Glad I found this thread!

Can anyone recommend a good semi-auto air rifle suitable for most small game? What FPS would be acceptable? Here's the stoopid question: would any air rifle be suitable for home defense in event of a firearms ban?

ETA - It look like this might do the trick... Marauder Air Rifle

If you don't mind buying an expensive external pump, buying a scuba tank, or paying to have it refilled, I'm sure it's fine.

For me it's a pain in the ass (I own such a gun I want to get rid of, due in large part to the hassle of it.)

Lewis and Clarke carried with them a compressed-air powered 30-something caliber rifle that could be fired many times a minute and was pretty advanced for its day. I know that there exist big-bore airguns for hunting game-- it wouldn't exactly be ideal, but you could do a hell of a lot worse than a .45 caliber bullet going 730 FPS.

Dunno anything about the quality of that site's prices or anything, but that's where I found the info.

There are a few semi auto repeating pellet rifles.  They are probably
all good, but cost $,$$$.  The maurader is a HUGE air rifle, but has
plenty of power, not sure what has happened to the Discovery and it's
derivation - but at least though it was built on a 2260 frame that was
much more normal sized.  CZ USA was importing a CZ pcp a couple years
ago that was very nice and compact, but only shot about 700fps (plenty
for what it was intended for).  I got 3 for my kids.
Edgun, FX and Evanix come to mind if budget be damned.
If you really want to empty your wallet - look at some of the pcp rapid
fire air pistols.  Think they start over 2k - but Olympic quality air
pistols are not cheep.
For feeding them, consider a pigmy tank and a shoebox compressor.

Sorry, though Edgun was semi - but all I am finding now is bolt action.

I've got an FX-2000, which is of course an older FX.  I've got the hand pump for it.  Those shoebox compressors are neat, but then you're looking to spend even more hundreds of dollars.  Just isn't worth it to me.

The only way I'd keep my FX-2000 is if I had one of those compressors, but I don't.  The handpumps are a major chore to use.  I figured out pretty fast why a 70 year old man sold it to me.

I have a sbca tank.  It is good for a bunch of thousands of shots through the CZ and 2 pcp pistols I have, then I pay $7 at the paintball store for a recharge.  That said, the SBCA tank went up $200 since I got mine, so now the Pigmy/shoebox is not much more expensive.

As it is, I think I get 6 months of serious target shooting per charge on the SBCA, so driving to the paintball store is not a big hassle.  It is just a tad large to carry arround - but at least it is not SCUBA - less usable air @ 2x size and weight.  I am an pcp neophite - with about $2.5k invested in my 5 guns and the sbca.

Well screw you guys and screw Amazon Prime.  I didn't *need* an air pistol, but now one is due to be delivered tomorrow.  Then I started looking at some of the higher end rifles and finding reasons to justify those.

The Crosman 1377 was my first gun, I had a first generation.  I even built a very nice mahogany box for it.  It disappeared long ago.  Anyone know where I might find an older 1377 gen1?

Very handy too. I've built two of them, one with the red-dot and one with a SKS scope.

I seldom even use my old air rifles any more as the 1377 Carbine is plenty enough powerful at 625 fps for yard vermin. I think you can upgrade the seals and get it up to 800 fps with the green air conversion.

So, uhh, does that count as an SBR?

It seems like a stupid question, however, I haven't ever put the ATF above regulating stupid things, such as air rifles.

I dont think they have stooped that low yet.... hell you can even get suppressors for them here in gasp... CA.

I had a 1377 in high school (graduated in 1990) and did a bunch of work on it.  It had a scope mount, VFG, light mounted, and a single point sling mount.  That gun put out many a street light or bird off a power line.  Miss that poor airgun.

That sounds pretty nice, then.  I didn't realize you could get thousands of shots out of those tanks.
SBCA tanks are filled to 4500psi rather than 3000/3500psi for SCUBA.  They have a little less total air in them, but much usable air.  (almost 44% the tank is usable, versus 33% before the pressure falls to far).

Target PCP guns like the CZ and most precision pistols sip very, very little air per shot (they shoot at lower velocities).  4 of my 5 pcp's get over 100 shots per charge.  Hunting PCP's can get fewer shots and have larger reservoirs.

Thanks a lot a-holes, there goes $85. Bought a kit with stock on Airgundepot.com. They show the 1322 model as out of stock but let me proceed with purchase. I had the .177 version as a kid and loved it. Hurricane damage ruined it and always wanted another. Hopefully the .22 will let me dispatch the family of rats that holds parades in my attic at night while I am trying to sleep. All I need now is some NV gear...

The only way I'd keep my FX-2000 is if I had one of those compressors, but I don't.  The handpumps are a major chore to use.  I figured out pretty fast why a 70 year old man sold it to me.

I have made hand pumping twice as fast plus eliminate the big problem with both the Shoebox and every hand pump- moisture.  The pump is now fed from a 3 gallon air tank with a pound of 4A molecular sieves that dry the air to a dew point under -40.  The compressed air pressure is reduced to 15 PSI to the pump.

