I have some birthday time coming up which I'm going to dedicate to a handgun course this summer.  I'm looking at Tactical Response Fighting Pistol or CSAT Tactical Pistol course.  Both are around the same price and are roughly the same distance from my house.  Anybody have any thoughts on why one may be better than the other.  I'm currently leaning towards the CSAT course.

Thanks,

I have no experience with Tac Response but I did take CSAT Tactical Rifle instructor a few years ago. I would recommend CSAT over Tac Response from what I have heard and read about Tac Response.

See the ARR on CSAT tactical Pistol Instructor here

Both are good courses.  The shooting mechanics taught are very similar between the two.  You'll do more shooting from cover & some movement to precision/hostage shots at CSAT that Tactical Response won't cover & you'll do some malfunction clearing, supine & shooting on the move at Tactical Response that you won't get at CSAT.  The lecture portion of Fighting Pistol day 2 is also very good.

One isn't better than the other, they'll actually compliment each other pretty well.  If you haven't had any education on the legal & mindset aspects of defending yourself with a gun you'd probably be better off taking Fighting Pistol first because there really isn't much of that covered in the CSAT class.  If you can take a CSAT class that's at the end of the Tac Pistol Instructor class your instructor/student ratio will be very good but you may or may not get a lot of help from your guy.  It's luck of the draw.

I have taken several courses from Tactical Response.  I would recommend them to everyone!  The overall coast is less, the instructions is top notch.  All the instructors are BT DT guys.
Their Fighting pistol class is a two day course.  In those two days you will cover more than a week else where.  The biggest thing about Tactical Response is that every moment you are there you need to keep an open mind.  I can not stress how much you will learn if you follow that little bit of info.

Good luck with what ever you choose.

Thanks for the advice.  I talked to some of our team members who took Paul Howe's course at the LTPOA conference and they were all very impressed with his teaching and delivery.  This will be the first handgun course I've taken outside of departmental classes so I'm really looking forward to it.  I'll post an aar after I complete the class.

Thanks again.
