Airplane was just a ripoff of one of the worst films in the 70’s

Airport 1975

Sick little girl, nuns, bad puns.  It had it all.  Although seeing a 747 fly through the Wasatch mountain range was cool.  For as bad of a movie, it’s great fun if you’ve seen Airplane.

It wasn't a ripoff.  It was a parody.  And a massive amount of the material they parodied came from the 50s disaster movie Zero Hour.

70s coffee commercials were lame.

80s is where it's at. When Peter comes home I just feel like a snickers bar on a dashboard in Phoenix during June.

It was actually a parody of 'Zero Hour.'
Release date: November 13, 1957 (USA)

"Ted Stryker (Dana Andrews) has drifted through life unsuccessfully since he led a dreadful air attack in World War II.  When his wife, Ellen (Linda Darnell), and his son leave him, Ted hurries onto their plane, where he tries to convince Ellen that he has changed. Meanwhile, many of the people on the flight, including the pilot (Elroy Hirsch), fall ill with food poisoning. It's left up to Ted, with help from Captain Treleaven (Sterling Hayden) in air control, to safely land the plane."

They even used the propeller sounds from 'Zero Hour' every time the jet was shown.

Nope, it was a parody of Zero Hour!, a 1957 film from which large parts of the script were copied verbatim.  There's a youtube video comparing the various scenes that are virtually identical.

I’m going to suggest something rather controversial.  It’s a parody of multimedia movies, commercials, and other social ideas from the time.

I did, have seen Airplane about a million times and never realized that part was a parody of a coffee commercial.

Today I also learned, thanks to this thread that the arguing PA announcers were the ones for LAX and were a married couple.

I love easter eggs and nuanced stuff like this.
