It just takes folks getting to know ya zrxc, just takes time. You've got a good attitude towards the list. When you're compiling other's knowledge it would be wrong to claim it as anything other than group property. unless you're bill gates |
Is that a question about what "tag" means, or are you actually tagging the thread? |
zrxcyy,
MP is not "Magnetic Particle" it is Magnetic particle, Proof load. |
Do you mean in the context of barrel markings specifically? I have seen MP used to mean only "Magnetic Particle" in the non-destructive test and evaluation field in general. For example here and here (the latter reference from the Los Alamos National Labs). For what it is worth, Bigger Hammer also lists MP as meaning just "Magnetic Particle" in the context of barrel markings: www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/barrelsbolts/ Of course, Colt apparently does magnetic particle testing hand-in-hand with proof load testing, so I wouldn't be shocked if the acronym MP includes both as you indicated. |
Thanks Tweak. The Army manual TM 9-1005-249-23&P does list MP as meaning "Magnetic Particle" in its section on checking erosion: However, I take your blueprint to be more authoritative. By the way, the quality of that blueprint scan is too bad for me to see clearly, but is the mark deliberately formed so that the M and the P merge together to form a single symbol as in the photos from biggerhammer.net? Or are those just examples of sloppy stamping? <edited to link to biggerhammer.net images rather than posting them directly> |

O.K. I might have missed it but I want know where the expression, "All your ______ are belong to us" came from. BTW, I'm slowly starting to lose my newbie status as I recognized most of these questions but this one has me stumped.
Off topic, but "All your base are belong to us" first appeared in the opening sequence to the (badly translated) English version of the 1989 Japanese video game Zero Wing. For whatever reason, people found the phrase to be funny and it took on a life of its own. For other amusing examples of awkard Japanese to English translations, Google for "Engrish".
ETA - You can see screen caps of the opening sequence here. |

Several people have tagged this thread. I am assuming that those of you who have tagged it did so in order to be alerted when new contributions are added to the thread. For a while now I have just been quietly adding entries to the front page with edits rather than announcing them with new posts. Would those of you who have tagged the thread like me to add a post whenever I edit the front page?
Today I added: BAC - Bindon Aiming Concept (the idea behind Trijicon optics like the ACOG that are designed to combine the rapid acquisition of unmagnified sights with the accuracy of traditional magnified scopes. Requires the use of both eyes in the manner of OEGs. website) BG - Battlegrip (enhanced handgrip made by TangoDown - website) KMC - Knights Manufacturing Company (manufacturer of rail adapter systems, sights and accessories - website) RKI - Reasonably Knowledgeable Individual ZM - Z-Man or Zitta-Man {Weapons} (manufacturer of the LR-300 op-rod gas system upper/rifle and LR-300/AR-15 accessories - website) I added KAC a long time ago, so I don't feel so bad about being late to add KMC. But I don't know how I managed to neglect BAC for so long... |
Updated with:
ATN - American Technologies Network (manufacturer and distributer of weapon optics and night vision equipment - website) COC - Code Of Conduct (the rules governing your use of this site) GP - Group Purchase HSLD - High Speed, Low Drag (of or relating to special forces and other highly skilled operators) JMO - Just My Opinion JP - John Paul {Enterprises/Rifles} (manufacturer of rifle parts and accessories, particularly known for their trigger parts - website) PIA - Pain In the Ass PITA - Pain In The Ass RA - Robinson Armament (manufacturer of the M96 series of piston operated .223 rifles - website) TA - Tactical Armadillo (promotional bottle-opener/mascot of LaRue Tactical - website) TCH - Tactical Carry Handle (a specialized carry handle made by RRA and designed to mount Aimpoint red dot sights via Aimpoint's low ring - website)
Do you mean Group Purchase as listed above?
A troll is someone who posts with the sole goal of disrupting the site. What constitutes a disruptive post, of course, varies according to the reader, but the COC gives you good guidlines for how you should behave to avoid being a troll. |

I believe abbreviations are a sign of laziness, and are often associated with an on going web lingo "fad" and most are over used by people trying to "fit in" or "be cool"........and for the people who think THAT TYPING IN CAP LOCKS IS CONSIDERED "YELLING" get a life. its only larger typed letters and was never meant to be considered yelling by anyone but morons who spend way to much time on the net. Only my humble opinion or "OMHO" hehehehe

