According to the Post Mistress, our shirts arrived the 26th, but we got 'em this morning as we were at Fiesta in San Antonio.
They look great Guns!

Update 4/29 continued

Shirts arrived!   Most of the students already stopped by to pick theirs up.   Several of them are already wearing them.

Crew member is closer to done. They are working on highlights on the uniform edges right now.

More detail painting on the mini White House.  She's working on getting a system down.  She's not happy about all the others that now need done.

More painting on the power cord.  I saw a motor for our door being set up, and the electronics page getting closer to install.

More clouds to cover the cord.

Got the shirt today!

Power cord is looking awesome.   Would a light cream color work for the jump to the helo to hide it in the wall color?

Now that you mention power... Is anything actually using that power yet?  Did I miss something?

I'm told he will try testing the tail rotor wiring again tomorrow.  He was working tonight on printing a motor bracket for the sliding door.

So, to answer your question, no, no power yet, but I'm hoping by the end of the week, we might have lights and tail rotor.

I'll see about the cord jump.  Light may be the way to go.

Just sent off another letter to President Trump.

I thanked him for his wonderful letter to my students, and updated him on our progress, and told him about our latest t-shirts inspired by his letter.  If we get a response, I'll share.

Why not run it down the cables used to hang the helo?

Wow!

If you’re students don’t realize it now they will someday - exposure to this type of creative building & problem solving is a fantastic foundation for one’s future.

Having the opportunity to be part of a project, helicopter or otherwise, where young minds are challenged and encouraged to utilize their interests to build something like this... it’s absolutely fantastic.

Fifteen years out of high school, I still communicate regularly with a very short list of HS educators who fostered the creative problem solving in my young mind.

This is incredibly inspiring work!

Update 4/30

Clean up and little finishing details are happening today.  We are trying to get ready for our open house show tonight from 6-8pm.

This was a trial of a contoured trim across the windows.  It didn't want to stay put.

Using flat trim.  Works pretty dang well.   We still have the top and bottom trim to finish.

Students perfecting sleeves.

"Wall color white" going on over the end of the cord.   Taking the cord up the cables and over the ceiling and back down was going to be too big of a pain, and we already have it wired through the tail.

Both of this years shirts!    Wasn't even planned.  I looked up and there they were.

4/30 Update 2

We had some success with testing lights and the tail rotor, but ran into a little is sure with wiring for the tail rotor.  When we first put power to the rotor, we had nothing.  Immediately, we feared the worst, a separation of the wiring at the junction of the tail section and fuselage.  That would have been really bad, but it turned out to just be a broken solder joint at the motor unter the football.

Here are the lights being tested.  We may have to order some colored LED bulbs, these are pretty white, even with the colored lenses.

There was good success this afternoon getting s very simple 15 sec on, 15 sec off sequence going for the tail rotor.  We are going to let this run tonight at the open house.

Maybe we ought to firemission POTUS to do a speech for the graduation.
Again for Guns as teacher of the year.
Hey! It can't hurt to try.
Big kudos to Guns and all the students.
Great looking project.

One more update for tonight.

Just got home.

It was a fun evening of watching the kids show off their work.  They watched me give the speech a couple times, then they took over and I floated between projects answering questions thst students couldn't.

They did a great job.    Great bunch of kids again this year who really take pride in their work and sharing it with people.

People loved the Unicorns on the balcony of the White House.  There were many who stopped to take a picture of our Presidential letter.  It was fun to watch their reaction to seeing different parts of the display.

It's not quite as loud as the video makes it sound.  The mic is pretty sensitive.  Most of the night I could barely hear it when it came on.

Eventually, there will be either Hail to the Chief, or Ride of the Valkyries playing to drown it out.

Yes you did, I just didn't expect the lights to be that bright.

I should have listened to you.  In my defense.....    I've only got one robotic student, and he's busy.  Students wanted to kill me tonight when I said we might have to exchange the bulbs.....so I may not make it to see it finished.

Cool!  What does it control or have the options for right now?

You could also get a LED current controller "dimmer" for each of your existing LEDs and put controller on the power line inside, but they'll still look washed out pastel  compared to native color emitters (green/red).

It controls everything connected to the Arduino.

He was able to turn off and on the rear rotor, as well as the lights earlier.   Everything will be controllable from my classroom desk top when he's finished.

On the lights, we pulled the lens covers and repainted the inside with thicker paint.   Hopefully it wasn't too much.

