I love the sound of lead hitting steel. When I am shooting recreationally, and just having fun, it is my go to target. The cost of a quality target is kind of a bummer, but I definitely think it is worth it. I find when teaching a new shooter, it is a valuable thing to have because they get instant feedback via the *ding* and know if they are doing all of the fundamentals correctly.
What do my fellow Arfcom members think when it comes to shooting steel?
What is your favorite kind of steel target? (Static steel, popper, swinger, ect..)

If you want to hear some steel ringing, check out this short clip of me enjoying a sunny afternoon here in wonderful KS. (P.S. It's not as flat as you all think )

Love it, I have picked up a few pieces from shootsteel.com. I have found though that you can't always hear the ring, so its nice to have someone calling your hits.

Right now I have 3 8" rounds that I use for pistol, and 1 9"x12" square that is mostly for rifles. All of the steel is 3/8" and 556 will put just the smallest little dimple on the plate. I use one side for rifle work, and flip to the other side for pistol.

Swinging steel sucks once you start speeding things up (unless you have a really heavy piece), so I stick to static steel, I have thought about getting some knock down plates, but I think bowling pins would be cheaper. I will get a dueling tree, and a few pepper poppers.

I have some 1/4 sized IPSC targets that I got from Big Dog Steel. These are on a 4x4 post mount which I really like for quick set up and the ability to vary heighth. These have been shot by several calibers of handgun with no issues. We have used them in at least two gunfighter courses where they have been subjected to 5.56mm fire (TONS). With the exception of the bolt heads getting blasted off twice, they are doing fine. There are some chips knocked out on the edges but for the price and the product, I am happy with them. I got the unpainted economy models. The target is set up with a slant to "vent" the splash down and away from the shooter.
