I found 7.5 feet just a tad too short for me... I'd recommend getting 8.5' and if you don't like it just cut it off...

Thanks! Just in time for this tip. My stuff from Strapworks came in just this afternoon. Had I not seen this I probably would have wasted 7.5 ft of webing. Luckily I bought 20ft extra of the 1.5 so I could just lop off the 7in lengths no prob. First one took a little while to figure the orientation of the buckles but after the first one was done I finished the second one before my cigarrette was out.

Also thanks again Strapworks! I ordered my stuff Sunday evening and the USPS guy showed up at noon on Tuesday!

Thanks a bunch for the directions.  I put together my kit
from Strapworks last week.  The only problem I've noticed
is that I'd have been better off using a 7" piece of webbing
instead of the 1.5 inche wide 5" long piece.  5" was just
too tight.  It looked nice but not enough for a good bite
in the buckle's.  I had it pop loose while carrying on a
 hike (after about an hour).

I have a friend in the Border Patrol who works in the San Diego sector. He was recently issued an M4, so I sent him to this thread. After considerable difficulty finding the parts, he built the sling and couldn't be happier with it.

His words:

height=8
I took my rifle out tonight, and ended up going on a monster push for several hours.  From open terrain to really steep, to super thick brush, to really rocky ground, to boulder hopping and crawling around in rocks.  Of course it would have been more comfortable without the rifle at all, but the tactical sling was awesome.  Million times better than just a single strap.

And here is the long list of places he had to go to find all the parts:

height=8
Lowe's
Ace Hardware
G.I. Joe's (another surplus place)
Pat's Tools (a mom-and-pop hardware store)
Home Depot
Michael's (a craft store, recommended by some lady in Home Depot)
PetsMart (recommended by the craft store lady, because of their saddlery section)
Yardage Town (a fabric store, who finally pointed me to Stars and Stripes)
Stars and Stripes (army surplus store)

Since he has used it in the field and really likes it, I will definitely be making my own. He said he paid about $14 altogether (high SoCal inflation, I'm sure :-) ). Not bad considering the Galco tactical sling is $50!

This is awesome! How would I adjust this to make it work on an underfolder AK?

Obviously something will have to be shorter, but which piece, and by how much do you think? I could always just make it big and go from there I guess, but some input would be appreciated :)

Guys,

My "step 6 assembly" came apart somehow. The "tail" end coming out of the female clip came out. Anybody else have that? Should I maybe superglue those tails down?

advice?

Thought I would show off my little project.  It was taken from the orginal post here and I did some sewing and made the sling a little different for my work.

Anyone have simple plans to adapt this to an A2 stock?  I've seen some picks of the webbing wrapping around the end of the A2 stock and coming off the top of the stock, but I was hoping someone had built their own and could share their plans.

Thanks in advance.

Made mine today, as instructions show. Local Ace had it all. Haven't had much time to try it out yet, but it seems to work well and looks great. Thanks

If one wanted to use swivel attachments instead of wrapping the butt stock and barrel, what would the hook up be for that? Just wrap the short pieces around the swivels?

Alright, now it's personal.  We don't have an ACE in town, so I went to Menards, Lowes, True Value, and a fabrics store.  Found nothing but the 1" webbing and Velcro!  Dangitall!  My son and I were planning on this for a project today, as it's way too yucky for our annual day-before-Thanksgiving rabbit/pheasant hunt. Guess I'll have to find an ACE store.

But ... you should have seen the look on the lady's face at Joanne Fabrics when she asked what it was for and I said "A rifle sling"!  Looked like she was going to faint on the spot!

If you are looking to sew the straps together get a Quick Stich Sewing Awl from Harbor freight. www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91812 Only $4.99.  Here is the link for the how to use manual.

Does anyone haave a good source for 1 1/4" heavyweight Polypropylene webbing (preferrably black)?  I have the GG&G Single Point plate on my M4, and the 1 1/2" you see most places is most definitely not going through that plate.  Anybody?

Well, I just ordered everything I need for a sling from them and the total was a little over $11 including shipping. Of course, I ordered 7 yards of nylon, so that could be it too. (I have some extra bags lying around I can take parts off of for another sling.)

Checked at my local Ace and a half dozen other places including fabric stores, REI, and the Army/Navy store and nobody has anything but plain old black webbing.  I also looked for a cam lock buckle like the one on the Specter SOP and found them in 1" and 2" sizes, but no 1 1/2".  Anyone have any other sources for these types of materials?hinking.gif

Strapman,

Can you substitute a 1 1/2" cam lock for one of the slide locks in your kit?

I second that, I have this sling in my M4's, but want to adapt to A2 fixed. Maybe just add a mount point at the front of the stock?

There are lots of adapters out there that let you put a regular sling swivel stud somewhere on the front handguard or front sight post.  Make a second sling and use the 1" webbing to attach a 1" QD Sling swivel.  I want a camlock buckle up front to make the sling even more like the Specter SOP, but without the $40 pricetag.

Is there a reason no one attaches the sling to the swivel on the tail end of the m4 butt stock? I see some people attach the front to the little swivel in front of the handguards, but I don't ever see that style off attaching on the back of the rifle.

I just put together my strapworks kit and did that at first but found it much better to attach through the slot under the buffer tube and loop around the tube while shortening that piece to about 9". Play around with it though to see what fits you best.

I got my first sling completed, I now have to get front sight sling attachments and a sling attachment for my CAR stock so I can use it like its supposed to done.

As soon as I can figure out how to make one that will suit my Brother's needs in Afghanistan I'll sew it and send it over. I think its a 3 point sling but I've never seen one before, his attached to the retaining plate for the M4 spanner nut  for what its called.

Thank you! I didn't think anyone would actually reply!

Anyway, I got my stuff from Nexus and ordered my stuff from Strapworks but still have nothing. After hearing about their quick service, I'm dissapointed that I don't have my webbing yet. Of course, I they may be across the country from me and that may account for the delay. Either way, I'm excited to get all my stuff and do this little project. I actually went with "Olive Drab" to contrast with my black Stag rifle.
