I am currently attending college and living on campus. I run a lot usually during the day, but during the winter months it gets dark early, so some times I have to run at night/during the dark. Sometimes I get off campus to a friends house or party, but end up walking back which can be anywhere from 1/2-2 miles. Usually I can get a car ride but every once in a while the car breaks down or they slide in the ditch ect. ect.

Now my question is what light would suit my needs better

the surefire e2d defender or the LX2 lumamax

I am leaning towards the LX2 because is has a 15 lumin low setting good for general purpose usage then the 200 lumin get away from me/I need it to be daytime plus I can set the bezel so that it is off, slight press = 15 lumins, full press = 200

the E2D does have the advantage of being about 35 dollars cheaper however I don't like how the 200 lumins comes on first then the 5 lumins I understand why they did it I just don't like it, but if somebody can make a good argument as to why it is a better light I'm willing to hear it.

As with carry guns, get the flashlight that you will always carry. IMHO, a good SD flashlight, like a Surefire light, is one of the best basic SD tools you can carry. I carry the SF backup light becuase it's compact, fits in my pocket, and always works when I need it. If you carry it all the time you will feel naked when you don't have it, kind of like when you forget your wallet at home. You will be surprised how often you end up using it even during the day.

I'll second the Surefire E2 LED Defender.  I carry one all the time, along with my pocketknife.

It's rugged, bright, and can be used as a weapon in a pinch.
