Sure did, and not only on this thread.  But considering staff's overwhelming effort to fix it on the old site, and all the NEW problems this gee-whiz new site that looks like total fucking ASS on a normal computer has generated, I'm sure we'll see a fix shortly!

Dude, if you think this is bad, you should have seen what Sniper's Hide did a few years back. I bitched so hard Frank banned me, lol. I have no regrets either. Shit was (and probably still is) absolutely horrible. Indescribably bad.

I mean, I shit you not, he removed Bbcode entirely, and turned the whole site into a fantasy football/all major sports forum, and you actually had to search for the actual "Sniper's Hide" part of the website, and even then it was entirely different.

Well, in any case, the chode done ruined his site. He's at least partially to blame.

It sucks too, because it was a good site, with good info, mostly good people, fairly tight knit, and then it's basically ruined overnight.

Anyway, pic thread;

I saw a FSP FDE rail on the EE a few days ago for $400.  Thought about buying it, but I figured I didn't want to be broke and have two unfinished clones

Is it just me or is the kac taupe front sight the hardest part to buy?  I have everything except that.

Even a Ris ii I don't mind- $400 but you're paying for a 4lb block or so of billet 6061 aluminum.  Then a CNC has to make a billion passes on it, including those sweet scallop cuts.  So I understand that.

But $200 (half the price of a Ris ii) for a front sight?  There's just no justifying it no matter how much I try to convince myself lol.

KAC makes very good stuff.  I love everything they make.  But the prices are just made up from throwing a dart at a dart board, I swear.   The cost has absolutely no relationship to the product.

sigh..

Perfect example of smart marketing.  KAC (and everyone else with .gov contracts) realizes that the civilian market wants WHATEVER the military has.  That's why you pay $190 for a $20 hunk of metal.

EDIT:  It's also why I'm going to be paying $900 for a M4A1 lower next week

I don't think it's smart marketing. They could sell them for $120/each and keep supply up with demand and take in more cash than they are right now by releasing tiny batches at $180-190 a pop.

I saw a NT4 flash hider on the KAC website a few years back for like $550 or something crazy like that (I guess they still make it, so it's probably still on there). Anyway, there was another flash hider that did essentially the same thing (attaches NT4, hides flash, etc.) right next to it for about 180-200. Right underneath the $550 FH had a asterisk saying "it's $550 because that's what the government pays, and we aren't allowed to charge you a lower price", or something to that effect.

The point is, I don't know if they're just bullshitting me to have an excuse to charge more, or if that's actually a real thing (kinda makes sense though). However, at the same time, it just shows you how much the government overpays for shit.

I mean, think about it. If you had a part that one person was offering you $550 for and another person was offering you $200, you'd take the $550 every time, especially if this person is the US government, and is ordering metric-fuck-tons of them all the time.

And this is odd, because I just responded to another comment in the CQBR thread saying something similar about the government overpaying for shit. Seems like a theme tonight.

It's not the normal one. I forget what it's called, and I don't see it on their site anymore, but it looked similar to their "Triple tap flash suppressor/compensatetor", only mixed with the normal NT4 flash hider.

Yeah the triple tap is different.  It was made of inconel which is allegedly extremely expensive.. and the manufacturing process was supposed to be very difficult.  Still, outrageous price.

When I was looking for my FDE RIS II FSP there was an abundance of black models in the EE and even a few new online. Considerably less money than the FDE version IIRC.

Small items like the KAC front site are way harder to fixture and machine then something like a rail extrusion. That's one reason for the cost. Rails cost minimal to machine due to it being way close to final form from the extrusion die.
The triple tap is done mostly with an EDM...and they are sloow ( compared to regular 2-3-4 axis machining)

I would be very curious to see if another company like DD or geissele could reproduce the exact front sight and see what their cost is.  Because KAC is already notorious for astronomical prices.

That's a good point, but that sight isn't that complicated, and with a govt contract wouldn't any sensible company make overruns to avoid re-tooling?  They released small batches for years.  I suspect they aren't doing small runs but rather releasing small quantities to keep demand/price where it's at.
Link Posted: 1/16/2017 11:04:55 AM EDT

IMO it boils down to this- the US government is stupid.  They pay stupid prices all the time.  They could have paid half that price by either choosing a different sight that is equally capable, or having companies bid on an existing govt owned design.  But KAC has a relationship with them and knows how to win those contracts.

A very small percentage of the civilian market will pay a premium to have a clone, but 99% of the market is not buying it.  KAC just simply doesn't care, they care about govt contracts- where the money is, and where prices don't reflect reality or competition lol.

That sight is complicated for multiple reasons. I owned a few CNC machines at one time and that sight and all its parts are way more intricate than what you think. Every surface needs machined, on all the parts. This is why the push towards certain type of forgings / castings and MIM parts (or 3D metal printers)...they reduce cycle time. The fixtures and flipping of the parts require downtime on the machines, even with multi pallet horizontals. I have never seen a part that I feel I could not "R-n-D" (Rip off and Duplicate) here if money was not an object. Its really easy to copy things honestly...I have friends that still have shops that I could bring things like SF 4 prongs too and have them made, and honestly you would never tell the difference...at that point its an exact copy. Items get CMM'd, Spectro'd for material and coatings, then drawn in Solid Works, then machined...everything down to the laser markings and the logos can be duplicated. The problem is cost and quantity...more you make the cheaper they are. I am sure someone could make the KAC front sight cheaper, but how much cheaper is the question? Food for thought.

I hear ya.. But given KAC's track record.. i bet it's like an LMT / B5 situation.  Those stocks can be sold for $100, but LMT sold them for $200.  If they couldn't make them for less, apparently someone else could.
