It was fairly common in the early-2000s.  The M16A4 had initially been fielded as the MTOE weapon for most combat arms to replace the M16A2, before the Army decided to go balls out and make the M4 Standard A.  A lot of mech units had gotten them initially and used them early in the war before going to M4 fleets, and a lot of them are still in the inventory.

The Marine Corps, of course, held on to the M16A4 for far longer than the Army, and has been issuing the ACOG as standard, so the most common and "iconic" configuration of the A4 tends to be a 31-series ACOG of some sort, not to mention the fact that many Army units continued using the A4s as SDM-Rs after being fielded M4s, usually ICW an ACOG.

The A4 I had in basic had a PAQ4C.  Most of the Marine A4's I see have either a PEQ2 (older) or a PEQ15 (newer).

Holy Shit. You got a paq-4 in boot camp?

I joined in '09 and only seen PEQ16's in the USMC.

Right; sling still seems to have that Vickers tab (in an OD-ish finish); the rest of the sling looks black indeed.

Interesting.

I looked up the FN and it would appear the prices sit around $1600 and the Colt prices seems to vary from arouund $800 to over $1000.

Colt.

You may even (as I probably would) disregard the wrong roll marks that FN has put on their collector FN, but in any case, the name Colt for me always comes first, regardless.

I have a clone A4 but a Colt M4 that I love dearly.

Where are you finding $800 Colt AR15A4?!

I'd go with the Colt. Better deal, and you can find a new KAC M5 for much cheaper than FN cost.

When we first got A4's, we got them without the KAC rail systems, they had the regular ribbed A2 handguards. We had M68s and PAQ4s which we mounted to the handguards with the old mount that clamped on to the barrel through the vent holes in the top handguard. In about 2005/2006 we went to all M4's -- generally squad/team leaders had PEQ2As, regular joes had PAQ4Cs. In 2010 my guard unit was way overstrength and the state gave us a bunch of M16A4s with KAC rail systems to cover the lack of weapons (didn't have enough M4s for everyone since our MTOE was way overbooked). By that time, every gun had PEQ-15s, most people had M68s (CompM4 versions) but we got a couple of PVQ-31 ACOGs -- we used those when we went to SDM school, we didn't have the dedicated SDM-Rs with the free floated DD 12.0 rails or anything cool like that.

In the Corps in 2006 most units I saw had A4s with PEQ2s.  PEQ4s were rather rare.

Most of us had the RCO-A4 model ACOG, but there were still some TA31F models floating around.  No backup sights were issues, and we carried our carry handles around.

There were some oddities, like one unit that shared the armory with us( I don't know who they were) had a bunch of Eotechs.  I can't recall at the moment if they were 516s or 555s.

We didnt have much for photographers at bootcamp but I suspect anyone whose enlisted has blown frozen mudsnot from their nose.

On that note. Has anyone noticed there seems to be a lot of bootcamp pics around? When did that start?

I just finished up one of my latest builds. It is a basic M16A4 clone. The upper is from Windham Weaponry. Their 20" Gov't profile barrels are fantastic. The lower assembly was built using a Mckay Enterprises A2 lower receiver and a USGI stock assembly from White Oak Armory. Internal parts are from PSA.

I already have another M16A4 clone that I did several years ago.

You voted and this week's Corps top shot comes from Cpl. Patrick H. Owens.

He captured this photo of a Marine officer candidate breaking the surface of 'The Quigley' in Marine Corps Base Quantico.

I am in college now and went to OCS two summers ago and will be going back this summer to finish my training (two 6 week sessions spread out between freshman and junior years). The A4's at OCS are pretty bare of finish and all have kac rails, carry handles, and rail panels. All of the ones I saw were FN. No live ammunition is used at OCS so these rifles have pretty much had blanks used extensively for their entire life.

As for "The Quigley", I thought that was a lot of fun

You thought the Quigley was fun?  Either there's something wrong with you Candidate or your Sgt Instructors were not doing their job as well as they should have.  The only thing good about the Quigley is that it was probably the least likely place you'd become a heat casualty.
