Thank you for the kind words.
I used 0000 steel wool to take it down as close to bare metal as possible. Sprayed and baked. Ironwood stocks are fantastic. I just used some mahagony stain and them about 10 coats of tung oil. Buffed it with 0000 steel wool. |

I just picked one up and kinda like you said....it looks rough. I've been thinkin of redoing it. How difficult was it to refinish the reciever? How did you apply the Duracoat, did you heat cure it or just let it dry. I really want to do that to mine. I tried to PM you but it said your box is full. |

Might clear coat the wood but other than that I'm gonna leave her alone. i think they have a lot of character the way they come.

Hi all!
First post and first AK. :) Just picked this up about 4 days ago and decided on redoing the finish on it. It's not exactly what I was shooting for but I think it turned out ok. All in all I think I like the rough look of the factory though. This was a qucick finish job though so maybe in fall I'll make it a project again and sink some time in to it. lol href=http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2994/img2099.jpg" /> |
|
|
how about some details on that finish! it looks awesome!

The stain I used is Mini Wax decorative color tint stain and tbh I forgot the exact color(i dont have the sample sheet here, prob 30 different tints). Then just a medium poly in 3 coats with light 300 grit sanding inbetween. It's a little to shiney for my taste and it's certainly not the cleanest job. I look through this thread with envy on some of your guys but I've only stained a few times in my life lol. |
