What kind of load does everyone use for 80's or 82's? I just got a WOA upper 1:7 and I want to shoot the heavier bullet when I can.

Go with VV540 if you can find some.
You'll get the highest vel with the lowest pressure,, did I say accurate? It is.

I've used the following:

20" service rifle bbl...

23.5 N135
24.0 AA2520
24.5 N140

26" match rifle bbl

25.0 N540

John Holliger recommends  80 gn Sierra Matchkings with 24.5 gns of RE-15 loaded to 2.470" for his 1:7 Service rifle barrels.  It works very well for me also.  For the record he recommends the same charge for 69 gn Sierra Matchkings but loaded to magazine length.

Well here we go again on the Wilson 1 in 8 twist barrels vs. the 1 in 7's. Look, they are all button rifled barrels. DUH! Call them what you want! There is no true twist rate on button rifled barrels regardless of where or whom you purchased your Wilson barrel from!

On the 80 Sierra or the Nosler 80gr. Keep them off the lands by .010" to .020" and push them out of your "Wilson" barrel with 24.6 gr. of RE-15. For the lowest SD or ES your lot number of primers will be the main ingredient! In my experience Federal 205 M has been the most consistent with Remington 7 1/2 BR being a close second. Today, with the way reloading component availability is, work up loads with what ever primer you can get!

While on the Wilson barrel topic, it is my recommendation that you get the SAAMI spec chamber. While the Wylde may be the most "popular" it has a long throat. Meaning less barrel life with "Wilson's". My second chamber choice would be the CLE chamber. When buying a barrel today for accuracy and life (more rounds), those that offer the NATO chamber would be my last choice! I'll also add that you should check your NEW barrel's chamber lead so that you don't end up with the smith's "reamer of the day". Keep'em honest!

Load development. Stick with RE15 and LC brass and you will find a accurate and consistent load much faster!

N150 loads for the 80?

N150 is too slow for use with the .223/80 grain bullets. Not a good choice at all.

See the New Jersey Highpower Page, about halfway down the page.  There is ONE N150 load listed.

NOTE:  I do not use 150 at all - I shoot CMR100

24.5 RL 15 w/ a SMK 80 loaded to just under the lands seems to be a X-ring quality load, using LC brass and Fed. 205 primers, not the match primers, just what I had sitting on the shelf when the season started. never had a problem

I also use the same powder/primer/brass for my close stuff, pushing a 69 Nosler, no issues till my last match, started getting pressure signs. but I havnt shot since so I havnt bothered reseting my load data.

There's a reason for the pressure going up, you need to find out what it is.
Could be powder lot, or could be carbon ring in the throat,, been shooting moly with wax?
RE 15 usually doesn't leave a ring in the throat, but wax on the moliied bullets do.

For my RRA Wylde chambered Wilson barrel.  It is accurate, but I probably do not get the velocity that you guys have using the Vit, or the RE-15.

80 gr. Sierra hpbt
205m primer
L.C. case
24.0 gr. Varget
OAL 2.500 - .020 off the lands.
AV velocity = 2,669 fps.

FWIW, 25.5 of N150 gets you 2820Fps, smooth cycle and in MY RIFLE no preassure signs and X ring stickiness.

That 24.5 gns of RL-15 yielded 2866 fps in my 1:7 Wilson, WCC 84 cases, WSR primer, 80 gn SMK 2.470" OAL, Wylde chamber

I was getting 2850 from that load,(24.5 re15) and blown primers, so I switched to N150.

I agree it is a hot load.  I  am in the cool mountains of PA and haven't had trouble.  I have been going to back this down a bit when this lot is shot up.

I am in GA and  with 90% @ 95 degrees or better it is hot.... Rifle likes the N150 better though. 24.1 of N140 will get about 2750 or so and not give pressure signs, but it is not as accurate in my rifle. not as smooth as the n150 either. you should try it if you have any of that powder. Start at about 25 and go up in tenths. I know Match rifle AR guys loading over 26 grains in it. After posting here I ran into a guy at the local range using it. apparently is a common use powder for Match rifles in 223. Gas guns.

That's very interesting, I was not aware of that. I have not heared of anybody using N150 in their AR's. It is generally considered a somewhat slower powder of the 4350 type, not usually associated with a small case like the .223. Sierra does not even list it in the their charts for AR's nor bolt guns for use with the 80 grain bullet. I guess you never know until you try. Good luck.

How far off of the lands should I start with a 80grn SMK?

8/8/2009 9:40:04 PM EDT

load it to the published OAL and shoot it. or go 15 thou off, either way it will shoot good and you will never notice the differencce other than the time it took you to figure it out.

I usually load mine 25 thous off but I've shot them, unintentionally, 100 thous off. 80 SMKs actually like to jump a little.

I have a WOA Service Rifle upper
Load I'm using is:

Winchester Factory Case
Remington 7 1/2 Primer
Sierra MK #9390 non moly
VV N140 24gr. (YOUR LOAD MAY VARY)
COAL 2.460

Works great out of my upper.

RRA AR15 National Match 20" with Wylde cut chamber
WW new brass
Remington 7 1/2 BR primers
Sierra 77gMK
22gr Varget
Seated OAL 2.250
200/300yd load
Five shot string velocities:
2420
2421
2443
2451
2489
ES 69
SD 25.1

I know this is an 80gr load thread but am I way off on the charge here? I was thinking I should be seeing in the neighborhood of 2600fps with this charge.

Generally speaking, 22 grains of Varget with a 77 gr. SMK is a light load. I use 24 grains of Varget with that combination.

Pretty sure you need to make at least 2600 with a 77 or an 80. 24.1 of N140 gets me 2750 from a poly barrel and 2700 with the RRA barrel. The AMU load as stated is breaking 2900.

That bullet should do a lot better for you the closer you get to 24.0 grains of Varget.  I did not see 2,600 fps from the 77 smk until I worked up to 23.5 grs of Varget.  Some manuals state 23.7 grs as max load, but 24.0 has been my standard for a while from my RRA NM, with no signs of pressure, just good accuracy.  It just so happens that 24.0 grns of Varget works well for the 80's also, but seated out to .020 from the lands.

Reloader 15 should be a spankin powder with the 77's,  the 75s will do 2900 with a  hefty load of 24.8 or more,  and no pressure for me.  I went with the N140 for a different rifle and shoot the 75's and RE15 in the other. My NM will not shoot the 77's well at all, the poly barreled one does exceptionally well.  and the 75's do better in the Wilson than the poly.  The 69 is still SR king though...

Ok range update. Worked up some more loads for the 77 and 80gr SMK.

77gr SMK:

OAL 2.255
24.0gr Varget
Avg Vel 2644
ES of 15.0

Very nice load. Didn't bother going higher than 24gr. No pressure signs that I could tell.

80gr SMK

.010 jump
25.0gr Varget
Avg Vel 2730

No signs of over pressuring with this load. Only shot two rounds of this charge because I honestly thought the rifle was going to start spitting primers. Seemed like the 24.5gr was the best for this bullet. It yielded 2680fps with ES of 7. Also, I would feel very comfortable knowing that I have a cushion staying in a safe load zone.

24.5 is a great load and I have been using it for years.
