One of the trans people posts a lot on my towns facebook page. She wanted to let everyone know student loan debt is the reason many young people cannot afford mortgages. Her little friend chimed in with this comment. She has a PhD but it took her six years to find a salary job. She is just starting to save money for retirement at age 42. She's grossly underpaid at $56k a year in Massachusetts with a PhD. This other chick makes $80/hr as an aquarist?? These people are fucking bonkers.

A PhD in what?
Also, most jobs don't require that level of education. Seems to be a failure of planning. ETA: bachelors or masters is plenty for most professional careers. IMO you should have a reason beyond "I want a PhD" to go after one. |

It depends entirely on the field and the quality of the university the PhD is from. A PhD by itself doesn't mean much at all. If you have a PhD in medieval Spanish poetry from a shitty university, then a $56K job would be an impressive accomplishment. If you have a PhD in finance from a well-ranked R1 university, then a $56K job would to a pathetic failure. |

I'm a chemist (MS) and working in biotech so know a bunch of PhDs. Even in the sciences I know many that are struggling/have struggled particularly if they really want to stay in teaching/academic research. Tenure track faculty positions are rough to find and many languish in non-tract lecturer positions. The degree is certainly not a ticket to stardom, still need to put in the right kind of effort and have a decent personality to put the degree to work.

My wife has a PhD. She had no student debt because engineering graduate students get paid to do actual no-shit research. She got to be a lab slave for a few years, but graduated with zero debt and a useful degree.

Environmental Resource Manager here. Loved every day of work but wasted way too many years making in the low 20's hoping something would someday change. It didn't and broke my heart to leave it. I eventually ended up owning my own business and make more than I ever did working a FT job and two PT jobs at the same time. And I only work one week a month for 7 months doing it, and work more normal hours for 5 months. Sometimes you have to know when to give up. I should have done it long before I finally did. My degree means nothing to me. A total waste of $ other than some cool memories and experiences. |

I'm pretty happy that the lady is struggling. I don't have a degree but retired (fully) at 55 after owning my business for thirty years. All those air conditioned no-risk classes she paid for would have been MUCH more comfortable than spraying gel-coat on molds in a dirt floor pole barn in August in Texas.
