View Quote Agreed. Click To View Spoiler Plus anyone who has followed Star Wars for the past 38 years (shit I feel old now) knows that what Lucas did with Star Wars in 1977 was highly derivative to begin with. I have a book I got when I was in grade school at a Book Fair (do they even have those anymore?) called The Star Wars Album that had entire sections comparing Star Wars to the older influences, everything from pulp, to Samurai movies, to Westerns, to Laurel and Hardy with a plethora of pictures showing how some scenes were almost direct shot for shot remakes/homages of earlier movies that influenced Lucas. Film critics gushed about Quentin Tarantino throwing all his influences up on the screen at once, Lucas did it while Tarantino was in Junior High. Hell Lucas went way beyond just stylistic influences, go watch The Hidden Fortress sometime. So when people say it was "too much like the first Star Wars" I just smile and figure that's the way it should be. This was a Star Wars movie made by a Star Wars fan for Star Wars fans, again as it should be. Sure it'll introduce a whole new bunch of kids to Star Wars, which is good, but for people like me it was the Star Wars movie I've been waiting for since the end credits rolled on Return of the Jedi, and I think Abrams took that into consideration when he was making it. Kids will ooh and ahh at all the stuff going on, but they'll miss the significance of the light saber remote on the Falcon or the look on Chewie's face when the chess board lights up or the Mouse droids on the Star Destroyer or some of the Stormtrooper dialog,"We think they may be splitting up..." but little things like that are part of what made it feel right. To paraphrase Han, it was like coming home. Lucas thought too much when he made the prequels, not only about how to do a "proper" story but bought into the fact that he was George Lucas and can do no wrong. A George Lucas who was standing in Tunisia trying to film the first movie would have slapped the shit out of the George Lucas that made The Phantom Menace...and he would have totally grinned when he saw what Abrams did with this one. The real George Lucas, now, probably only grins at the royalty checks he's getting from it. In a way George Lucas is the real Anakin Skywalker, everything was good until he lost his way. And damn that was a lot longer than I intended, sorry, I can go on when it comes to Star Wars. I'm not even sure most of that is a spoiler, but hey better safe than sorry. |

I would have preferred that he were purely evil, not conflicted and self-doubting. So he was young? Click To View Spoiler IMHO, Kylo's attitude might have seemed vaguely similar to Anakin's, but they're entirely different. Anakin was arrogant and misguided, and turned to the Dark Side to save his wife.. Kylo, on the other hand, was obsessed with Vader, even down to wearing an unnecessary mask that changed his voice. He was also in constant internal turmoil because he knew that what he was doing was wrong, but also believed he was too weak to be a Jedi. The internal struggle, coupled with his youth and and impulsive behavior, is what gives him a passing resemblance to Hayden Christensen, but they're very different. And I think Driver can act circles around Christensen, FWIW. After killing Han, he might consider himself beyond redemption, which could make him more "purely" evil in the next episode. Or, who knows, he might flip a complete 180... all we know is that he probably won't be the same person as before. Besides, is Han REALLY dead? ETA: Click To View Spoiler I felt like the destruction of Coruscant-like planets, the Death Star lookalike getting blown up, the death of Han, etc were all a way of saying "Yes, here's your references to the Lucas films. These are getting destroyed, and we're now going our own way." |

Just got back from seeing it. I enjoyed it and was surprised that flip flop doopy doop even though I saw the spoiler from days ago. My daughter cried at that part.
Also, there was a comment either in this thread or another thread whom commented about how Finn and Rey (Ray?) could use a lightsaber without training. Han also used a saber and had no training to save Luke. Besides, you could see that neither Finn (especially Finn) had no clue how to use it. Rey (Ray?) even had trouble with it but she had training with the staff she used throughout the movie. Even Kylo stated that she lacked training. I saw a lot of Ralph Mcquarrie's influence in this movie. A lot of the droids from his sketches made it as well as some of the he aliens. I lived the trooper with the shield; the one that fought Finn. I have the figure that guy was based off of. |

Saw it last night and I'm still on the fence, but with good reason, since I had no idea what I was walking into. I did damn good avoiding any and all spoilers since, probably, the first reveal of the bad guys lightsaber. That was a LOT of work. I think I was expecting more "we're getting the band back together" which wasn't the main thrust of the movie, but it was good. Damn good, especially after episodes 1 - 3. Hearing vague reviews that it was better than those made me cautiously optimistic, like when you hear your craziest, freakiest, "first time you fell in love", ex just came back from rehab and wants to have dinner with you. That's when you get that hope that it's the intro to something amazing, starting fresh, but you've still got painful memories of the time she smashed a flower vase over your head during sex. I think I'm going to go see it again, maybe IMAX 3D for the full effect. |

Saw it last night.
Here's my take: It was fun and I felt like I was a kid again watching one of the Original Trilogy. As for the plot holes some people are bitching about, I'll hold my opinion on those until the next movie. It felt like a lot of it could be answered with a little exposition from Skywalker. |

The more I think about it... there are no prequels for me anymore. There are four Star Wars movies, and TFA is in the top 3.

Disney is going to fucking make bank off Star Wars. That buy-out will soon be laughed as a fucking bargain.
Something George Lucas dumbass failed to realize was that if he gave half a fucking effort for the Prequels, he'd be twice as rich as he is now. |

I give it a solid B. Overall, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next episode. There were a couple of annoyances.
What a cash cow this is going to be. |

Going to be the odd man out here; was disappointed
Seems movies these days with sequels accelerate relationship dynamics and overall made it feel unauthentic for a lack of a better word to sum up how I felt. I really wish they went back to the old way it was done instead of relying so much on CGI; makes the classics look so much better and real but then again this is Disney. Going to wait for the rest to hit dvd/cable |

I really like BB8. Some people were worried that he was an unnecessary character added to sell more toys but he's just as vital as R2D2.
I would describe him as reminiscent of R2 with a lot of Wall-E thrown in. One would expect that, after 30 years of scientific advancement, the droids would show more personality and BB8 doesn't disappoint. Everyone laughed out loud at the "thumbs up" moment he had with Fin.

I really liked it even though it does have some problems. There is hardly any character development, there are a couple of plot holes, the map being a huge one.
BB8 really struggled in getting you emotionally involved where R2-D2 never had that problem. I really liked Kylo, that dude just oozes evil. Easily the best character in whole show. |

We're going to do some spoiler/pre-discussion on the darker themes but plan to take them. My wife isn't a Star Wars fan, and she LOVED the movie. I give it high marks, especially since many of us as grown-ups will compare it to the original trilogy we saw in the theater as kids and expect the same childlike magic. I like the fact that it wasn't a squeaky clean CGI world, unlike the prequels where even the slums looked sanitized. The Falcon looks like you need a tetanus shot if you bump into it, and that's the way it should be IMHO. |

Great movie. Not even in the same league as 1-3 fucking garbage.
For non-spoiler stuff, I LOVE that they used practical effects so much. This isnt a spoiler: during the "pig scene" my 1st thought was GD it, why use CGI? That was when it was further away. But then when Fin got closer I realized it was real and thought "fucking aweseome." that big ole thing was actually there. Everything was real, everything was solid. |
