Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is releasing red lava into a residential subdivision, prompting the county to order mandatory evacuations. Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder said Thursday red lava emerged on Mohala Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision. The county is ordering evacuations for homes from Luana Street to Pohohiki Road. The eruption comes after days of earthquakes rocked the Puna district of the Big Island. Earlier in the week, the crater floor of the Puu Oo (POO'-oo OH'-oh) vent collapsed. That caused magma to push more than 10 miles downslope toward the populated southeast coastline of the island. Does homeowners insurance cover lava eruptions, or is there a special insurance for molten rock?

That is exactly where we are going in about 6 weeks.
Not sure how bad this can get. We did buy travel insurance. |

My daughter was at Volcano Nat Park yesterday afternoon and just got home this afternoon. I texted her and told her I'm glad she's home safe in the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

I was in CA for a 5.6. It hit while I was cooking dinner. I kept cooking dinner. Things rattled, but nothing fell. 5.0 is not a big deal.

That rift zone zone stretches down into what looks like a fairly developed area judging by the number of roads... I'm just waiting to see if the magma breaks through somewhere besides the current vent. |

Figures that she's a blowing now. I was there in December and nothing was happening, not even the typical flows into the ocean.
That neighborhood is 9 miles from the location that typically flows into the ocean all the time. It's a risk that's really unavoidable unless you live on the extreme north end of the island but no place is safe. That neighborhood however is on the risky side of locations in my book. No God damn way I would write mortgage loans for the area is I owned a bank. Insurance for such events is a slippery slope  . Coverage would depend on you type of loss from the event. Worst case would be molten rock flowing through your front door but also the least likely. Standard home policy would cover the more likely damages such as fire, smoke or falling debris without issue. For any kind of earth movement you would need earthquake coverage.

I was trying to figure out where the fissure is and not finding any maps with the lava's location overlayed on them.
So I've been looking at news coverage from the air and the ground and drone videos and have come up with several estimates... I think this is my most accurate estimate so far.  This is one of my earlier estimates but with a wider view of the surrounding streets:

That said, it's ~9-10 miles NW from Leilani Estates. Kinda wondering if the ex-in laws sold their house in HA or not. I've thought about moving back more than once to be honest. |

A poster above mentioned a 5.0 earthquake not being a big deal, and he's both right, and wrong. A 4.8 ish earthquake was one of the most destructive to me years ago, because of the type, and how close I was to the epicenter. Everything was thrown off my shelves, glass everywhere, and power was out for almost a day for a large part of my city. This was back in my college days, so it wasn't a nice city, it was a very scary one.
I can "surf" through 5.0's if they are further away and it's no big deal. I've lived through many earthquakes here. you generally freeze for a moment, then realize it's an earthquake. then the "how bad is this one going to be" phase, getting to a doorway, and calling your kids to do the same. Afterwards, usually a few hours of aftershocks, again...assess how bad and ride the wave. |

That appears to be originating in a crack in the residential area! Am I wrong? I know jack and shit about the topic, but I'd prefer to live in an area where the ground doesn't suddenly split open and spew forth hell. |
