I wasnt aware of ambi safety having ever been issued on the m16a4 period. I removed the ambi from my colt and installed a regular colt safety

Im not sure if this has already been posted here, but i ran across this pic online earlier today.

For those looking for ACOGs, check Universal Mania. I bought mine from them a little over a year ago. Best price I could find, I think $1277, and received it within a week.

I saw them when I was looking for mine, but their 1 star review...lots of people complaining about getting ripped off.

That's why I went with Optics Agent, best price I could find.

Hmm, wonder if things changed since I got mine. The scant reviews I found were favorable at the time.
Now, the price is over $1400.

ETA: I see that they're $1466 at OA as well. Damn, things really went high since I got mine. Guess when I complete my M4 clone, I'll be going M68 CCO instead.

How has it been?

The first 5 pages of reviews are nothing but negative.

Optics Agent shows $1400, but you place it in the cart for the discount.

The TA31RCO-A4  is $1256 at Optics Agent.

Ah, didn't know about the discount; that's a good price.

Got mine 13 months ago. Maybe I just got lucky?

I would say based on those reviews you did indeed get lucky.

Alot of those complaining are saying they cannot get refunds and have to contact their banks or card issuers.

As the A2 started to get replaced by the A4, did the uppers just get replaced or was it entire rifles?

My A2 had a redone A1 lower, then we got new uppers but kept the lowers.  Only when we switched to M4s did we get new lowers.  This was the NG so YMMV

So a guy is offering a FN Military Collector 20" A4 for my Colt 6920 SOCOM with M4A1 lower. I know brand new the FN is more expensive. However, unless Colt brings back the SOCOM line the M4A1 is very hard to get and people pay stupid prices just for the lower.

I really want a M16A4 clone, and had always planned on saving up for a Colt AR-15A4 and adding the knights rail myself.

So what are your thoughts? Decent trade or am I crazy?

* I should add it's one of the newer ones with Safe/Semi/Auto

thats kind of a hard one. Id love to have an m4a1 lower for my m4a1 build, but the colt m4 carbine roll mark works for me too. I love my colt a4. If im not mistaken, the FN roll mark should be safe/semi/burst. Im pretty sure the m16 is burst while the m4a1 is auto.

Depends on the unit.  I've seen both ways, complete guns vs replace uppers.  One thing to consider is that when up grading to M16A4 its just not a upper swap.  Lower nomenclature needs to be changed also.  IE "2" needs to be struck out on M16A2 and "4" restamped.  If a lower also went from "BURST" to "AUTO" ie on M4 to M4A1 that will be struck out and restamped.  That would require a 91F (small arms repair) to do so a unit may not have a 91F.

Really? Just on the M16A4's or all of them?

I ask because the last factory built 20 in barreled rifle I had, came with a round handguard cap. It was an A2 Colt.

Could be some quirky commercial shit Colt pulled on the AR15A2. We know they like to dabble from time to time (I.E. sear blocks, odd sized FCG pins etc)
So I believe you. But their military models use the triangle cap

That's the only explanation I have....It did have the non spec FCG pins and the sear block.

As for the triangle handguard cap, I learned something today.

Dog1, I've seen you here for a long time and got some respect for you.  If it was anyone else I'd outright tell them they were wrong.

I'd suspect that you are remembering seeing the round tabs on the A2 handguards which would make it look round.

But who knows, there are all sorts of oddities out there.

You know, you could be right. It was early late 90's early 2000's when I had that rifle.

I have had so many AR's and built so many, they all run together.

It's all good...

I just finished my A4 clone. It started its life as a lowly PSA freedom rifle, but was totally dismantled. The good things were kept, but the bad and ugly are on armslist (if you're interested). However, I need a few things to complete it . . . But on a budget. I did sit on the Santa's lap at my local mall and asked him for an ACOG. It can't hurt, right? But an ACOG will probably never be a part of this particular rifle. I'm looking for a sling (2 point), mag pouch and bayonet. Can anyone point me to these items? But remember on a budget.

The rifle, as its pictured, has a Windham Weaponry Govt. Profile, 1.7 twist, chrome-lined barrel (they gave me 10% off and a free +.040 front sight post for $193.58 shipped!), PSA bolt carrier with a JP Enterprises HP bolt, KAC M5 rail and verticle grip I found on ebay for about $160.00 (YAY! ebay!). The rest is pretty much what I could find on sales (I'll upgrade the trigger when I decide what I want). All told I built it pretty cheap.

Like I said earlier, I would search the EE, put a want to buy ad in the WTB - AR section.

If you want an appropriate optic, an Aimpoint PRO could be a good candidate, while not in military use, it does look like pretty much any other Comp M2 or M3.

Bayonets: (I don't know if they're a good price, I only know the pricing for M7 bayonets)...

I've seen the TA01NSN on the A4.  Don't forget the Army M150.
There is also the MARS sight which was used in very limited numbers.  (It sucks, I had one)

One of the units that shared an Armory with us had Eotech 516s that were camo.  I never did find out who they were and if the Eotechs were painted or purchased that way.

The TA01 and TA01NSN reticle is calibrated for a 14.5" barrel. But I am sure someone somewhere threw an M4 calibrated TA01NSN on their issued A4. Especially in the Army, as the TA01NSN was mass issued to them in the GWOT

He means chrome lined 1/7" twist, 20", F marked FSB, parkerized, rifle feed ramps at a minimum.

Sput, I got no idea bro. Harder to track down these days.

Would keep an eye peeled on the EE

I used a Windham 20" barrel assembly on my first a4 and just installed a taller front sight post. wasnt a big deal to me and it shot good. I have a Colt a4 now and although the fsb isnt stamped with an "F", they say all their fsb are F spec height now a days.. I have seen new a4 barrel assemblies posted a couple times on the EE but good luck. Otherwise you could get an FN or Colt barrel and have a smith install an F marked front sight base

That's the one I used. And as was mentioned, just put the +.040 front sight post in. It took me all of 30 sec. Windham Weaponry actually gave it to me for free with the barrel.

Another option is PSA. They carry 20" CHF FN uppers. Solid barrels and they have the FSB. Unfortunately, they are not in stock at the moment. Not sure when they will.

All that, but I'd rather have M4 ramps. It's just easier to find ramped uppers.

I'll look into the WW and PSA barrels, I thought about just buying a Colt AR15A4 and calling it good.

I'll look into the WW and PSA barrels, I thought about just buying a Colt AR15A4 and calling it good.

Most everything I can find either has a standard FSB or is Nitrided.
What do you mean by "proper" barrel?
He means chrome lined 1/7" twist, 20", F marked FSB, parkerized, rifle feed ramps at a minimum.

Sput, I got no idea bro. Harder to track down these days.

Would keep an eye peeled on the EE

buy a Colt ar15a4 and call it good. My first a4 was done with a a WW barrel (they have m4 ramps) but I love my new colt. Id rather have the colt anyday and if not Colt, then FN

I just entered Arizona, and I get to taste a little freedom. My A4 finally gets to feel like a proper A4... I couldn't find my KAC pistol grip

I paid a 10$ premium for that stock, but I think it was well worth the money.

I'm also looking to find a proper barrel, the barrel on this build is a Colt M16A2 barrel with a taller front sight post. I've been keeping an eye out for those palmetto FN barreled uppers. I plan on getting one of those and getting an FN upper and matching them together for a pseudo-FN build.
