Any geologists, why is fresh lava always black, when igneous rock of any significant age spans the range of colors? I'm assuming it is, because I've never seen any that wasn't. Are there lava deposits that are other than black or very dark gray when they cool somewhere?

Do we even plan for amphibious landings on a large scale? Could we even for real if we even did? Do we even have the landing craft? Cirrously. It seems like a non starter. And if we don't and couldn't, then what are the amtraks for?

Most of the rocks that are colored are sedimentary... or were baked and compressed as in Metamorphic rock.
rocks, metals... most solids really have a crystal structure. This structure can be changed by how fast you cool it and can result in different mechanical properties as well as visual changes. And then there's the chemical make up of the substance to consider. Basalt type lavas have different chemical make ups to say... Andesite. I'm not a geologist but the field does interest me. I gave serious consideration to going to Hawaii for college specifically for geology... I instead went elsewhere for aerospace engineering. |

The easternmost is east of Pohoiki Road and is moving about 230 yards per hour. The westernmost of the lobes is near Malamaki Road and is moving at about 40 yards per hour. These rates may change with time and USGS crews are in the area to monitor flow advance. Other fissures remain weakly active and volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind. Smoke from burning vegetation as lava flows advance is also contributing to poor air quality. |

That makes sense. It's black iron (II) because it's hot and slowly oxidizes to reddish iron (III) oxide.

What part of 'Volcano' do they not understand?
It is a major part of the whole island. All the way to the sea floor. It is also well known to be a very active volcano. Though most commonly in the caldera and identified paths to the ocean. Lave tends to run downhill. I did get to see some very tall lava fountains many years ago. From the ground and air. It was spectacular. Many hundreds of feet high. |
