Hey guys, I've been a little board this winter and I was thinking of making my own Targets.
I already made up wooded holders and posts for paper targets. But I was thinking about making a few steel targets. Either something on a post that could spin around. Or just a center of mass type that would stand up and then fall back when hit. Has anyone made there own, had luck, what kind of steel? Anything would help. I didn't want to get really thick stuff or thin, Didn't know what is the right size. (all the targets are going to be ruffly life size. figure just find steel and cut out with plasma cutter.) Thanks, Matt |

You didn't say what caliber or distance you will be shooting.
If you just want to make some fun plinking targets for 22s, it might be possible to use any old steel. If you are wanting to shoot centerfire rifle or pistol, soft steel will quickly get dings, divits and holes in it and become dangerous. Look at this pdf and take it to heart. Gringop |

+1 on the action target guide. It is generally accepted that AR500-AR550 steel is the appropriate steel hardness for shooting with a 5.56 rifle. I have not heard anyone recomend a thickness. Welds reduce the strengh of the steel, so avoid them when possible. Design your targets so they are reversable. When they become pitted flip them around and use the backside. I'd like to see what others have made. |
