The AK bullet button is pretty awkward to manipulate compared to an AR, so I feel that it's worth it. It's weird at first, but after a few minutes you hardly notice.
I use a BB on my ARs though.
I have some thirtys, but all others I buy as rebuilds and convert to 10s.

How do they become 'legally owned'?  Does CA have a pre-ban policy like NY where you can buy any mag made before 1994 (which includes most Combloc mags)?  Or did you personally have to own the mags before the ban was imposed?

Well, in CA it is not illegal to posses 30 round magazines. It is illegal to manufacture or import new 30 round magazines (parts kits are OK to import).
If you owned the magazines legally before 2000, you can use them in a rifle that does not have a magazine lock.
So an LEO would have to prove that you either imported or manufactured a magazine illegally, within the last three years (three year statute of limitations).
It is not illegal to keep magazines that you have found. The mag law is basically meaningless, EXCEPT for the part about using a 30 round magazine in a maglocked rifle, as that is illegal whether the magazine itself is legal or not.

Interesting.  So when you say 'found', does that mean that 30-rounders are legal for sale WITHIN CA, or did you personally have to be a resident of CA and own a 30-rounder before 2000?  I ask all this b/c there's a chance I'll be moving from TX to CA, and I'm wondering what to do with all my 30-rounders.

They are not transferable between parties, no. But say you were out shooting and found a mag someone had dropped (people lose mags out here in BLM land all the time, believe me), it would be legal to keep and use.
You can disassemble them and bring them with you to convert to 10 rounders, leave them out of state, or use them illegally here, which I do not advise. That being said, the chances of you actually getting in trouble for it are pretty slim. I repeat, this would be illegal.

The laws there make no sense.  Can't you guys try to get things back in your favor over there?  It's just rediculous pointless crap.

Well don't worry, we all feel the same way. We're working on it.
But I'm moving out of state within a few years anyways.

Ok just swapped out my furniture on my Mak-90...and added a bakalite mag. The milky spot on the side of the reiver is odd when you look straight on you see the blueing and it looks fine. Its the stamp from the importer.

Got the brake reamed out, took it to the range, and found that it cycles much smoother with the stock gas tube.  The look is kinda growing on me.

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean by reaming the brake out??   I own 7 AKs and don't think I ever reamed a brake !?  You mean muzzle-brake?  If that's what you mean, why would you have to ream it out??

Can't wait to find out....

The muzzle brake was a 5.45 brake that needed to be reamed out to ~10mm so that I could safely shoot 7.62 through it.

Looks great, but I can't help thinking it would look better with an AMD-65 forend on it

Gotcha !  Looks good, but why no wood or bakelite covering the gas tube?  Gets VERY hot and abit dangerous if you inadvertantly touch that area after not too many rounds...

The foregrip keeps my hand away from the gas tube.  I wear gloves when I shoot so it shouldn't be a problem.  If it is, I still have the old gas tube with a wood upper on it.

Very sharp! I like that new flash hider. Looks like you refinished the wood furniture and cleaned up the metal as well? What did you use on the metal parts? I'm planning on doing the same with my wasr 10/63 when I have the time.

Curious about the light. Is it remotely activated down by the controls, via a switch, or do you have to turn it on & off from where it's at? Also curious about the sling setup. Do you have a pic of the other side?

Thanks ... you did a great job with that WASR. Enjoy

Thanks!  It's the Jtac muzzle brake and actually makes it louder and flash more than normal, but it drops the recoil so much it's totally worth it.  I haven't refinished anything on it, I just try to keep it cleaned up.  WD-40 makes the metal look a little better.  The light is a Maglight XL200 and it's just a push-button light held on by a UTG light mount.  Here is a close-up of the rail:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Mycka7Yto8s/Tx7KCpiow7I/AAAAAAAAASw/bQBqSYdQSLc/s800/rail.jpg

As for the sling mount I don't have a picture of it handy so I'll just direct you to these guys: http://www.echo93.com/  Gearscout did an article about their products and I had to have one!  Really high quality part and it dropped right in.

Yeah, I can see in the close-up that the wood is unfinished. The metal looks good though, I never thought about just using WD-40. I plan on completely tearing mine down to do the refinishing. Anyway, thanks for the info ... the light & mount is really nice, and that sling setup is very cool! Think I might get one myself

Hi all, thought I'd share my AK. Long time lurker, first time poster.

It's an IO STG clone. Not a great gun by any means, but fun nonetheless.

Started out as this (roughly, added the grip)
http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b445/caniaitalia/DSC_0011.jpg

Currently looks like this:
http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b445/caniaitalia/DSC_0032.jpg
http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b445/caniaitalia/DSC_0026.jpg

Mind you, the gun shoots pretty terribly, but it's fun to blast off some rounds every once and awhile. The camo is just some cheap duct tape I picked up at WalMart for $3!

Here is a converted AES-10.  Original lightweight barrel length was 23"in.  It came modified to accept double stack mags.  I did this conversion because It was like shooting with a garden hose after it warmed up abit.   I cut the barrel down to a legal length 16.5"in and threaded it for an M-14 style muzzlebrake.  The rifle is now accurate to what I'd expect for a Romak.  Magpul collapsible stock, Romy (IOR 4X24) scope and green laser.  Fun little project.  I can't say how practical all this stuff would be in a gunfight (I'm no youngster anymore so "operator reliability" is always part of that equation) but looks cool.  In an emergency I'd probably just grab my HBAR AR-15 anyway.....

Another conversion, this time a Bulgarian Arsenal SLR101S.  This gun has a milled receiver and I modified it to accept an "ACE" internal folding stock mechanisms.  The tubular stock has a piece of closed cell neoprene tubing on the top rail for a comfortable cheek weld.  I actually like this gun alot.  It is very accurate and probably my favorite AK.  I did this mod before Tapco made tactical AK forearms, so a picatinny rail was secured with short bolts underneath the Arsenal provided K-VAR lower forearm.  The folding grip is comfortable, because for one thing it doesn't interfere with mag swap-outs like a fixed grip would.  The push button switch tactical light is secured with a two piece barrel mount a practical distance from my left forefinger.