BIY? Looked to me like it was possibly a slam on a dopey poster??? dg
I know BIY to mean "Build It Yourself". Does that fit the context you saw it in, or might it have had a different meaning? |
Added to front page:
ASA - American Spirit Arms (manufacturer of AR-15 rifles, rifle kits, parts and accessories - website) BIY - Build It Yourself EA - Essential Arms (manufacturer of AR-15 lowers, stocks and parts - website) LPK - Lower Parts Kit NSN - National Stock Number (a unique number assigned to each item in the Federal Supply Cataloging System, including parts and accessories for military weapons such as the M16) SGN - Shotgun News (a venerable gun sales publication made up entirely of display and classified advertising, first published in 1946 - website) SUM - Stainless Ultra Match (Olympic Arms' name for their stainless steel barrel made with broach-cut rifling for accuracy - website) AROKIE, there is certainly a lot of jargon associated with the AR-15 that can make it hard to decipher what is being said. Decoding that jargon is the purpose of this list. I neither promote nor condemn usage of the acronyms in this list. I just try to help people understand them. |
Thanks, makes sense now. Build It Yourself was absolutely what he meant. dg
Buried It's tacked to the top. But thanks for the BTT anyway. Sometimes it seems like people never look at the tacked threads... |
Hey look at that... it is. Whaddya know. I didn't realize it wasn't in the GD. It's the thought that counts... or something.... |

Sort of. "Pwned" is an example of "l33t 5p33k" (leet speak), a malformed dialect of English practiced by computer game fans and others of that bent. "Pwned" is thought to have originated as a typo for "owned", but now people deliberately type "pwned" because they believe it (and "leet speak" in general) to be cool. I won't add pwned to this list of acronyms because it isn't an acronym and has nothing to do with AR-15s. Google for "l33t 5p33k" if you want to know more.
Yes it is. And I thank you for the thought. |

Look it up on Urban Dictionary. I use that website all the time because of some of the off the wall shit people come up with on this site. |

AFU = All Fouled Up. Substitute another word for fouled, you know
DOMA = Drunk On My Ass. Or is it Off instead of On? Anyway... |

Sorry for the delay. I was busy with holiday travel and such.
"Bump" is neither an acronym nor an abbreviation. It is shorthand for "Bump to the top." Whenever someone posts a new message in a topic, that topic is moved to the top of the index page for its forum. This keeps the topics with the most recent activity first on the index page and, thus, makes it easy for readers to locate and read new messages. If someone believes a topic has worthwhile information that should be brought to readers' attention but doesn't have any new content to add to that topic, that person will sometimes bump the topic to the top of the index page by posting an empty message or one that simply says "bump" so that readers will know why the otherwise empty post was made. I hope this helps, and let me offer you a belated welcome to ar15.com. Enjoy your stay. |

NU-B question...what is trolling? From what I gather, trolls aren't well liked. Don't want to unknowingly do something to become one.
DVR9 |
Different people have different ideas as to what constitutes trolling, so I can't give you fixed list of behavior that constitutes trolling. However, in general a troll is someone who deliberately tries to disrupt the site by posting inflamatory comments, insults, attacks, spam, etc. If you read and follow the Coc (code of conduct), treat other members with respect and post civily, then you shouldn't have any problems.
Thanks pathfinder. In fact SCAR was already in the list on the front page, along with a link to more information. Unfortunately, that link seems to be broken now, so I will change the entry to link to your post instead. Thanks for the contribution. |

Doesn't get used here much but it's in pathfinder74's post so before someone asks,
CLIN: Contract Line Item Number |
Added the following entries:
CQ/T (also CQT) - Close Quarters / Tactical (a 1-3x optic made by Leupold and designed for close quarters battle with some mid-range capability as well) MR/T (also MRT) - Mid Range / Tactical (a line of optics made by Leupold and designed for mid-range capability) PDW - Personal Defense Weapon (a generally compact weapon designed primarily for defensive rather than offensive operations, for example the FN P90) PSD - Personal Security Detail/Detachment (a group of security specialists who travel with and provide personal protection for a high-ranking or valuable person) TPRRRS - Tap, Pull, Rack, Roll, Release, Shoot (an alternative to the traditional SPORTS IAD, described here) Also added a link to another general purpose acronym reference site: www.acronymfinder.com/ |

What is a BOB? seems to pop up a lot in the survival forum...
Probably a Bug Out Bag - a bag filled with the necessities you will need to survive in the event you are forced to flee your home on a moment's notice. Does that sound like it fits the context you have seen "BOB" in? |
Yup. Thanks ETA: I never knew that was what my backpack/butt pack were.... |
You're welcome. I'll add it to the front page. |