Would it be easier to put some green and red stage lighting filters inside the lenses?

I'm guessing the paint will make it dimmer, but still a bit pale.  Those are really intense bulbs.    If they're controlled by the Arduino, just tell robotics guy to run them PWM at 50% to cut their brightness down a bit, maybe even 30% duty cycle.   Will still have the pale to dark spot from white, but a red bulb would be cheap and easy to replace, only hard one is the green, and that's on the opposite side, so a dimmer dashboard mod type would be fine.

Update 5/1

Students finished up the touch up paint on the underside of the ceiling edge, and adding of a 3D cloud bank.  We also got the lenses painted with a thicker coat of paint on the inside, and remounted to the helo.  I didn't get a chance to see them tested yet.  Hopefully it looks better than before.

The white strip across the bottom of the windows is a stencil we are working on.  It will cover the edge of the windows and hopefully streamline the edge a bit.  It's very difficult to get exactly the right angles, with the same thickness all the way through.....and have a perfect straight edge.

We think we are close and will make one out of drawing board soon.

The mini White House is getting closer to done.

A second painter has volunteered to help put with the mini memorials.

Power cord to helo was well painted.  I only saw it looking for it.  It didn't jump out like "what's that bit?" before.    It's looking awesome.

Why are the mini monuments blue?  You really need to check your camera's white balance.

We are going for a dusk look on them.  They look way out of place when just white, under the trees.  They will all have similar colors to our larger 1/24th scale White House.

Hopefully I can get some shots of them under the trees soon.

Update 5/2

Students worked to get more details done on the pilots.  We are finally getting closer to having them done.  Well, at least it feels like it.

We also worked on an information fold out that we can put out during future events.    This shows images from the entire process and shares info on how this all happened.

Finishing touches on the mini White House.

What we are going for.......

How do you get colored pencils to stick to plastic?  Or are those for a different purpose?  Watercolor pencils ground up for makeshift paint?

Also, put his head in a rubber jaw hobby vise, if her blade slips, blood will get in his hair.

He's using drawing board, so the pencil works pretty well.

It's about the 4th attempt at this all using different mediums.   This seems to be the best method so far.   We can probably clear it for a little glossy look to it when he's finished.

Update 5/3

We are running out of time!!!!!

Good news is we can see the light at end of the tunnel.....hopefully it won't be something about to run us over.

Pilot has hair again.

We are a bit lucky in that the cockpit windows are pretty blurred with the iridescent paint.

I chuckled a bit watching this, as it was like watching a tailor.   The student didn't think it was funny.

We got the windows and trim removed again in preparation for installing the pilots.   Maybe early next week.  We are still struggling a bit with the curved trim to cover the top and bottom. I've seen the bottom piece close to finished, but the top isn't where I'd like it to be and we may adjust next week and attempt a different method of drawing it out.

The lights were tested again today, and he's starting to get things wired up to the Arduino.   I didn't see them running in a program yet.   The extra paint on the inside of the lens covers seems to have done a decent job.   They look much better.   The camera makes them a bit brighter in the center than they look in real life.

The organized chaos of getting everything connected.

For a “wing wiper” the hair is good to go! I believe the sleeves are a little long, maybe cut them another 1/4”?
Other than that everything looks to be falling in place!
Oh, don’t add any gloss to the hair, it would look fake!

Pilot's hair as stunning!  From the photo, it looks like it was molded that way and not modified.  Even trying to be picky on the hair, I can't see an issue, my eye keeps running to the poor guys jugular that needs a band aid.

The lens looks amazing, looks like a green LED is actually in it.   Spectacular outcome.

I hope the solderless breadboard isn't the permanent mount if it's carrying current/power for lights/motor, resistance of the contacts does climb over time and it'll melt.  I've melted a few of them with too much current.    Breadboards are only rated for 500mA and 2.5W total dissipation (125 mA @ 13.8V aka 12V).

If soldering isn't desired, a screw terminal strip can be used to connect wires together, how cars were wired back in the old days.

There is a lot of clean up that he'll do.

I forgot to add these last night.  I took these as it was still hanging in the plotter.

CAD is working to get us a presentation display of their work from the original drawing.  We will hopefully frame this and hang it under the trees.

If you look closely, you can see the kids work, overlapping the original.  It has all the individual bulkhead ribs, spine, and orientation points on the outside.
