That's great. Also, welcome to the site!  I see this conversation is your first post.

Where in Florida are you? I'm in the Jacksonville area.

we'll, I've been out of BJJ for about 5 years due to school, life and another shoulder surgery. School is done, kids are older, everything is back to normal and my favorite near-by gym just reopened. I'm going to start back at 1 day a week, will keep you updated :)

Thank you! Yep, these are my first few posts. I’m in Orlando right now for college but I’ll be graduating soon. Where do you train in Jax?

Congrats on the Purple!

I've been blue for about 1.25yrs now and I'm changing schools next week. It will allow me to progress quicker and have more training partners to help round out my weaker areas.

I'll also be starting Judo, as my new academy offers that as well.

@Eagles9876

I train under 2 X World Champ 5X Brazilian national champ Aparecido "Bill" Faria  in Mandarin. It's a smaller school. Mostly hobbyists and law enforcement guys. I love it there. Great culture and Professor Bill's style is well suited to my game.

Thanks @CJ47 , I'm really happy about the promotion.  I earned it pretty quickly. Just shy of 3 years training (but I have prior grappling experience via wrestling).

Having the right training partners is everything. I hope you get what you need from the new place.

Anyone else noticing an uptick in schools offering open mats to non-members recently?

Perhaps it was mostly due to COVID nonsense, back in 2021/22 I contacted a bunch of local schools and only a couple had open mats for non-members. Now, almost all of them do.

My New Year's resolution is to hit up a different school's open mat at least once a month.

@RayFromJersey there is a TON of value in cross training.

While I was in NYC this summer I trained at a different gym and it really elevated my game because of all the different looks I was getting. It was great training at a predominantly guard passing school since my instructor is a world class guard player.  I have, as a result developed a guard-playing game.  Training in the other school really leveled up my guard passing and tested my guard. Especially my lasso and open guard.

There are a bunch of good schools nearby me and I have a similar goal of doing more cross training.   I really like the fellowship aspect too. Meeting other practitioners is always great.

Well I’m registered for the Arnold again this year. Maybe this time I’ll not get injured lol

My goal is 4 comps this year, injury and schedule permitting. Win or lose, I need to compete more.

I also cross train. Mostly at 10th Planet, because I have had awesome luck with the people there, but crosstraining is the best.

Bump this thread.

I take my Yellow Belt test for Judo in July. My standup is starting to improve some. Goes a long way to getting the action where I need it to be.

@CJ47 how is your year going?

I've been doing a lot of cross training.

In the past couple of months, I've trained with BJJ Cop, Nicholas Meregali, and Chewjitsu.  Been doing training with other gyms around town to promote Tap Cancer Out as well. I really enjoy cross training.

I was hoping to compete last month but injuries kept me from doing so. I'm hoping to go into my fort purple belt bracket at the end of the year.

That's awesome dude!! Who was your favorite to train with? A few buddies of mine are contemplating going down to a Chewjitsu camp since it's only in KY.

My year has been hectic! I haven't competed, I haven't gotten to cross train either. Mostly due to life with a newborn.

I'll be testing for my Judo yellow belt next week I believe. That's my main focus right now. I'm finding my standup improving some due to it, but those pesky wrestlers are my nightmare lol

I am VERY jealous! I have an NVG event I'm going to the 17th, it's been booked since March, so I'm only going to be able to stream ADCC on Sunday. I'll spend all day catching up on CJI and day 1 of ADCC as well.

UFC 305 is also Saturday 17th...I'm missing a lot!!!

Chewy had the best teaching style in my opinion and the half guard passing stuff he taught us was phenomenal. I use it all the time.  Cool factor training with Meregali was super high though.

I'm looking forward to next week. If you're in Instagram I'll be posting pics, videos and streams. DM me and I'll give you my @

Very cool. I volunteered at the TCO Atlanta Open the year before last. It was a great event. Atlanta always brings the heat.

You guys should come down to Jacksonville next year. I'd be happy to host you at our acadamy for some mat time, and if time permits maybe a quick range trip.

I have a 2 piece Dollamur mat. They're not cheap, but well worth it in my opinion.  It's the same surface as you'll find at competitions.

LINK TO DOLLAMUR MAT

This is the one I have and I have no regrets about making the investment.

@BrowardMason

Thanks. How does the carpet surface compare to the smooth for ease of sliding? I had looked at this smooth version previously.

I wish there was more money in this sport. Although I'm not competing currently, I'd love to compete and train in the alley.

I'm also wishing there were local level quintet comps. Someday I'll organize one of those lol

I haven’t watched all of day 1 yet, but I was disappointed in Rockhold’s performance.

It looked like he just showed up for the $10,001 to be there.

Maybe he was just lending his name to the competition, because it sure didn’t look like he was trying to win his match.

I want to both, CJI and ADCC last weekend. I had VVIP to CJI as a guest of Tap Cancer Out and I had VIP seating at ADCC.

ADCC wasn't even a shadow of what CJI was. I'm recording a podcast with BJJ Wiki about it all on Monday.

Feel free to AMA in the meantime - it was an awesome experience.

That's awesome!!

I've only been doing Jits for about 16 months, but I really enjoy it.  I got a late start at it (I'm 52 now).  I have zero desire to compete, but I enjoy watching the comps.

I haven't watched a lot of competitions, but I really like the angled walls of the CJI - it keeps it moving instead of going out of bounds.  I'm hoping Craig Jones  does it again next year.

We’ve got 2 guys on their mid 60’s I train with. Both are athletes and big.
I like seeing older dudes out there.
Seeing one of sister gyms grey headed purple belts in a competition sealed the deal for me. I signed up shortly after.
I’m a three 3 stripe purple now @ 56, started at 48 y/o.
I train under Kurt Holobough with Gracie United South Team Jucao. .