Supercharging at a boost pressure of 15 PSI(g) doubles the flow yet requires about the same effort.  And no more condensate in the pump or rifle.

I charge the rifle when it drops to 2000 PSI, it takes me 30 strokes to bring it back to 3000 PSI.  The 3 gallon tank takes no time to fill from the shop/truck compressor.  I wait a few minutes after the compressor stops to charge, this lets the condensate settle which keeps the molecular sieve desiccant fresher.  I figure at current shooting rates, I will have to recharge it only once a year.  The molecular sieves are loose in the tank and pour like water as they are 2-3 mm in diameter.  Unlike silica gel which is recharged at 250 F, molecular sieves require 450 F because of the much stronger adsorbent power.

Yes, I still have a filter on the pump inlet.

My 1322 had every Mellon air upgrade, the chavka barrel band, don cothran safety. Steel breech, Williams sights. Pistol marauder ( 2 stage almost match) trigger. 14.5 barrel and a tko Suppressor. Actually have a spare haha. The trigger groups have alot of flash on them so I sanded mine down slick and alumahyde 2 them. Drilled out the valve for increased volume also.

It is nice but when you have to pump it 20-30 times for maximum power it gets a little old. I usually plink out back at 7 pumps

Get the flat top piston conversion (mine might be mellon - but I think I got the steel front pin from him rather than the flat top piston), it makes it easier and more efficient to pump.  It also does not max out at 7 strokes (lawyer design) like the stock one.  The stock one has some dead air space inside the seal.  The gun will compress the stroke into that dead air space - which will define the maximum pressure generated by the stroke.  Eliminating the dead air space removes the maximum pressure restriction (and allows you to put a ton more stress on the rest of the gun).  You should really replace the roller pin when you replace the piston, as the stock roller pin is the next weakest link and will bend fairly easily.  The next weakest link is the handle - but it can take a bit more than that pin can.  This is about a $25 upgrade and a really good one.

The steel breach is probably a $50 upgrade - but it is the next best thing to do.  It allows you to add a scope, a Williams sight or an lpa sight (if you get the right steel breach).  For maximum accuracy, reasearch the taco hold - it involves holding the pistol near your face like it is a rifle.  You can use a Williams peep sight or a rifle scope that way.  Much steadier than extended arms.

Don Cothran's roller trigger (which is a design he stole, but I waited 2 years and could not get one from the original inventor), is the best of the cheaper trigger upgrades.  The PRod trigger is better - but not sure about how it fits or costs (I do not have mine on a 1377, but a pcp crosman).  I also have another that is better than the roller trigger, but cost 2x as much.

I did a little valve work, but not much.  I would not have done the valve work, but my valve was giving me problems so I needed to open it up and clean it.  I really do not recall if I changed the valve spring or not.

Cheaper and easier to start with a Custom Shop one than to do the build from scratch, but not as much fun.  Think my custom furniture was from rb grips.  But that is just pimping.
----------------
2240
Seriiously consider getting 2240 over the 1377.  The co2 version is more fun to shoot (abet quite loud).  It uses almost all the same parts - only replacing the pump and piston with a co2 cartridge.  Some have modified it for bulk fill.

My p rod trigger was 25 or 35 from crosman, and you have modify or buy the $12 Mellon air hammer. Well worth it, the stock trigger is terrible and many spend much more than that to modify the stock trigger, and end up with less money and less trigger.

These guns are addicting. I wish I never found them haha. Also add crosman to your Facebook, they have 20 % off Tuesdays some times. That's how I bought my steel breach.

I got my $69.00 Wally World "Doomsday Bug Out Kit" in and my steel breech arrived from Crosman the next day. I alreay knew it had a 12" barrel instead of the pictured 14". Hell even the box pictured a 14" carbine. That said I prefer the 12". Rifles I have.

As for the kit other than the Backpacker Carbine (2289G) and pellets the rest of the stuff was not much of a much. Meh I can always use the little first aid kit and there is plenty of room to fill it out.

I opted to drill the stock and attach it with two 6-32 screws instead of keeping the quick release feature. I also put a few wraps of vet tape in the grip and comb area. Believe it or not it makes a big difference.

I installed the steel breech and topped it with a old 2.5 X 28 Chi-Com SKS scope in high rings. I could have used med rings but the high ones give me a bit more room for my fat fingers to load it. The comb is plenty high anyway.

I lasered it in at 15 yards and after tweaking it a bit I did not have any trouble keeping all my shots inside a 1" shoot-n-see circle. All shots were with 10 pumps. The forend worked pretty darn good with no pinching issues. I killed a couple Starlings out in the yard with no trouble so It will serve for a back yard critter-getter.

LOL...It sorta has that "Man from U.N.C.L.E." look about it.

Kit as it came out of the box.
