In the next 2-5 hours a lava flow could cross the coast road 137.

We used to go to Maui once a year with the family.  I always wished we’d get everyone to go to the big Island once.  I Went 17 years ago and toured the volcano.  It’s awesome!!

I’d go to see this set of eruptions tomorrow If I could.

I can only hope something like that happens again and is filmed in HD...

A few thoughts on the live stream: FO Rooster is back. The sounds are awesome. I want to see a time lapse of the cinder cone forming.

I would see about getting it reappraised in that case if the law permits doing that for tax purposes. I'll bet that land will be worth tens of dollars per acre after that, if anyone's willing to buy it at all.

When the lava meets the sea and new land is formed, the new acreage belongs to the state - even if you legal description was from points inland "to the high water line" or whatever. They will estimate the old high water mark and your formerly beach front property is now lava front property.

There are 2 reasons I'd want to visit Hawaii.  The volcano and the telescopes.

The telescopes aren't really open to the public as I understand it... so I'd need an insider... or be going to work there...  But the volcano... That's public whether you want it to be or not.

They're both on the big island... I can't think of anything on the other islands I'd want to see.

Laze (Lave Haze)

Laze is a hydrochloric acid mist formed by the action of lava on seawater.
Extreme heat from lava entering the sea rapidly boils and vaporizes seawater, leading to a series of chemical reactions.
The boiling and reactions produce a large white plume, locally known as lava haze or laze, which contains a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and concentrated seawater.

Key seawater chloride breakdown reactions that produce HCl gas:

MgCl2 (sea salt) + H2O (steam) = MgO (periclase) + 2HCl (HCl gas)
2 NaCl (sea salt) + H2O (steam) = Na2O (sodium oxide) + 2 HCL (HCl gas)
CaCl2 (sea salt) + H2O (steam) = CaO (lime) + 2 HCL (HCl gas)

We were on da big island a few years ago when the lava was flowing right near a road.   We got there early in the AM before the security guards showed up for the day.   They were keeping folks from walking out near the flows but once you were out there like we were they didn't say shit.

Lava flowing across the ground is THE COOLEST thing I've ever seen in my 51 years on the planet.   Find a way to get out there and see it live.

Good news.

http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts

This is a Civil Defense Message for Saturday, May 19 at 6:00 in the evening.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor active flows which have joined together into one flow. The flow is currently in state forest reserve lands and heading in the general direction of MacKenzie State Park.  No structures are threatened at this time. Residents should be aware that the lava flow is currently about half a mile from Highway 137 and, at the current rate, may cross the highway within the next five to six hours.

Should the lava enter the ocean be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume.

Yeah, I went down into a pumicite mine last year and it was emphasized before we went in to do some explorin' that we wanted a mask because volcanic glass in your lungs is bad news. You can get white lung disease from that stuff.

a bit of bad news.

This is a Civil Defense Message for Saturday, May 19 at 6:30 in the evening.

Active lava flows have caused brush fires to spread from the flow front toward Kamaili Road. Residents on Kamaili Road need to evacuate the area immediately.

County and state fire units are in the area, going door-to-door to make sure people are informed and check if they need assistance. Everyone needs to stay clear of this area.

just seeing this alert.

http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts

This is a Civil Defense Message for Saturday, May 19 at 9:00 in the evening.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor active flows.  The flow originating from fissure 20 has again split into two lobes, both are currently heading in the general direction of the 13 mile marker on Highway 137.  Flow front #1 is approximately 630 meters from Highway 137 and moving about a 100 meters per hour.  Flow front #2 is approximately 750 meters from Highway 137 and moving about the same speed.  At the current rate, the lava flow may cross the highway within the next five to seven hours.

Highway 137 is closed between Kamaili Road and Pohoiki Road.  Kamaili Road is closed between Highway 130 and Highway 137 due to a brush fire.  Residents in the area have been evacuated.

so that's as of an hour ago.  could be crossing now.

I've heard that the highway is cut, the lava has reached the ocean, the NG is telling everyone to GTFO now, and there's traffic jams with people trying to escape.  Not sure how much of that is true, though.  Supposedly Hawaii Civil Defence is having a live broadcast somewhere.

137 is cut.  The lava has reached the ocean.

Kamaiki rd was evacuated due to wild fire ignited by the lava flow threatening it.

With only 1 road out... 130 which has huge cracks in it covered by steel plates that they're having to monitor to make sure they don't get too hot... Yeah... I'd expect there was or is some traffic.

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html

Magma continues to be supplied to the lower East Rift Zone; however, a GPS instrument near the Lower East Rift Zone is no longer moving suggesting that the rift zone is no longer inflating in this area. Elevated earthquake activity continues, but earthquake locations have not moved farther downrift in the past couple of days.

----

So amateur geologist hat me...  The ground isn't inflating... it also isn't deflating... and the flow into the area isn't causing more movement...  So I'm taking this to mean Flow Out is equaling Flow In.

In other words the current surface vents are allowing enough flow out so the pressure under ground isn't increasing with the addition of new lava.  The flow in isn't stopping or else we'd see deflation.  It's like you're filling a balloon and a small hole developed in it that is letting air out such that it exactly matches the air you're pumping into it... so the balloon is no longer changing size.
