Ok, so

I've always loved sims. The first one was like in the late 80's called FATS. Recently, I got the opportunity to try something similar at Bud's in Sevierville, TN.

I paid attention to what they are using, it's simple. A projector, a camera, a laser zapper pistol, and a tablet interface.

Fast forward to now.

I got me one a them SIRT pistols, pretty neat.

I've been researching; they make systems for home like at Buds, and the FATS deal.

Some of this stuff is free, some highly expensive.

Check out this one I found:

http://shootoffapp.com/

(I have no tie to them, I make nothing from this, just paying it forward).

This has a ton of neat features:

You can do like the basic software versions, you tape a target up somewhere, you get in the software, point the webcam at the target, and then blast. The thing registers your hits.

You can do more advanced stuff, like put up multiple targets and define zones on the targets. You shoot outside the zones, no hits. The software can then call zone 1, zone 3, whatever. You put the dot on the right target.

Apparently, you can do advanced stuff, like multiple cameras. Build your own virtual shoot house! Or, put up a projector, and the system will somehow display judgmental or moving targets. I think.

You don't need a dedicated toy pistol (and, I found another place online where they detail hacking up metal airsoft units to fire a laser). You can get one of those laser cartridges, they say.

The best part? Free!!

I am downloading it now, and hope to try it this weekend. I'll report back, but I'm posting now so maybe some of you can try it with me.

Obviously, this is a piece of a reasonable training pie, and you can reinforce bad habits or develop new bad habits with too much of this type of training.

But, I am going to get bored dryfiring a laser dot somewhere, and this thing will keep me honest (no, that shot looked in...)

Just wanted to share.

Edited to add - I forgot. I put this here instead of handguns, because you can get an AR15 bolt from SIRT, it autoresets so you can focus on trigger an not yanking the wishbone every shot. Think I'm gonna get one of those next.

I use the Lasrapp program, which is commercial software.  It's easy to use.  I haven't tried the shootoff one yet, but I heard it's not as easy to use and slow to run.

I use the programs to teach classes and for my own training.  My students love using it.  I use it to practice my one handed shooting from either side, barricade positions around a door frame, sitting & prone, timed from a holster, transitioning between targets, and shooting on the move.

They offer you any discounts on the bundles?

Can you add your own targets to that one easily?

Thanks!

There's a 10% discount code I'll send you.

You just use any paper or cardboard targets.  Or any object.  These programs are very finicky with lighting, so you use it indoors with static lighting, and no glare on your targets.
