when i was shooting the rapid stages this weekend i had multiple failures to extract. i would shoot and the fired round would stay snugly in the chamber. dropping the bolt on the fired case and pulling the charging handle resulted in trouble free extraction.

i am shooting 23.4 grains rl-15 behind 75 grain hornady bthp's in federal cases.

i cleaned the rifle prior to the match and made sure the extractor was in good shape. no problems in the slow fire portions of the match leading up to the rapid stage, so that was 22 rounds fired prior to the problem.

i am wondering what the possible causes and fixes may be. i think the problem is the cases themselves - federal - because i can't find anything else. is it possible the federal cases are a problem? how do i know if the extractor is worn so far that it is a problem? the rifle has about 1000 rounds fired since new. barrel is a krieger.

thanks for any help.

Sir, I've had extraction problems with my match AR a few times.  I don't stress about it, I just replace the extractor.  I keep a spare in my shooting stool.  Make sure you use the heavy extractor spring with the black plastic insert and that the spring is properly seated into the recess in the extractor before you install the new extractor in the bolt.  If you compare a new extractor side by side with a worn one you can usually see that the worn one has slightly bowed so the lip that engages the case rim isn't fully onto the case rim.  Generally speaking damage to the case rim can cause extraction problems but unless the damage is severe that's not a likely problem.  HTH, 7zero1.

23.4 is pretty l light.  I got sooty brass with that. 24 has been great

Could the light charge be a contributor?

<––- used Hornady and now LC brass.

Make sure the chamber and especially the neck area are clean.
You might also check to see if your sizing isn't the problem.
Can you chamber and extract a live round?
I've had a couple of fail to extract from using ammo sized for a different rifle.
IAAF, replace the extraceor and spring.

i compared a new extractor to the one that was in the gun and other than the used one having some shiny spots i can't see a difference in physical dimensions. i'll look again when i get a chance to thoroughly clean and lube the gun. club match on thursday...

i don't think the lighter than norm powder charge was a contributor. it is only a half grain lighter than what most folks run, and the cases were extracting easily when i pulled the charging handle. the bolt locked back as it should on an empty mag, and the bolt locked fully into battery on a loaded round.

likewise, i don't think sizing was a problem. i full length small base size all my match loads, and the bolt locked into battery without problem.

But what about extraction of the live round?

Time to troubleshoot (no pun intended) to pinpoint cause and effect variables.

–– Load up 23.4 grains RL-15 with your 75 grain Hornady BTHP.
–– Load up 24.0 grains RL-15 with your 75 grain Hornady BTHP.
–– Get some store-bought factory ammo. Anything will do.

Go to a range and load 3 dependable mags with 10 rounds of each of the above.

If they ALL have extraction issues, you need to replace the extractor.

If only your reloads have extraction issues, but not the factory ammo, then there is an issue with your brass or your sizing die. Check your loaded rounds with a case gage.

If only the 23.4 grain reloads have extraction issues, you probably just need to adjust your load up a bit.
