They seem to be making a comeback.

There was an article in Knives Illustrated a few months ago showing the latest models from Boker, Schrade, and Cas Iberia.

I found a survival knife in Ye 'Ol curiosity shop in Seattle back in the 80's.

It had a pot metal handle and cheap steel blade but god damn that thing would take a sharpening like no other knife I've owned since. Like surgical sharp.

I beat the fuck out of it for several years and it never quit.

I ended up losing it to the police after some friends and I slaughtered a bunch of chickens that didn't belong to us.

Miss that knife.

I remember going to the county fair and there was a dart-throwing game and the prizes were your choice of a RAMBO survival knife or a genuine Taiwan butterfly knife. I has $4 so I won both.

I had seen one back then and they wanted "big" bucks for it (no pun intended). Decided it was too much money - and it was a stupid decision. You had everything you needed in a survival knife and the propaganda at the time claimed you could rappel with it. Perfect for Tier 1 pretendos.

My mom gave me one of those when I was 12...I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.

I put firecrackers in my handle, with the matches and fishooks and cable saw.

Compass was sort of a POS and I had a Silva from the BSA...but I figured "better than nothing!"

I bought one in 1987 because they were so damned cool.  Never used it...not once!  ARFcom had a benefit auction a while back for a man who lost his son in a house fire, and I donated it.

I'm still on the lookout for the next generation of that knife, a very short-lived model called the Buckmaster 185.

Then I'm gonna print that ad out, give it to my kid, let him convince me to let him order one, take him to the post office to buy a money order, put it all in an envelope and mail it off to the same friend.

After two months I'll tell my friend to mail the knife on to us in a plain box with no packaging or paperwork.

LOL same experience as a kid- except it was a rose bush that got mine taken away from me.

Timely thread, my mother just returned it to me- hid my Rambo knife in a drawer and forgot it for thirty years

Shockingly good reviews on baled forums and bushcraft
View Quote

Are you going to pair your Apparo with your Armscor .38 Special for the ultimate jungle survival kit?

In all seriousness the Apparo has gotten  shockingly good reviews on Bladeforums and BushcraftUSA.  Some of the guys who had favorable comments are pretty demanding, so there is some quality in the knife.  Personally, I think the hollow handle adds some nostalgia value, but it's decent steel and you can baton it through some serious wood without snapping it at the tang.  If it came in a version without the saw back I would jump all over it.

When we were kids, my buddy and I worked in tobacco all summer to buy Buckmasters.  We both bought the black oxide coated ones.  A week later, he broke about an inch off the blade tip throwing it into a tree.  I was afraid to take mine out of the sheath in fear of losing it, besides to was horribly awkward, bulky and didn't cut well.  I bought another Buck hunting knife, the 105, to actually take in the woods and left the Buckmaster home in the box.  After college I listed the Buckmaster on eBay and somebody paid me what I remember to be about $300 for it.  I used some of the money to buy an Emerson CQC-7. I learned my lesson about taking Rambo's advice on cutlery.  My buddy didn't.  Last time I saw him he was running some giant survival blade on his vest.

I do remember my buddy tying para cord to it with the tines screwed in and throwing it across a rain swollen creek so we had something to hold on to as we crossed.  Probably the only time that function was used in the entire history of Buckmasters.
