It's really interesting to see the evolution of setups through this thread.
Any newbies looking to start, the 'stop holes, make holes, plug holes' mantra is really good and helps keep it simple. This setup places more emphasis on the belt. The other really common setup philosophy is carrier is primary gear, belt is secondary, and pack is sustainment. This setup is used for peeps who spend more time in there carrier or may rely on their carrier as way to actually do their task. (More common in military). Lastly if you choose to go with the more simple setup and use more gear on your belt MAKE sure you train like that. With plates if possible. Getting gear off your belt with a carrier on can be a pain in the ass and you may realize that your 'perfect setup' sucks when used in conjunction with all your gear. |

I’d thought about ditching the Spiritus myself since like you said, it adds unnecessary bulk to my rig... somehow you end up cramming shit in there and the front pouch ALWAYS ends up getting thick... New to plates here.
Maybe stupid question to most but do you use 1 plate front, 1 rear? |

Velocity Systems does something similar to this with their proprietary ULV cut armor and carrier. Personally, I like having both plates be swimmer cut for mounting a rifle front and not blocking my range of motion as much in the rear. When doing any kind of movement with the upper body, larger plates in the rear can limit the range of motion of shoulder blades and the trapezius & rear deltoid muscles. This may be a non-issue depending on how you stand with regard to SAPI plate sizes, but I think it is worth noting the possible interference that may occur. No one plate geometry is perfect for everyone. |
