Questions about slings

What's the correct way to mount my Vickers sling?

I assume a mag pouch on the rear, but which?

I use the rear sling swivel (pouch or not), and on the front I use a (not clone correct but it works for me) Magpul paraclip on the front swivel.  It gives a QD element to the sling and also allows the front of the rifle to move a little on the swivel so it will sit flat on my shoulder or back while being carried.

This thread was an inspiration

The A4 was my absolute favorite rifle to shoot in basic.

The wife unit just bought me a Aero M16A4 marked lower for Christmas, and I've had a KAC M5 RAS laying around for the better part of a year.

Back into the A4 game... Started parting out my last a4 until I had the complete lower, and barreled upper lol good job right? I found a zombie "Green" 2005 KAC m5 ras for 20 bucks at a local fleemarket not long ago..... Guy said it wasn't stripped so into a bucket of laquer thinner it went... Low and behold it had been sand blasted.... FML, and I swear flat black for some reason doesn't feel like flat black anymore so I went with Coyote Alumhyde I had left over. Stil had my old rail covers so I dropped them on as well.
Picked up a TA01 with cross hair from the EE.... Upper is a BCM, lower PSA with BCM PNT trigger, Stock is White Oak Armament A2 stock and specter sling. Still need a BUIS, not sure if I want to go with a correct Matech or KAC or just get something different due to it not being right anyways....

Last gun I will build or buy for a while, grad school starts in August.....

About your Specter Gear sling, the part that wraps around the rail is that part of the sling or an additional item ordered separately?

Fair deal but not a good deal. He has it priced exactly how I would.

FN barrel- $250
FN upper - $125
P&S RAS- $100
Matech- $50
FN BCG- $125

Offer him $550, if he says no i would offer $600. I think id max my offer out at 6 tho unless you want it bad enough to pay full (but fair) price.

Can I drill out the matech aperture to match the same size as the larger peep on the carry handle.  I have both but cant use the matech due to astigmatism making it hard to see. Would this cause it to be unusable ?

I don't see any reason it would become unuseable. I'd just try to remove as little material as possible until you can see through it

Just make sure you center the hole and it shouldn't make any difference.

If you can make certain you are drilling center, it will be fine. If you drill off center, you will have to adjust your windage or possibly elevation to make up for it.

I have astigmatism as well and I prefer the smaller apertures. Red dots are kind of a mess but if I look at the dot through a small aperture, it crispens the dot greatly. I prefer small aperture shooting plain irons though

Just remember to place the BUIS as close to the eye as possible.  The closer the larger the aperture will appear.

My apologies if this info is buried somewhere in all these pages, but does anyone know the rough timeline for when the Army procured FN vs. Colt M16A4s? I was issued a brand new one back in early 2005 that I think was an FN, but I wasn’t paying too close attention to those things back then. I have a vague memory of thinking that it was interesting that it wasn’t a Colt, but I could also be thinking of an M4 I saw around the same time or something.

I’d like to eventually build a clone of that rifle and would prefer a Colt, but I’d also be open to the idea of trying to build a more correct FN.

Couldn't say just when FN entered the mix. But, both Colt and FN offer A4 models. The FN Military Collector M16 has almost everything you need...at a steep price.

Personally, I'd look for the Colt, then source a RAS M5 and what else. Colt reintroduced the A4 after I built mine. I love BCM, but it's not "correct".

Yeah, I’m definitely leaning towards Colt - just wish they could have put “M16A4” on theirs (not a big deal, but would have been nice). My issue with the FN military collector rifle is that the roll mark is different (if I’m going for a clone, might as well get it as close as possible), and my rifle back then didn’t have a UID tag or an ambidextrous selector, so I’d kind of be paying extra for things I didn’t want (even if I could remove them). Mine actually didn’t even have a RAS on it when I was first issued it. I had to scrounge for one of those after we deployed. In the end, all I did was put rail panels and a VFG on it (we didn’t have weapon lights back then), so I pretty much added a bunch of weight that I didn’t use.

I’m not normally that fixated on details, but if I’m going to the effort of trying to clone a rifle for sentimental reasons and spending good money on it, I’d like to get it as close as possible. If I can’t get that close, then maybe buying a more affordable rifle (Colt) makes more sense.

I don't have the exact date off top of my head, but while Colt delivered the initial M16A4s (1996), FNMI picked up the contract not too long thereafter.

I would say that if you received a brand new rifle in 2005, it was most likely FNMI (unless it was "new old stock").

Not to mention any M4 you would have been likely to see around that time would most likely be Colt (sole-source manufacturer from 1994-2013, though some FNMI lowers were converted to M4/M4A1 specs as well).

PSA 20" FN CHF Uppers are in stock (They do have M4 Feed Ramps). I did IM PSA, and they told me that they might have round end caps or triangle end caps depending on what's available at the time.
319.99 without BCG/CH
399.99 w/ BCG/CH

BTW, I kept this for a secret for a while. I bought a couple of these FN uppers from Damage Industries for 65$ with dust cover and forward assist. They have the F forge code, and I emailed and IM'd Damage Industries twice, and have been confirmed that all of these do have F marking.
102.35 with Dust Cover and Forward Assist
79.95 Stripped

So if you want a "cheap" FN A4 style upper, you can get one for 319.99+ 79.95, re-barrel the upper and sell the PSA one for 50$ or so.

Hope I was some help to someone

Thanks for the reply, Augee. It was definitely a brand new rifle - I remember when the batch of ten showed up at the unit. I have a feeling I’ll have to go the Colt route, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. Making a good clone of an FN M16A4 from that era would probably be too difficult, since I’m pretty sure it had the older / classic style FN logo.

Thanks, I didn’t really realize that was something you could have done. I may pick up one off he 80% Cerro lowers that seem to be reasonably priced.

Does anyone have any photos of a 2004-2005 era FN M16A4 lower? I’m pretty sure the one I was issued had the traditional FN rollmark on it, but the only photo I have of mine is from the right side of the rifle. All the photos I’ve found online show the current simplified logo like on their military collector rifle. Can anyone confirm if they had the old logo on earlier production M16A4s?

They do it twice now. My son did it as a class then again during BWT-Basic Warrior Training at Parris Island. The class one he did with a buddy and then during BWT he did with his fire team.

Based on what my son told me, in that pic at the top of the page, that looks like BTW at Pendleton.
