I thought the L-1011 was the better looking jet.

The RB 211s would smoke the entire ramp on a cold day.  We loved the L10 at TWA.  Many found memories.

They look so chubby and cute.

Something that bugs me about airliners these days. Most of the jets look pretty much the same.

Spent plenty of time in DC10s growing up. We were non revenue so we almost always rode first class because that was where there was room.
747s were what I liked best though. Not DC10 related but the non rev thing had its drawbacks ,I can recall several times having to wait for cargo to be loaded to see if there was room for us. Beer and fish fly before non paying passengers.

I worked with the son of the Pilot (Finch) who was deadheading from Denver back home to Chicago.  He is the one who was steering with the throttles.  Don’t know how anyone walked from that.

I still think the DC10 is the best looking commercial plane since the Connie especially in KLM or Braniff colors.  Lucky enough to fly and land safely on them numerous times when I was a kid

I flew a L1011 to Europe when I was a child, neat plan, all planes were neat... I remember when you could go up and shoot the shit with the pilots if you were a kid or waiting to use the lav on a smaller plane. It was called a cockpit back then and there were stews.

Best flight I was ever on was in a DC10.

They were deadheading the plane back to where I was headed and I was in the airport waiting for my flight in 4 hours.

I was at the gate and they asked if I would take that plane.  Minimal crew, no real services, I said hell yeah.

There were ten of us on that flight, and two crews.

When they took off they must have kicked in the afterburners because that was the shortest take off roll and steepest climb I had ever experienced.  I could feel Gs for the first time on a commercial flight.

They opened the cockpit door and we mingled with everybody for 4 hours.

It was fun and carefree and it makes me miss the old days of flight, before 9/11.

I got that opportunity once on a 747 from LAX to Dulles. I missed my flight and the only thing they had going directly into Dulles was a 747 that was part of an equipment change. I was told there would be no service but that was OK. When the plane took off there were only a handful of true passengers plus some flight crew who were deadheading. For the sake of efficiency, the Steward moved everybody up to First Class. There was no food service but there was a drink cart with a  liquor tray that already had the seal broken so the Steward said he didn’t have to account for it. There were only a few of us drinking so there was plenty. It was nice to sit back in the big comfy seats, drinking and looking out at the blackness of the night. People talked to each other and told stories.

The L-1011 never had a crash that was a result of a mechanical failure. All of them were pilot/crew error.

Nice try.

How do you tell if the crash was a DC-10 or an MD-11? If its upright, its a DC-10; if its flipped over, its a MD-11. The gear were so still on the MD-11 they would flip over and burn when they crashed. Of course they didn't build many of them and most of them crashed.

The L-1011 was a fine aircraft ruined by its horrible RR RB engines. It almost bankrupted both companies.

Stiff gear isn’t the reason for the MD flipping over.  Derotation in the flare, excessive Gs from that, and the wing being the failure point are (a boiled down simplified version of) what flips them.

Dad was a pilot for Delta, so yeah, I got to ride around in a lotta planes.

Airstairs at CVG, "When the power goes out.....Thieves will be about!"

Delta has the honor of flying at the same time.
The 707(AA interchange west coast)DC-8 and the Convair 880.

And the 747, the DC-10 and the L-1011.

Delta's 727 ship #s 500 and above had a somewhat simplified Collins autoland system.

I rode in a Flying Tiger DC-8 stretch LAX-Japan.  240 military onboard, stopped in Anchorage, AK to refuel at 2 am and everyone deplaned for about 2 hrs to an empty terminal.  15 minutes later another plane landed and it was the Miss USA pageant.  50 beautiful girls and 240 GI’s.  My first overseas tour started with great luck.

I think everyone is misunderstanding my post.  The weather that forced 191 down no more made the L10 a shitty plane than a random part failure which brought down 232 made the DC10 a shitty plane.

A couple of near misses though. TWA had at least one dual engine failure and a spar failure that was less than 10 minutes from a crash.

I don’t buy the official report for the JFK accident either.

It was possibly the best business jet cabin I’ve ever been for the size.

When you walk through a Gulfstream, Falcon or Hawker it’s no contest. You’ve got to get to repurposed jet transport for the same feel.

Four engines was a function of the USAF requirements with straight jet engines.

The plane itself is just remarkably overbuilt.
