Can some one explain the difference to me. Is it the speed of the bullet?

Im trying to figure out what my rounds are for a match app. Im assuming factory 9mm would be minor.

weight of bullet x velocity / 1000 I.E: 125 9mm X 1000 FPS = 125000/1000 = 125 PF.  Major is 165PF minor is 125PF.  Most factory 9mm will make minor....MOST.

all 9mm outside of open will be scored minor even if it makes +165 power factor.

Anything below 125 your shooting for fun.

That is a very important fact. There is also production division where everything is scored minor regardless of whether it makes major power factor or not.

All 9mm or just 9x19?  I am looking at 9x23 Win is the reason I ask.

In any division *other* than Open or Revo, the bullet diameter must be .400 or greater to be scored major.

9mm as in bore size. 9x 23 would be minor and a bad choice for major only due to brass cost,

38 super and 9x19 can be loaded to major pf for open.

revo, forgot about that class.

Would factory 40 S&W ammo make Major?

Yes.

Most factory 180gr is usually 175~180 PF. Factory 155gr and 165gr should make it as well; IIRC, some of those loads are even hotter.

ETA - But before going to a big match, you should still check with a chrono, doubly so if you run a gun with a shorter barrel than most, since you will be losing velocity compared to longer barrels.

Ranger 155 out of my 229 is over 170.

Definitely check them before a match. I had a couple close ones

I know out of a STI Edge red box fed 180 HP ammo makes 180 PF.
