Man those were the days... climbing on to a DC10 or an L1011 widebody tristar....plenty of leg room, cute and friendly flight attendants. Damn...
You people not old enough to know wtf im talking about... Lol. Good luck. The shit is still being hauled up to the global fans. Get ready. |

The Tristar was specifically the -1011.
If not for the Concorde, perhaps the most technologically forward leaning aircraft of its day. |

Yeah, the Lockheed was the tri star but the DC 10 had a third engine so ive lumped it into that nomenclature. But you know "the thing" lol |

I flew on several MD-11s flown by World Airlines on charter "rotator" flights. I never flew on an L-1011, but did see a few when I was a kid.
|
|
I flew on both the L1011 and DC-10 as a kid. The couple times I flew on the 747 as a kid was really cool..." it has an upstairs!!!" Good times

Flew on both World Airways DC-10, and TWA L-1011.
L-1011 had no legroom unless I asked for a bulkhead or emergency exit. I remember fondly the burning smell and clouds of smoke on engine start in the L-1011 lol. |
|
|
I got to fly on an L-1011 from Minneapolis to Orlando and back. I was 10, so I couldn't really appreciate the space inside.
|
|
The first time I entered a L 1011, I saw the giant repair straps just forward of the door.
Who can name the other US made three engine jet of the same era? |
|
Took one to my the UK for my first duty station back in the day.

sure. I did a bunch of turnarounds with my dad flying Delta as a kid..based out of MIA until they moved to ATL.
Those engines had a great low growl/hum other three engined planes: DC-10, 727? |

Yeah, the Lockheed was the tri star but the DC 10 had a third engine so ive lumped it into that nomenclature. But you know "the thing" lol They both had three engines and legroom, but that’s where comparisons between the L-1011 and DC-10 pretty much stop. The 1011 was ahead of its time in many regards. If I recall correctly the airframe was designed to withstand 100,000 flight hours, and at the time of its rollout the 1011 had certain technology that wouldn’t be standard on other airliners for another decade. E.g., I believe it was the first airliner with the ability to land itself. Unfortunately the L-1011 suffered the same fate as the BetaMax and Apple computers: even though it was a superior product to its market competition, it ultimately didn’t win out in the marketplace. The L-1011 is what ultimately took Lockheed out of the commercial airplane business. Which is unfortunate since, up to that time, Lockheed had been one of the better innovators in commercial aircraft. A good video on the L-1011: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dAjezUfdBXE |

I had the displeasure of sitting in the front row of the middle section of a DC-10 from LAX to Japan.
There was NO leg room, and I got sick from the in-flight meal. I did NOT enjoy that flight. |

I wish I could’ve flown on a Connie,Convair 880/990,Caravelle

Grew up on the L-1011.
Old man started with TWA in 67. My favorite is still the 707. Anyone been on the rear stairs of a 727? |

I've posted before, but my dad worked in the L-1011 program for Lockheed from almost it's inception in Burbank right up until the end when they finally moved the program to Greenville, SC.
Had plenty of cool experiences around them but to see my dad given the opportunity to take the last Delta flight from ATL to LAX and then to Victorville was my favorite. Him and I got to sign the left side engine at the farewall party at Hartsfield the night before the ATL - LAX flight. Not sure if our sharpie markings have burned off by now |

I flew on a DC 10 once. Big ass fucking plane.
I think it was three seats on each side, with 6 in the middle. Two aisles.... it was huge. |
|
The Vickers Viscount sounded cool, but the Lockheed Electra for some reason with the droning engines made me air sick.
Capitol airlines & American all I remember. Maybe I go back too far working for Flying Tiger Airlines. |

I rode an l-1011 charter to Iraq, back in 2004. Longest flight of my life.
It still had nicotine stains from smokers. |

View Quote It was shitting titanium in the compressor disk A hard alpha inclusion, from when the ore was was reduced to pure titanium Wasn’t caught in all the subsequent inspection steps Many things in titanium manufacturing changed for rotating parts as a result of Sioux city There were some design flaws in the DC-10 that made that accident more probable, but the root cause lie with the titanium manufacturing |

Best flight I was ever on was in a DC10.
They were deadheading the plane back to where I was headed and I was in the airport waiting for my flight in 4 hours. I was at the gate and they asked if I would take that plane. Minimal crew, no real services, I said hell yeah. There were ten of us on that flight, and two crews. When they took off they must have kicked in the afterburners because that was the shortest take off roll and steepest climb I had ever experienced. I could feel Gs for the first time on a commercial flight. They opened the cockpit door and we mingled with everybody for 4 hours. It was fun and carefree and it makes me miss the old days of flight, before 9/11. |

L1011 guy here. Beautiful airplane way ahead of its time.
Sucker would do a Cat3 autoland with a 30knot crosswind. I liked it better than the 74. |

View Quote How do you tell if the crash was a DC-10 or an MD-11? If its upright, its a DC-10; if its flipped over, its a MD-11. The gear were so still on the MD-11 they would flip over and burn when they crashed. Of course they didn't build many of them and most of them crashed. The L-1011 was a fine aircraft ruined by its horrible RR RB engines. It almost bankrupted both companies. |
