Comp M2 was introduced in Y2k.

I suppose Comp Ms were probably still in the supply chain though.

No expert on what big blue water Navy issued.  I would assume the M2 however.

I'll bump this post to ask about the buttstock in particular. I have a line on a B5 SOPMOD stock without that qd cup, is that correct for Block 1? Or is my LMT acceptable as is?

B5 didn't get the contract until 2011. Well after the Block 1 was over with. Correct manufacturer for the SOPMOD stock for the block 1 program would be Crane and LMT.

Late to the party but here's my first M4/M4A1 SOPMODish attempt.  Have been wanting to do one for a while now.  I was on teams during the A2 era, '88-'92, and always thought it was the wrong long gun for SF, even white teams.  By the time M4 and SOPMOD came around I was doing staff stuff and only got to fire for orientation, never was issued.  Still, it's an itch that needs scratching

I recently picked up an LE trade in LE6920 from AIM that was going to be the basis for the build.  Found a Colt 14.5 barrel and was just going to swap out the 16 and go from there.  Then spotted a local seller with an "M4 Carbine" rollmarked lower and that just looked so much cooler than the LE only rollmark, so I grabbed it.  Then I needed a salty Colt upper (found one on GB), a salty KAC RAS (found one locally), and a KAC BUIS (found a 200-600 on the EE).  I had the ACOG on an A4 clone so I moved that over (the A4 will become a sort of "pre" Mk12 designated marksman build).  Have a side swivel in bound from the EE and an ambi safety from PSA.  Will look for a light (SF M951/2?) and that will about do it for me. Not crazy about the VFG and not going to paint it. FH is a BCM A2X, pin & weld done by John Thomas Retro Arms Works.

The build so far:

$125 for the NOS KAC lower rail still in the bag, I hadn't ordered from them in a few years but don't recall ever having a problem, I ordered some Norotos Rhino IIs from them in the past.

Block II prototype is finally functional, barrel came in a few hours ago. 10/07 date code so just outside of being clone correct, but considering the rail and charging handle aren't either it's acceptable to me (and it does fit in with the time frame for the rail, so it kinda counts). Still missing a Colt bcg and the accessories, but I can get used to the irons in the meantime. Incredibly well balanced, the handguard is incredibly light weight. Only weighs around half a pound. I'll get a proper clone lower probably after the first, don't feel like paying for a form 1 if they're gonna be free in five months. Next on the list is the bcg and then an SU-237. Also got the Shurer build coming along, hope to have both uppers complete by the Clone Rifles shoot in October.

2007 Colt gov profile 14.5" barrel
2004 Colt Cardinal forge upper, 75th RR surplus
Original Crane tested A.R.M.S. #40L tan anodized prototype, circa late 2004-early 2005
AFSOC issued A.R.M.S. #50M-CV tan anodized, 2007-2009 time frame
PRI Gasbuster military latch charging handle
CQD front sling mount
TangoDown BGV-MK46, modified to fit the S.I.R. lower rail panel

Lower isn't correct, it's just the only SBR lower I've got since the upper isn't pinned

I did something very stupid today and ordered a Colt M4A1. I play to put my spare TA31RCO on it. I already have a working gun and now I have another lol.

Does anyone know if the Colt SOCOM comes with a USGI sling? I'm thinking of also ordering the longer 70+ inches usgi sling.

A few small updates, added two new contracted parts:

Now I'm just one 30mm Aimpoint away from it being complete.

For now it'll have to be a "MN National Guard 2020 riots" clone. I saw a lot of National Guard with M4s without optics during that time, anyone know why they deployed without optics or are optics not left on the guns?

Same reason they've got UCP IOTVs and M16A2s (or even A1s), they get hand-me-downs and whatever's lying around in inventory. The guns work fine with irons, no sense in buying them a bunch of optics on guns that aren't expected to actually be used in combat. Units that deployed to the Middle East did get ACOGs and PEQs and stuff, but the majority of units that stayed stateside didn't really need to spend that money gearing up. As M4A1s get phased out for the infantry the optics and accessories on those will most likely go to the National Guard and Reserves

For now it'll have to be a "MN National Guard 2020 riots" clone. I saw a lot of National Guard with M4s without optics during that time, anyone know why they deployed without optics or are optics not left on the guns?

Looks like their rear sights are folded down.  Bet they don't even have loaded mags.

The chances of them having ammo in those mags is very low. Most likely, they have an assault bag and their FLC in the Humvee with some extra mags, albeit probably empty mags.

I can attest to this. Most likely empty mags and they MIGHT have 10 rounds issued to them with strict orders not to even think about loading it up. That's how it was for us every hurricane duty. 10 rounds in a mag, leave it in your pocket/FLC/ruck, empty or no mag in the rifle.

During the riots, my buddy told me the NCO in charge of each small group was the only one with ammo and it was only 10 rounds.

Harken back to basic for guard duty with a M16A1 and 3 live rounds.  Later pulled night Staff Duty at SOCOM in the mid 80s with a M1911 and 5 rds in the magazine.  OG107 jungle fatigues, green beret and a M151 jeep.

The matech rear sight is a very capable aiming device. If you can’t hit something with it then you’re not a good shooter and optics won’t help just enhance your bad fundamentals. Your build is sufficient enough for combat.

Locally I’ve seen this configuration with the base guards. They usually have a carry handle or matech rear sight as their aiming devices. I once seen they had an eotech. The problem is most of the red dots are battery powered so it means they have to bring out more potential items and since it’s mostly a duty assignment where someone gets voluntold to do it I doubt they’d be carrying batteries or even go buy one.

The Block II prototype build is coming along very nicely, picked up a surplus SU-231 for it. I'll track down an SU-237 for it eventually but the Eotech looks pretty nice on it, and was about a third of what I see those ACOGs going for. Got a VITAL-2 for pretty cheap, didn't come with a pressure switch but it's mainly just for looks at the moment. I know it isn't clone correct, I'll get an LA-5 after I get a PVS-14 to actually use it with. Next up in the build is gonna be a correct lower, starting to gather parts for it but I'll wait until January for a free tax stamp since I won't be doing a pin and weld on the upper.

To paint or not to paint? Getting closer and closer to finishing my first block ll and i've had thoughts about giving it a good shot of some camo, but just how the rifle sits is definitely a vibe. Am I condemning all the parts I've tracked down by laying the ole rostellum on them? Will the cloner keyboard commando's cringe? Or do I spray away?

Never a wrong way.  Rattle can improves with using it and giving it the worn look.  Its also never permanent as can be stripped off.

Awesome I’m anticipating grabbing some color samples from the local terrain and getting crafty. Besides rustolium what other paints should i look in to?
