Yes and there are still literally hundreds of people each year at the National Matches that do he same thing. You don't need a $90+ Leather sling to get the job done.

It came out a lot better than I expected and ADCO did a terrific job with everything including bead blasting the barrel. |

I couldn't justify getting a new barrel so I'll see how it shoots first. And I opted for the bead blasting after seeing Wheelman's, its pretty slick looking. |

I had this saved in my evernote account, don't know what photo it was referencing, though:
The picture may date to OIF 1. We did not have enough Desert MarPats at the time to go around and there was a message that came out prior to the operation directing units NOT to wear them as they were not yet the norm. Most ignored the message anyway. How is the SAM-R integrated into a Marine Squad? As I understand it, a Marine Squad consists of three fire teams and a Squad Leader. Each fire team consists of a Team Leader, Automatic Rifleman, Assistant Automatic Rifleman and a Rifleman. (Please correct me is any of this is wrong) So how does the SAM-R fit in? You are partially correct. Doctrinally the fireteam is setup the way you figured. However, the TO/E is being re-written to reflect the dedicated billet of a Grenadier (M-203) once again. (Some Infantry Battalions give this weapon to the Team Leader). It was changed to its current T/O in the late 90’s by mistake. (A long story) The new fireteam TO/E (back to the original) will be as follows: Fireteam leader – M-16A4 OR M-4 Grenadier – M-203 on an M-16A4 OR M-4 Automatic Rifleman – M-249 Rifleman – M-16A4 OR M-4 Statistics have proven that a Fire Team leader is too busy in a firefight to effectively employ the M-203. Instead of using it to suppress across a specific frontage and/or provide precision indirect-fires at hardened targets, it is often ignored because he is busy using the rifle and/or employing his team. (That is not to say that certain gifted individuals have not “cracked the code” so to speak, and have had success with it during their time a Team Leader.) Doctrinally, the weapon needs a dedicated individual to employ it based a relevant Tasking Statements and METT-T. There is no need for an “Assistant Automatic Rifleman” either - as the SAW in the Automatic Rifle role is NOT a crew served weapon. This particular issue arises from our decision in the late 1980’s to use a light-machinegun in the automatic rifle role. If you dedicate a Marine to follow the SAW in case he has to feed it or “assist” in changing the barrel, then for all intents and purposes, you take someone out of the fight. The SAM-R was the result of a requirements document written in the early 1980’s the identified a perceived “precision fires” gap in the Infantry Squad. Prior to the fielding of the RCO/ACOG, there were no scoped weapons in a Marine Infantry Battalion with the exception of the Snipers in the STA/SSP Platoon. After many tests on several weapons the code was cracked during a shoot-off in Guam in 2000. Several M-16A2s and M-16A4s were modified by the Marines in the Precision Weapons Shop at Quantico, Virginia. The original goal of the test was to validate the need for a Rifle Combat Optic. The by-product was a near-match grade service rifle capable of holding a minute angle (MOA) at 100 meters with standard M855 (A059) 5.56mm Ball Ammo. After 911, the Marine Corps stood up the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Anti-Terrorist) (4th MEB-AT). A requirements document was generated for a Designated Marksman weapon above and beyond the weapons organic to an Infantry Battalion. Someone remembered the Guam tests and re-christened the weapon the SAM-R. Once the capabilities of the weapon become known, everybody wanted some, but did not know really what to do with it. The weapons were never part of any official TO/E (Table of Organization/Equipment) and some units received more than others depending on operational tempo and deployment schedules. Several experimented with integrating the weapon into the Infantry Squad, but most units gave them to the Sniper Platoon for their spotters. They are no longer being manufactured and you would be surprised how few were actually built. Because they are hand made, inducting them into the maintenance cycle is always interesting. Sorry to have rambled, I hope I have answered your questions. S/F Gunner |

I read the original SDM-R training rifles came from Armalite so I figured I'd start with that too because it was cheaper to get a full rifle than Colt receivers and I couldn't find an FN lower without the laser engraved FN logo on the side. Barrel was swapped out for a WOA 1:8 20" SDM profiled stainless steel with a WOA set-screwed FSB. The DD M4 12.0 rail was harder than I thought it would be to source, but I got a like new condition system from someone after putting up a WTB add. From the pictures I could find, looked like Ergo rail panels were provided with the rifle, so I found a vendor selling four for $5 on ebay; the GG&G sling thing was $19 from Botach. The bipod is a Harris 9-13" S-L attached by an ARMS #32 adapter. Inside the upper I swapped the semi-auto Armalite bolt out for a Colt full auto bolt carrier group with a properly headspace bolt from WOA. The lower has stock Armalite internals with the exception of the Armalite two stage trigger being replaced by a KAC two-stage match trigger (which I never realized was such a pain in the ass to set up). The collapsible butt stock was removed and replaced by a mil-spec Colt receiver extension and A2 stock kit from Brownells. I topped it off with a Trijicon TA31F ACOG and a spare MaTech BUIS. It's 99% done and just waiting on a front sight post, then I'm going to zero it all sometime this week. |

A beautiful build, Doc.
I always liked the look of the USAMU SDM-R, but could never justify tying up all the parts to actually build one. I'd love to see the SDM-R re-imagined in an M4A1 format to "blend in" with the rest of the unit like the SDM-R does. ~Augee |

WOA had 1:8 16" barrels, but not 18" SDM barrels. Originally I was going to just rebuild an A4gery I had, but I figured the clearance Armalites at DSG were cheap enough to just use that as a basis for a new gun, and it would satisfy my cloner OCD where some of the original AMU trainer rifles were built on Armalites. The thing that I really liked about the full length SDM-R was the fluted barrel and DD rail weigh as much as the non-floated standard govt barrel. For a full length quad rail, the M4 12.0 is ridiculously light. |

Besides I specified 'place holder' |
| I have an early DD M4 12.0 rail but the barrel nut doesn't look like the ones on SDMs and the rail stops short of the FSB - leaving about a .5" gap. How many flavors of the DD M4 rail are out there? I'm guessing mine has an aluminum barrel nut instead of steel and the collar is not round but hex. |
| The 12.0s seem to have two basic setups... The round later versions and the early hex ones, there's also different places and styles of the laser markings. The army sdmrs had the hex ring. I have the second type with the round locking collar and it has a slight gap between the end of the rail and the fsb. |

I can't spend the $$ twice for the same scope.http:// <a href=http://i724.photobucket.com/albums/ww245/Davey_Sickboy/IMG_20150902_140827335_HDR-01_zpsm3ewgvox.jpeg</a>" /> How big a PITA is getting the Harris SL mounted to the ARMS #17 ? I have a spare Armalite upper & ARMS #17 tri-lock mount. The lgs a few blocks from my place has a rack full of Harris SL bipods and plan to snag one this week. Thanks! Fastfoot |

Says it's for rim fire rifles, that would not require a gas system. The gas ports have to be drilled out, then you'll have a functional replica! No reason it shouldn't work. Maybe clean cut the bayo lug off, go up from the bottom, weld back on. If I still worked in a machine shop I would gladly take on the challenge. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=391273543208&alt=web Shoulda bought my Wilson FSGB clone

So if one does purchase say an ARMS or PRI or something of the sort for around $200, then someday find the correct one for $460....now one would be spending close to $700 on a front sight for this gun.
