Cold bore shot > Precision Rifle Training

Over the past several weeks I have been competing in a precision .22 rifle league. I shoot at 50yds in the "scoped target" class using a Ruger 10/22 with an ER Shaw 18" barrel and a Hogue stock. I have found that I need to fire 3 rounds before it will be on POA/POI. This occurs when I first fire it for the day or when it sits while we re-target(10mins?). I am new to precision firing:

-Does this sound normal?
-How do you deal with it?
-Will the cold bore shot be consistant?
-Tips/tricks?

I am using Wolf, which is being used by 99% of the other shooters there with great success. Very consistent stuff once I get those 3 shots out.

that is not uncommon in smallbore. most people shooting smallbore rifle in NRA or international 3 position or prone matches will usually send several rounds into the berm before firing the first sighter. hurts when one is sending Eley Tenex into the berm though!

Well, I found out that I have most likely been shooting the past 6 weeks with a broken cross hair. Didn't notice until I was shooting right into the sunset

. That might have a bit to do with some flyers, how good is Bushnell's customer service?

Do you clean after each match? Rimfires POI will shift slightly when there is less or no lube from teh rounds down the barrel. I shoot IR5050 and i use to clean i learned my lesson.

I also shoot 3 rounds to warm up and get the lube going in the barrels before i shoot my sighters

I am not an expert but I have been reading alot on this so I might be able to regurgitate some help.

After you get your scope issue figured out, maybe try and dry fire a few times before shooting a string and see if things improve. There is some anecdotal evidence that some of the cold bore deviation may be actually more the fault of a "cold shooter". I have started to take a few dry fire shots ahead of time on my .308 to get myself into the groove and it seems to help, if only mentally.

I have seen some folks on rimfire central claim that the different lubes on different brands of .22's will be somehow incompatible with eachother or sill make things inconsistent and they suggest cleaning between brands.

Depending on where you are and the temperature of you gun, I can see how the lube could affect things if it hardens up in the bore between strings. Around here it seems that around 40 deg the lube starts hardening up. I never tested the affect on accuracy, but it affects the function of both my Rugers. Keeping the gun at a consistent temp may help you.
