much less drama on the radio tonight.  I guess everyone actually listened to the evac order this time...

Thermal Lava map just released.

Crazy stuff.  What a huge reminder that we are on a planet in outer space.

The lava flows coverage out there is pretty intense.  Been watching some videos on FB of the people leaving their places for the last time with lava feet from their houses and shops.

Ive also noticed there seems to be a lot more steam coming up around the crater from the caldera floor than there was before along with the volume coming out of the vent has been increasing.  I think there is going to be a bigger collapse at some point.

Been watching it quite a lot.   Not seen so much of the FB feeds though.

This has to be one of the most interesting threads I've read on ARFCOM from an information perspective.  The incredible power of the earth and the scale of the energy we are dealing with on our planet is rarely seen in such vivid beauty and without huge loss of life.

I know people are losing their homes and that is truly dreadful to contemplate. Our thoughts are with them.  I hope they continue to remain safe.

If I understand the orientation of everything, this should not affect the Civil Beat guys yet even though they are off of (below) Hwy 132, correct?

depends.  If it follows the path of steepest decent... While it won't threaten them directly... after it crosses 132 it would continue to travel, eventually cutting Government Beach Road.(near Hawaiian Beaches)  This would cut off the whole Eastern section of the island from supplies.  So Civil Beat would need to evacuated before that happens... along with (guessing) about 10-20 thousand other people.

Also 132 is closed between lava tree and 4 corners... so If they left they would not be able to return at the present time.

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html

Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Fissure 8 reactivated yesterday afternoon and, overnight, was fountaining to heights of 200 feet at times and feeding a lava flow that was traveling to the northeast. That flow was moving atop the Fissure 8 flow that was active the previous night, passing on to open ground and crossing Pohoiki road at about 5 AM HST. As of 7 AM Tuesday morning, lava is advancing along the north margin of an earlier lava flow from Fissure 7 toward the PGV access road.

Visual observations early Tuesday morning also confirmed continued weak activity at Fissures 18, 19, and 20. Fissure 18 has produced channelized flows which have advanced about one-third of the way (1.2 mi) toward the coast.

Pele's hair and and other lightweight volcanic glass from high fountaining of Fissure 8 are being transported downwind and falling to the west of the fissure. On Monday night, there were reports of Pele's hair falling in Phoa. Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.

Looking South at PGV.  The Hill on the left is where the USGS webcam is located.

The Warehouse in the picture has since been destroyed.  Current report is lava has passed over that road and is running parallel to 132... the flanks of the flow spreading toward 132.

So, are they expecting to write off the facility, or what? I mean, is going to be totaled?

So far all that's been destroyed are storage out buildings... And maybe a little well infrastructure but the main building is pretty safe for the time being.  The wells that get covered can be dug out and should be fine to hook back up to.

I can't even imagine the cost + building that in HI. Everything has to come from thousands of miles away by triple or quadruple transhipment, truck-ship-truck.

Civil beat likely won't be streaming again for a little while... their power is out.  Which tells me the lava has taken out at least one side of 132 where the power lines run.  The Eastern portion of the island... Kapoho, Vacation land should also now be without power.

EVACUATION: Kapoho, Vacationland Due To Lava (May 30, 2018)
Link Posted: 5/30/2018 1:24:36 PM EDT
[#36]
May 30th 2:54 a.m. (5:54am Pacific)

Hawaii Volcano Observatory reports that the lava flow near Highway 132 has gained speed and is now advancing rapidly.  Due to this advance in speed, residents in the Kapoho area including Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland are advised to evacuate.  You are at risk of being isolated due to possible lava inundation of Beach Road near Four Corners.  At the present rate of flow, it is possible that Beach Road near Four Corners may be blocked within 4 to 6 hours.

So now... to 2 hours from now.

PGV is mostly fine.  Lava hasn't progressed much further in the well areas.  No pressure spikes or gas releases.  Their main access road and storage area got completely taken out.

The lava swerved to the East and went along 132 for a ways and finally turned North at Noni Farms road.  It's now on a different path of steepest decent that could take it right through the center of Kapoho (VacationLand)
