For page 35 ownage,

Here are some more details on my A4 type.

Notice the stock and carry handle markings...

The wrench flats on the A2 Flash Hider...

The contact area between the Carry Handle and the Upper receiver

And for good measure...

Also the upper and handle are  a lighter gray color, and the FSB is not F marked.
Consensus is that the upper is factory Colt built.

And Look Ma, no edit.

That looks like an early carry handle judging by the contours of the inside of the carry handle.

Where is the "C" & then forge mark on that upper?

There is none, But I asked scottryan about the upper, and the "MMA" carry handle, with the contact type to the upper,  the matching color of the upper and Carry handle, the Barrel with the off-set wrench flats A2 flashhider and peel washer all indicate  an early 90's colt upper.

That is what I am basing this on. I think Colt was the first to come out with the flat top in its current form, so maybe they did not mark the forgings as there were no other manufacturers of it at that time...(kinda like the first M16s and M16A1s)

Kind of toying with the idea of building either one of these or a SAM-R upper. I could get out a little bit cheaper going with the A4 but wouldnt want to at the cost of some gained accuracy.

Just how much more "accurate" would the SAM-R upper with FF "match" barrels (Kreiger/Douglas/WOA etc) be over say a standard Colt/FN/BCM upper with an M5 RAS on board? Or am I just splitting hairs?

It will be more accurate, no doubt about that. The A2 barrels are chrome lined and any pressure exerted on the barrel will shift POI. Also, you will have a 3-9X (?) scope on the SAM-R as opposed to at most a 4X ACOG on the A4. The SAM-R upper will be two or maybe three times as much factoring in the barrel, rail, gas block, and depending what scope you use. Which would you shoot more? Would it just be a safe queen?

It wouldnt be a safe queen but not a beater either. I would probably run a few hundred rounds through it or more a year.

I sold my ER Shaw 20" varmint/SPR type rig a year ago with the intention of upgrading to a 20" SAM-R/SPR type of scoped AR this year. The only reason im thinking about going the A4 route is because I have a TA-31 sitting in the safe with no place to call home right now and I could get out considerbly cheaper building the A4 around a BCM 20" upper as opposed to buying quality leupold glass and having a quality upper built around a kreiger/douglas or WOA barrel.

The max range that I would realistically be shooting this rig would be 300 or so yards and the bulk of the shooting would probably be done at 100-300 yards. I have "long range" precision rigs in both 308 and 50bmg but have always kept an accurized ar in 223 in the stable up until I sold the ER Shaw rifle.

I really like your setup.  I'm hoping to have my M16A4 clone up and running in a few months.  The lower is complete minus the buttstock, and the upper still needs a barrel which is on its way from Talon Arms...Sabre Defence 20" 1/7 gov't profile.

It is an RRA Std.A4 Chrome Lined HBAR. I'm not crazy about it being an HBAR, but since this is more like my bench-gun it isn't a huge deal. I'm seriously concidering swaping it for a Sabre upper once the tax return comes in...

Maybe you could have ADCO reprofile it for you? I wish I would have done that with my Bushy M16A4 clone I had. Now I'm looking to build up an M16A4 clone myself!

I turned 21 in December, so I was finally able to pick up my stripped lower from my FFL. It's been there since the middle of October.

Can't wait to get my lower parts kit and build it up!

ETA: Oh, and while I was at my FFL, I saw a stripped Rock River lower for $198, and a complete Rock River lower for $475.

Replaced the M5 RAS on my A4 with a DD M4 RIS II.  I like the RIS II much better.  Slightly lighter overall and free floats the barrel.  Bottom is still removable for cleaning or mounting a M203.  I really like to torque down on the sling so this will eliminate POI shift there.

I'd call KAC and ask. No email, phone call.

I needed the same screw last summer and emailed them through the website.  Within a couple of days someone replied and shortly afterwards sent me spare screws and a spare barrel nut clamp.    A phone call would probably speed it up a little though.  They also included a nice KAC catalog.

For a proper A4 you need the KAC M5 RAS rail.

WHAT?

$350 at Bravo Company! I don't have a thing to mount to the rails, just going to do it for the look but just changed my mind.

The KAC M5 rails can be found on the EE from time to time on the low to mid $100s.  My brother got a barely used set of M5 rails w/ panels and vfg before Christmas for $140.

+1 I remember seeing a few sets for under 100 bucks sans VFG and panels. I got mine for 150 with panels and VFG.

You may also need a new front sight base with bayonet lugs.  If you are doing this, then go for the "F" stamped base.  It is a slightly different hight which lines up better with BUISs on a "flat top" upper receiver.

Current configuration... got a Specter Gear sling and Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40mm scope for Christmas, it is mounted with a set of steel Burris rings... I can fit 10 sheets of paper between the scope and rail, lol

I'm saving up for a LaRue LT104, so these will have to do for now!

A SAM-R with a free-float match barrel, match trigger and Leupold MRT scope would definitely be more accurate than an A4.
Here is the type of accuracy I'm getting from my A4 at 100 yards.  Not really a tack driver, but good enough for a general purpose combat rifle.

55gr FMJBT gunshow(?) bullets, 24.5gr AA2230, LC brass.

75gr HPBT PRVI bullets, 22.5gr AA2230, LC brass.

75gr HPBT Hornady bullets, 22.5gr AA2230, LC brass.

My A4gery...

Barrel = Sabre 1/7 gov't profile with regular plastic handguards.

Scope = Trijicon ACOG TA31RCO-A4

Trigger = regular Bushmaster lower and LPK.

I've been very taken with this M16A4 since I found out about it a month or so ago. While I don't want a full rifle, I've decided to make a carbine version - 16" medium-contour M4-profile barrel, 1:7, with mid-length gas system and 9" hand guard; A3 upper with handle and M16A1 butt stock. I'm not using optics any more so the iron sights will remain. I'm using my Colt 6721 lower for the project. If I like this carbine as much as I think I will, I'll put a lower together for it. This set-up will also mount a bayonet. Since I already have a great Colt carbine, you may wonder why I would build another 16" AR. The reasons are: for the 1:7 barrel, the longer sight radius because I use the irons, the gas system benefits, the look, the stock and the bayonet. If this thread still exists in three months (when they expect to have the barrel and can build the upper) I'll put a pic up.

You're right, its not really 'kosher' for this thread, but will be an unusual variation on the theme. I guess I will call it a 'K.I.S.S. M16A4-like Carbine' for lack of a better term. I have ordered the CMMG A3 upper half and bought an Aero lower, a Colt M16 BCG and a CMMG A1-type stock all in the last 24 hours. Unfortunately the upper won't be here until probably April unless I get lucky. Pictures for sure then! This means the Colt 6721 will remain completely unmolested. I didn't like the idea of breaking the staking on the buffer tube nut to change out thestock anyway. That way, if I go nuts and decide to sell the Colt, it will be unmessed-with.
