Costcos nice for some things Walmart is for the wife and I better for most things. When the kids lived at home Costco was our store, but with two of us we just don’t need such huge quantities of everything.we do use a local small town grocery for meats.

I used to work near the Walmart at East Port Plaza. Hearing gunshots at night was not all that uncommon. In the last year that I worked there, within 3/4 of a mile of my office there were at least 4 shooting deaths that I actually heard the shots for, not sure how many just wounded. There's a plasma center on the other side of 82nd from that Walmart, a graveyard that's turned into a homeless camp, a weed shop, and a highschool right behind it. The shoplifting probably outweighs the sales.

I’ve been at one of those Walmart locations. All of the shopping carts are geofenced. Take one a certain distance outside of the store parking lot and a brake/boot is activated preventing the wheels from turning. Never seen anything like it.

i went with someone some 12 or more years ago to pick up something from a craigslist ad in portland. I kind think it was a bed or bunk bed for a buddies girlfriends kids. It was in Portland and when we got there they didnt have a tool to take the thing apart. I went with a guy who lived there in his car to a local walmart. It was like 9pm and dark out and holy hell was i shocked at what i saw there. There was a large group of people crowding the automated soda/pop can return machines to get money. All homeless and drug addicted, the type that you could tell from 50-75 yards away. This was back in the day when carried a keltec pf9. Shield wasnt out yet. Think ruger had a pf9 clone out. Think i was carrying illegally since it was impossible to get an out of state permit from oregon. It was the first time i really encountered a place like that. A true shithole i had no place in being.
I can only imagine what it looks like there these days. Im surprised there are any businesses left in Portland. The writing on the wall that there is no future there has been around for a long time. |

Wait!
So, being robbed blind on a daily basis ISN'T a sustainable Business Model? |

This is the start of retails retreat from high crime areas.
Once losses hit a certain percentage at a city store Walmart, CVS, Target, etc,etc will close those "under performing" stores. Then as expected the next group of stores further out will start to "under perform" and will be closed. Eventually you will shop like Service Merchandise or online. |

They lost too much money to theft... it's the only reason they close stores.

The first time I went to make Alton Brown's egg nog recipe, I'm standing in a liquor store with probably thousands of bottles of liquor on the shelves, and not a single bottle of cognac anywhere. Calvados, Ouzo, Fernet, all kinds of weird stuff but no cognac. I go up to the cashier to ask where it is, and lo and behold, all the cognac is behind the counter. |

I cannot wait until the first brave company says the REAL reason for the closing of stores in certain "highly diverse" locations. They keep the laundry soap in a room at the front of the store here at my Smiths, I also think diapers and something else. Pathetic.

The Walmart he went to was in delta Park(I think). Complete freak show. I used to work at fisherman's marine and supply in high school the place has gone seriously down hill it's hard to comprehend. I've been to the WM on NE Hayden Pkwy/Delta Park numerous times - it's the closet OR Walmart (no sales tax) to my parents house in Vancouver WA. That WM is a shit hole and the area around it is full on homeless encampment. Yep. Hayden Island is on the north edge of Portland, just before crossing the Columbia River into Washington. Mostly industrial area with a lot of freight terminals, semi truck service and parts shops, truck stop, etc. Massive homeless camps especially around the I-5 ramps. Across I-5 is the Expo Center where the gun shows are held. Up the freeway a half mile is the Delta Park malls and restaurants. The Lowes there is where a parking lot security guard shot and killed a homeless guy over nothing. Everyone knows the homeless are a protected class in Portland. He was an idiot confronting him and even more retarded shooting him in his car. But that is the NICER part of the area! I imagine theft, poop around the building, trashed restrooms, scaring off normal customers. Who in their right mind would shop there? I drove truck around the industrial areas and there are some really really bad homeless areas. Hayden is one. Just for reference, Martin Luther King Blvd runs through east side downtown up to where it intersects I-5 at Harden Island. Whole area has epic homeless camps with tents, tarps, burned out cars, decrepit RVs, campfires, etc. |
