So I was thinking about going for a Recce build, but I also have a MK12 Mod 1, so I'm thinking the two uppers would be too similar.  Now I am thinking of doing a mini Seal Recce build with the Medium FF RAS.  Anyone know what barrel length would make the AEM5 sit flush?  Maybe around 13.5 or so?

@Movistar could help you with that. I think he has a 13.X mini recce.

I think 13.7 sits flush with a 10.75 urx like on movie stars rig. Isn’t the medium FF RAS 10-3/8?

Ditch Mk12 go NSW Recce!

I was thinking about selling my Mod 1 and the 3.5-15 NXS on top but I sat it down and stared at it for a while today and just couldn’t post them for sale .  I was going to keep the Mod 1 and was in the process of building the Recce but figured they were too similar to have both.  That’s why I was thinking the shorter version.  Plus I still have a x24 NXS to use.

Hey gents. With regards to the medium RAS and flush AEM5 question i would go with 13.5. Mine is 13.7 and I have a quarter inch between the can and the rail. I should add that my Rail is a URX 3.1 in 10.75 and it is timed completely flush against the receiver (this can also effect length but in a very small way).

Hah thanks. My colt buffer spring is wearing out, it’s got about 15k on it.  Ejecting at 1 o’clock with 77gr. Ordered a Red Sprinco.

Shot some older hand loaded 77TMK. It didn't like them very much. Shot 5 1.5 moa groups. Shot one group with dirty Tula. It was 1.5 moa as well. Need to get my hands on some factory match ammo and start developing a load for it. See what bullet it likes.

Shot 1/3 ISPC steel at 25 yards. Doing 22422 drills with a full size Carboard ISPC in the middle. 2.5 power wasn’t bad but I’d like a Docter up top.

I've got this MRE sitting in a box. Other than Lilja, who has match grade barrels with carbine gas in the 14.5"-16" range? I seem to be having a hard time finding any.

though it's not clone Compass Lake Engineering can spin you whatever you want.  I had them do a 14.5" Recon barrel profiled for the ops inc brake/collar with a matching bolt and it's flawless.

Frank was who I dealt with and he originally wanted me to do a carbine length gas.  I talked him into mid-length for use with my Med RAS.  I absolutely love it.
Shitty picture but you get the idea

Huge +1 for CLE. What blank did you work off of?

My Douglas shoots lights out. Though I'm getting evil thoughts of doing a 13" mid length.

I am thinking the same thing.  I have a Larue 18" Stealth I was going to have cut down for the Recce, but I am thinking about having it cut down shorter, possibly to 13.7" or 13.5" to sit flush with either the Medium RAS or a midlength URX.  Although I am not sure I would have enough room for the Ops profile.

Take a look at Spike's collar/block combo. I have one that I want to play with. It's a gas block and SPR collar in one so it takes up less barrel space and would allow you to run a shorter barrel.

It's pretty sweet from a concept standpoint. I was dreaming about a 16" rifle length the other day with the AEM5. How sweet of a shooter would that be? But I think you'd need a 16.5-16.7 to make it happen. I'm told a 13" midlength with the gas block collar combo would work with the AEM5 which would make for a nice mini recce setup. I'm contemplating trying that out and having the can sit a little further inside the PRI tube.

1.5 MOA with the magnification you have, is pretty darned good.   Although you might be the type that can do better.  For 100 yards you could try the 52's and see how tight they group.  But yeah, you may just need to find a load it likes better.  But still.....  1.5 MOA with 6x.....  Pretty   Darn    Good.

I did some quick measurements earlier and I am thinking I may just be able to get a custom collar to mount on the gas block shelf.  It would be about 2.5" from the muzzle to the beginning of the gas block seat if I had the barrel cut down to 13.7".  It wouldn't work with the Larue gas block since it covers the whole shelf, but a shorter gas block would leave it exposed.

Despite what Eyekahn wants I'm making this my ".mil'ish recce picture thread." That is a recce that uses commonly seen/issued parts. I'd love to see some of the cool combinations people can come up with using the "pool" of parts/brands we've seen.

Slight update: I swapped rings out because the old 1.00" Nightforce rings did not allow me to run my Butler Creek front cap and clear the recce rail. I didn't want to step up all the way to 1.125" rings so I found some 1.075" made by TPS (well respected in the PRS competitions and similar to NF in construction/design) which gave me just enough clearance without getting too high. I'm fond of 1.50" optic height so with the recce rail and these rings I'm at a very manageable 1.55".

I'm still debating on chopping all the way to 13" to shorten the package up but still take advantage of the midlength gas and AEM5 setup. I guess it would be a true proper mini recce at that point.

I love my 13.7 with the AEM5. I like the spikes gas block thing. But if you do that make sure you have a barrel with the correct size port. My Noveske Barrel has a huge port and I’d have been in trouble without my PRI adjustable block. Now if spikes made that block in an adjustable version.

That's a good point. I've got an already chopped (16 to 14.5) Novekse that would make a good candidate for the 13" but I haven't confirmed its accuracy yet. I currently have the Douglas in the 15" range which is proven but I'm hesitant to go any shorter on it in case I want to go back. I've become a big fan of the Bootleg adjustable carriers so I may throw one in here (gasp not clone correct) to throttle the gas.

ETA: And that build is incredible. URX AEM combo is always a good one. I recently came into a URX II rifle length that I thought about giving the recce treatment but I'm on the PRI train right now.

@Munzy Fulton carries Criterion 1:8 carbine gas HBAR barrels. That's what I was considering for mine, maybe with a set-screw match FSB. For an MRE a Criterion would be plenty IMO, paired with a S&B Short Dot or similar old school low-power variable.

Thanks man. I get the PRI train. I’m really into it. But for me the URX 3.1 is the first Rail I’ve truly loved. Meaning the first one I didn’t want to swap to something else the minute I installed it.

My Noveske Barrel is more accurate than both of my Douglas 18 inch barrels I owned. One HCS and one CLE. I did lose a little velocity but the plate still goes ping at 712 yards. It honestly did everything my Mk12 did. But it’s so much more balanced and easy to carry and use. While I ended up not loving the NX8 as much as I thought I Love NF still. I think the perfect optic for this rifle is the 2.5-10x24 with a MRDS on top.

You could just tape off the markings.
