1032 (close to 50411-9 w/o pistol grip) M-500S NSN 1005-01-295-1832 Army Model (50411-9) Barrel attached with thumb screw. Limited numbers will also be found in use with the USMC and Navy. 500A1 NSN 1005-01-371-4462 w/17" barrel (Close to 51411-8) 500A2 NSN 1005-01-371-5639 w/20" barrel (Close to 51411-8) Barrel attached with magazine cap and mag tube clean out (aka 590). The USMC is the primary user of the A1/A2 barrel attachment models . I believe the primary model in USMC/Navy service is the A1, not the A2. Standard Issue Type I Mossbergs: 590 NSN 1005-01-251-8578 Amy/USMC (Close to 51660-0 or 50660-1 in that it has a bayonet lug and heat shield). Very few in service, most likely to be found with MP units and SOF. |

Greetings English. What restrictions currently apply to shotgun ownership there in the UK and what is "UK legal"? What restrictions apply to actually using your shotgun for home/personal defence? Lastly, what on shotgunearth is that contraption at the muzzle? |

In addition to wondering if we should check airport parking lots for you I was wondering that as well. |

Shotguns fall into two categories, Section 1, any smooth bore self loading or pump action gun with a barrel no less than 24" in length and an overall length of 40" not including any folding stocks, there is no restriction on magazine capacity or detachable mags, or any other smooth bore gun with a barrel less than 24" you must show good reason to the local federali's for having one, Section 2, any smooth bore gun with a barrel no less than 24" in length and an overall length of 40" not including any folding stocks, and not capable of holding more than two cartridges in a non detachable magazine, the local federali's must prove you shouldn't have one... Where self defence is concerned, the gun must be locked up in a steel cabinet at all times unless you happen to be working on or cleaning the gun, and you can only act with reasonable force, ie if the person comes at you punching and kicking it's not quite cricket to give him both barrels, but if he came at you armed to the teeth and you felt your life was in danger, then you may not go to jail.... Thirdly, the thing that sticks up at the end... its the extension that makes the barrel 24+" and therefore legal... |

I have a update for your model numbers. I have Model 50685 it is a factory 14" barrel blue 590 with Davis/Mossberg Speedfeed stock. Hope this helps everyone.

Ever heard of the 590DA1? I have one. It's a 590A1 with 18.5" modified choke bbl, bead sight, synthetic stock, and a double action trigger. Serial DA0024##, I can't find any info online about how many of these were made, or if Mossy still makes them.
Apparently, these were intended for PD's so that officers wouldn't be surprised by the light trigger on their shotgun, compared to the heavy DA trigger on their sidearm. So, a hardware solution to a software problem. I got mine at a pawn shop for $300. |
I was going to post about the same thing. I purchased a low serial number 590DA1 last year new with the regular stock and ghost ring sites. Haven't seen anything on these shotties out there.

O_DubhGhaill,
This is what I have, and I don't see it on your list. Knew what I wanted, and MLGS ordered it. These are the specs - from the box label that I saved. #53663 12 g 590DA1 20" barrel Ghost ring sights Heavy wall barrel Modified choke Parkerized 9 shot I added a non-shell holding Speedfeed, and side saddle, and scraped about half of that orange paint off the front sight - there was way too much. Can't remember if I read it or someone told me, but IIRC they don't manuf this one anymore. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––- For you with the DA gun - I have one, and I consider that DA trigger the same as a Glock, Sig, etc trigger. I leave the safety off - unless we're bouncing around in the back of the truck. |

Thanks gents, list is updated to reflect the four DA models, as well as a link to the DA Owner's Manual. Let me know if these feature metal trigger housings and safety...

Maybe someone can help me here, as I'm not really a shotgun guy.
My father-n-law and I went out to the range today to shoot his 590 for his first time. We could only load 5+1 rounds and not 8+1 like the box says. Any idea to what the problem is? Thanks for any input. Brian |
