Now they are threatening to arrest anyone refusing to evacuate. Why anyone would still be there is a mystery to me, but apparently there are some stubborn folks about.
What is wrong with simply letting them take their chances where they are? They know the risk and have accepted the challenge. Leave them alone.
This is HI, bro.  Home of the nanny-state.
Eh, I wouldn’t consider that bad of a nanny state thing. They are avoiding having to put rescue personnel in danger later down the line when the people inevitably realize they are fucked. No crew is going to sit back and let them die because “thy knew the risks”

I guess compared to NY, you're right

I certainly follow what you mean.  Sucky situation all around.

It looks like Scott from Apua Hawaii tours has decided that he's going to suspend his videos, largely due to the fact that all of the areas are now cordoned off.

Didn't see this posted. It's from yesterday but gives a good overview of the expansion through yesterday at noon.

Based on the pics, it's now completely around the crater and taking out homes to the southeast.

It's a bit hard to see but this is the one pic I've found that shows the lake in contact with the lava.  It just snaked around the side of crater wall to get to it with a thin finger of a flow.  It was taken at 1:30pm Hawaii time.  4:30pm Pacific.

By now(10pm Hawaii time) the 400 foot deep lake is certainly dried up and filled by lava.  Probably has been for a few hours.  When the plume stopped ... that likely was when the water was no more.

The lake is 400 years old, not 400 ft deep.

This article says it's up to 200 ft in some spots.

One of the aspects of this that amuses me is the houses and structures built on old lava flows being threatened by new lava flows.

Very few places in this country (that people want to live in) that aren't susceptible to some kind of natural disaster.

The place that is getting wiped out looked like paradise. I can see why people took the risk and built there.

This image link changes every time the cam updates so when you refresh or check this thread later it will probably look different.

Didn't even feel it.

Looks like the lava's path is heading straight for all of those houses and to the sea. The amount of material from the fissures just astounds me. I wonder how far it has advanced since that picture was taken?

You have to be a moron to invest in a house that was built on a less than hundred year old local flow and think it’s a good idea

In a very active zone no less

I took this pic in December of 1982, a little over a week before Kilauea blew. We were on vacation in Hawaii and went to Volcano National Park, stood on the edge of Kilauea. They told us it was swollen 9 feet and ready to blow.  Thought I'd share.

4 hours to cover about 700 feet... so just under 3 feet a minute.  So not exactly speedy... But the flow had been barely moving for a little while...

I think the A'a flows generally work like that... move, pause, pool up, outside cools a bit, The pooling becomes too much to contain and it breaks through the crust it had formed... repeat.

Last time I was there I marveled at the flows across some of the roads and how they routed the road around it where they could instead of cutting through the lava in that same general area. There was a small flow into the ocean then that had been going on for many years, it was a bit farther south though. There were some night tours to the area but we didn't go due to the weather. That was in 2001 I believe.
