Looks legit.  The fakes come in a plain cardbord box.  The real units have an indexing hump milled into the bottom to lock the unit in place.  You have to remove the mount to see it.

Got a pic of this?

Polarbare, The caps do move past the last position but they won't go all the way around. Really seems decent for the money.Battery life is decent. Dan

That's not exactly true - just talked with the Aimpoint guys as well (Tim?) and he said that a letter in front pretty much means its real, but that aimpoint does make sights without a letter in front of the serial number. He pointed out the "lens test" for the CompM4 (or other NV compatible sights) - the front lens should be red head on, but turn pale yellow then pale green as its angled away from you.

blackrifle dan mentioned that the fake that he got has the same number of settings and won't turn all the way around. The guy at aimpoint said that the newer fakes he has seen have a "stop" in place, but with a fair amount of force, they will go all the way around, which it won't with a real CompM4. Can you test that out for us blackrifle dan and see if that is the case?

How about this one? It has Aimpoint CompM 067434 Made in Sweden engraved on the battery compartment. It only has a red dot no green. 9 settings, the red appears in the 4th switch setting. The windage/elevation knows are black in color. Any help greatly appreciated. http://i835.photobucket.com/albums/zz271/turbinesurgun/12-27-09_1006.jpg                                             http://i835.photobucket.com/albums/zz271/turbinesurgun/12-27-09_1016.jpg                                          http://i835.photobucket.com/albums/zz271/turbinesurgun/12-27-09_1008.jpg

Just got off the phone with aimpoint. The older comp m's were engraved on the battery compartment so it is real and really old. Just wanted to let the thread know that some do not have the big AIMPOINT on the left side but are still legit. Thanks

Of course, sometimes you can tell by just reading the item description. If it says anything like "Mount Sturdy, Center Align, Can be on Real Fire Caliber", it's probably phoney-baloney.

I have requested more pics from the seller, so hopefully they will show better  signs of whether this is a real or fake.

So, to the experts out there, would the differences in turret and diode mounting for the genuine M2s translate over to the M3s?

Glad I ran into this thread today. It kept me from wasting $300 on a fake scope a guy had for sale. Thank you for the post. I already got bit a few years ago on an Eotech 512 that turned out to be a fake.

This thread has been an emotional roller coaster for me.  I was sh––ing tiffany cufflinks until I got to the last page and saw pics of the genuine CompM4s.  I got a really good deal about 1 year ago on ebay.  I researched it pretty thoroughly before I bought it.  Thanks to all who have provided this valuable intel.

Hiya...

I hate to do this, but I'd like a couple sets of eyes on it besides mine.

Is there any way for me to tell from these pictures that his optic is genuine?

Aimpoint ML3

I don't doubt the seller–– he has +20 AR15.com feedback.  I am just really paranoid after getting burned on a fake ML2 last year (not on AR15.com)

Thanks!

Ask for a photo of the inside of the battery cap.  If you see a spring it's fake, if you see a black rubber pad in the bottom it's legit.

The apparently real comp4 on page 9 looks like it has both a black pad and a copper/brass colored spring.  Based on this thread I would assume lack of black pad suggests a fake.  Any fakes with black pad yet?

I haven't read this whole thread, but this one has "Made in Sweden" under the serial number, which I've never seen before. Is this good to go or is it a fake?

Buy it from LaRue with a Real mount and you'll have no Worries.

Kid at my school (when I was attending School for Gun Smithing) brought in an AR and bragged about how cheap he got his Aimpoint for...

It was so cheesy looking and felt funny as hell... argued with me when I told him it was fake...

Said he Paid 200 bucks for it in 99% condition because it was a Demo Model they were selling off

You could tell it was horribly Fake.
Even after Another student brought in a REAL aimpoint of the exact same model (since my model was not the same as his) he was still in denial.

I think he just didn't wanna man up to the fact he got ripped off...

Beware of the U.S. sellers.. I won't mention them expressedly by name... selling these same knock offs for $79 - $100 on gunbroker.   THEY ARE THE SAME SHIT.  They just order them from m@rsh@llw00, etc, and repackage them in a nicer box, allen key, more batteries, etc.

Anyone else took apart an aimpoint clone?  All I want is pictures of the brightness adjustment circuits, which should be attached to the brightness adjustment knob.  The reason why is that I am researching at what circuitry I need to machine my own working red dot scope.  Thanks in advance

Thanks for this thread. I came across a guy selling an AR last night and he says he also has a Aimpoint CompM4 that he got as a trade to go with it. I've been waiting on pics and asked if it was real or fake due to the price being so low. Response was I just got a email back saying it's been sold to his friend and unless it falls through the friend's buying it. Probably fake but if it was real it'd have been the deal of the century...$150.00!

The Aimpoint AAFES kit (its a Comp M2 that has a QD mount and spacer) that is or was being sold by SWFA comes in a plain box.

I think they were a military over run or something.

To me the white Aimpoint lettering, the battery caps/strap and lack of lens coatings were what give it away as a fake.

If it's real, there's a good likelihood it's stolen from the .mil or .gov.
