Does anyone posting here have an idea how close the KAK water cooled version is to production?   Last I heard they were waiting on receivers.

Great, thanks!  Now we're getting warmer.  However, those look beefier and differently sized/shaped than the ones I'm seeing on Amazon.

What's the make/model of the QD mounts?

Haven't seen QD sockets like you're showing but QD/rail mounts shouldn't be too hard to find.

Thanks again.

The QD mount on the handguard is made by Bravo Company (BCM-RSM-1913) same with the swivels. The attachment point on the stock is integral to it.

Took mine out to the range today for some break-in action. Had 150 rounds worth of links, a mix of 55gr .223 steel cased Wolf, Norma M193, and American Eagle 55gr .223.  Per the instructions I was supposed to use the supplied black buffer spring and buffer weight for the first 200 rounds but I forgot it at home so I had to use the H3 buffer and Springco Orange I had already installed in the lower.

The rifle cycled just fine with the Norma and AE (gas settings 6-12) but will intermittently not cycle the Wolf ammo. If lucky the rifle would get out 4 rounds before it fails to cycle. I kept the gas setting at 12 for the Wolf ammo.

My range doesn't allow super safe mode so I will save it for another day in the mountains.  @LimaSix, should I continue to swap out my H3 and Springco Orange and use your supplied black spring/buffer until the gun is fully broken in?

And yes, the gun was a head turner. The RSO who has seen almost everything still said he rarely sees any belt-feds at the range. He thought it was a FightLite but after a little education he might consider a Lima build in the near future.

What’s the riser height on the stock?
8/5/2026 9:36:03 PM EDT
[#12]
The riser is .75" which is a bit too high for my liking since the Aimpoint Pro has the ADM-68 low point. I need the .50" rise which will be perfect, or get a standard height Aimpoint mount.

Front is a Midwest Industries HK-style fixed front and rear is a LPA BAR11WD4. THe height difference between the Lima upper and the standard handguard is 0.75". The irons do not line up perfectly due to this offset but I was still able to successfully do a 50/200y zero.

H3 and sprinco orange is fine if its running! It will likely run the wolf eventually once its fully broken in. Worst case you can replace the installed .897 plunger with a .887 plunger and youll get a little more gas!

I used the .50 because the .75 was absolutely too high...despite everyone here saying the .75 was the best.  I actually ordered all three and just returned the .75 and .25.

Here's what I cooked up today. Lima-Lewis.

Had to turn down the barrel for a JP heat sink, its not ideal but for proof of concept.

Then I made a 22" aluminum shroud thats keyed to the RPD rail and is slotted where the gas tube enters the receiver as well as bored with a 3 degree taper.  Also cut the gas tube mount off of a vz26 bipod and turned a new ring to mount it on the shroud.

Gonna run home for ammo and the m145 and see if I can determine whether this was worth the effort at the range

Flipping sweet!!  Longtime Bump-Saw thread people will know my preference for the Bump-Lewis which became the FRT-Lewis.  And I want the same 20" barrel with 19" handguard for the Lima Six.  (But really it is a little weird since the Lewis didn't have a belt).

I need to think some more about how to test the efficacy of this setup but my first impression with an IR thermometer is that it's definitely helping.  Having some reliability issues as I break it in so no 100 round strings but definitely got through some 30-50 round strings and the barrel nut, heat sink both only got up to 200 degrees.

I should have brought one of my thermals.  And having the bipod way out there really does make for a well supported firing position. 4-5 round hits at 200 yards on a "D" plate was no problem.

I’m interested in seeing how much of a vacuum is put on the rear of the tube.

Be neat to do a 30rd belt with a smoke machine at the rear to see how much it actually sucks and pulls across the fins.

Going to try one of these cheap things.  Supposedly has 10 seconds of charge which should be plenty if the air is relatively still.

Gotcha. I don’t think I can convince my wallet to buy one, but I can dream.

I’ve been trying to decide on an optic to through on. I don’t want to spend a ton of money since it’s basically going to live there and get pulled out just for fun, maybe a random rifle match or something just for giggles. I guess maybe I’ll have to keep my eyes open for a used M2/3/4 and just chuck that on there.

Also, what cheek risers are folks throwing in their Magpul stocks? The 1/2” or 3/4”?

For risers, I'm using 3/4 and it works for me, but I could see how people might prefer 1/2.

Optics wise, I'm using an older 2.5x prism from PA.  It works and is cheap, but I'd prefer something with better image quality.

My SBR has this Holosun which has been sitting in my parts box for a long time because it's an odd height, but is perfect with a 1/2" riser on the Magpul:

The Lewis has the fixed stock version with adjustable riser and I've got it set closer to 3/4" to use with the m145 which sits higher than the Holosun.

Happy day, the mail man came. Prebuild mock up, this thing is going to look awesome.

I wanted to get barrel in tonight, but notice. RRH specifically calls out for the but to not bottom out against the receiver, so I was checking things with feeler gauges just make sure. Unfortunately, it works without shims but the cutout in the nut for the gas tube won’t quite line up. Hand tight without shims it’s perfect, but I’d either need a more shims (maybe .010”-.020” worth with a bad guess) to need to give it 35-40 ft/lbs or I’d need to crank it down with a lot of torque to get essentially a quarter turn of the barrel nut. I did use feeler gauges and there’s still no contact with the nut, about .010” of space between the gas tube and the nut.

I already had difficulty with the barrel nut wrench not fitting real well in the cutouts, so I’ll reassess in the morning. It already slipped out once, looked like only about 1.5 of the teeth were engaging, so I need to look at the wrench and see what’s intefering with the nut.

90% complete. I need to get a crow’s foot for my torque wrench to tighten down the MD. The KAK barrel has a swell right at the shoulder and my old DPMS wrench doesn’t have space to fit. Torqued the rail down, I’ll lock the RS gasblock screws after the 100 round break in. Still need to order a cheek riser, though currently it doesn’t feel too bad but when I slap the old Vortex I have on, it’ll give me a better idea. Only thing that slightly bugs me is the bipod; I wish it sat a little more flush with the rail, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Super safety should be here probably next week. I might slap a spare milspec trigger in just to get the break in done. It’ll be interesting to see how the Tromix buffer/carbine tube works.

Added a Grovtec rail wrap and swapped out the 3/4" cheek riser for the 1/2" piece. Noticed during my last break-in session the handguard (150rds) got a bit toasty under semi-auto fire. Going back to the range for more breaking in, this time utilizing used links for the steel cased Wolf ammo.

7.62 on DPMS LR308

Cramming it into an AR15 pattern lower would make too many structural compromises. That was my original plan but its a bad idea.

That makes sense, it is hard to tell the scale of this without a reference.

Maybe start it's own thread?

Between the water cooled KAK L6 and this, I'm never going to financially recover...

Oh!!  Hello!

Might I suggest the Lima Seven project start from the ground up with a dedicated Inoculum Group lower?

If it's strictly belt-fed, there's no need for a magazine well and adapter, and while there aren't readily available 7.62 nutsacks at this time (though I would wager they'd come along pretty quickly from places like Tribe Tactical), the Inoculum lower's profile would look a lot better than an unnecessary mag well.
I will not compromise!

There will be dedicated lowers available for the L7 as well.
