The cattle mural is coming along very nicely.  I've told her she needs to be a 3-4 cow painter a day if we are going to get this done before the end of the year.

More detail clean up.   We will try to fix small problems like this as we get deeper into the fine details.

Math can get complex for an Art teacher, but these boys are using Redneck measuring, then real math to make sure their caluculated distances are correct for our 45 degree angle and the total length of the board.

One of these boys is pretty excelled in the Math area, and was tickled to know the proper formula and vocabulary to get this distance using what he had learned in Math class.

This is the housing for our fan for the train whistle.  He's got quite the plan for this little contraption.  I just got back from picking up rubber hose to transition to the copper pipes for his three notes.

I don't think the school board will approve cloning students. There was a movie something like that and it didn't turn out well.

To make our bridge line up correctly, we have to adjust the angle of the bridge coming out of the tunnel 10 degrees.    We figured this out by stretching a line between the pillars, and lining up a speed square.

Corrected angle.

I believe Army, 15D?,  Aircraft mechanic?   He's very talented at mechanical stuff, and loves tinkering with things like this whistle.  He's into working and building his own vehicles.  He's currently building up an old 1st Gen 4 Runner.   He's also an excellent welder.

Great kid all around.  Had some unexpected things come up in life and he's made adult decisions exceptionally well.   We should all be so lucky to have kids like this.

Have you tested the blower fan for use in a hose?   I'm wondering about the static pressure, if it needs the intake open in order to move enough air, when they are trying to both "push" and "pull/suck" the air throughput goes way down.

Second:  Can she make a 2-3 cow stencils to use with an airbrush to increase "birth rate"?
View Quote
We are being careful with the intake.  There should be no obstructions.

I'm waiting for my experts to play with the motor and get it working for us.  My son says we can blow it up pretty quick without the proper power source.

I wonder how hard it would be to get a CO2 cylinder and actuating valves to simulate steam chuffing out of the stack and chests? Maybe direct some into your whistle air flow also for a little effect?

Probably more $$$ and time than it's worth, but it would be neat!

ETA, see if the janitor can sneek an extinguisher or two from the lab or electrical room!
Link Posted: 2/1/2018 8:22:00 PM EST
[#32]
The way they do this on models is to add a magnetic reed switch, or you could use an optical sensor in conjunction with an Arduino, on one of the axles. And then that powers a fan that synchronizes the chuffing with the wheel rotation.

The only two realistic ways to make simulated steam are to use a fog machine, or a model smoke machine which has a small heating element that vaporizes oil.  The oil smoke machines are very low current devices used in model trains. Neither of these are very good Solutions as they require access to them to refill them with smoke supplies.

Ok, those are Very Variable speed and need a BLDC motor controller (DC to 3 phase, variable frequency) to spin them.   Same motors as used on quadcopters and such to vary speed, but they are quite powerful.  The blade design determines static pressure, but if you spin it fast enough (using the controller), it should work anyway.  Just connecting it to DC would burn out one of the phases.

That's what Top_Men said too.

I haven't bought the controller yet.

Update 2/2

Electrical conduit is being set up for the head light and whistle.

And some major work with the rocks today.  We hung them up to mark their position for our painter.  They are not done yet, just there for location work.

We found three more smaller rocks that were never used and unfinished.  We will use them for this display.

Update 2/6

Work on the whistle and installing it continues.   We also have good progress with our headlight trim and installation.

This will be our power for the light.  It will install into a surge protector type unit that allows us to turn it on and off with an arduino.

Our LED head light with out the lens cover installed.

Decorative trim going on the light box.

Ready for some paint.

We are now waiting for my welders to create a bracket to attach it to the front of the locomotive.   We want it simple, but with a little decorative creativity.

Our whistle needed a bit of rework.  After a temporary assembly, installation is not going to work the way we want, so we are adjusting the casing at the base a bit.  We also got a few hose clamps to secure the hose to the brass.  The larger ones will hopefully help us reduce the overall footprint of size.

By the end of today, we should have this up and installed.   We still don't have the fan working yet.

Update 2/7

Reworking the whistle to fit inside of the dome.

This was done to recenter the pipes for clearance.

Cutting through all the layers was more challenging than we thought it would be.  There were blocks of wood in between for stability.

Almost there, but still some problems.  The hose clamps will have to be installed after they are through the space.

Details keep getting added on.

Paint on the light.

Waiting for the bracket to be built.

The herd is growing.

Finally adding power and a chain to our wheels.      Video on it's way.......

The video of our wheels under power for the first time!

We had to max out the motor, as half power did not move anything.   This seems to be just about perfect.

Or easier, replace the chain sprocket with a belt drive (lawnmower parts?)?
