One of my favorites in this regard is bread. Coarse, dark breads are now seen as for more refined palates but was the very definition of poor peasant fare.

@outofbattery - here's a historical note that may interest you:

Königswalde, Neumark 1760

The third revolt, which resulted from the pride in their trade of the guilds, occurred in 1760 when the two corps under Prince Henry and Generallieutenantvon der Goltz combined in the Neumark. The Feldkriegscommissariat ordered that the bakeries of both corps be combined at Königswalde. The Silesian bakers of the von der Goltz corps, who were white bread bakers, refused to work with the Prussian bakers of Prince Henry`s corps, on the grounds that they were only black bread bakers, and were therefore beneath them. The Silesian bakers considered the order from the Feldkriegscommissariat so insulting to their pride as bakers, and the bitterness between the two groups was such, that the only solution was to keep the two groups separate, and there were duly two bakeries outside the town, on opposite sides of it.

I like all breads black, white and brown.

Way back when they fed it to prisoners, and got complaints because the prisoners were having to eat it several times a week.

Funny.

Correct. And I agree with the others that lobster is overrated. I worked at a seafood market as a teenager, could have had it every day if I wanted to. For the cost, pass. When it was poor people food? Yeah, maybe sometimes.

Yup; this.

If you do try Monkfish OP, make sure it's adequately cooked. It can have worms....which are fine to eat in the fish after cooking.

As a Mexican-American, I know about how fads totally fuck up the prices of meats. I remember buying cow tongue and cheek meat for cheap. Hell, beef fajitas used to be cheap as hell, too. Even menudo (beef tripe) is expensive and don't get a heart=attack when you see the price of honeycomb tripe!

OP, some of the responses in this thread are outright retarded...........

Living in Florida, and having the opportunity to catch some spiny lobster in the morning and cook them for dinner may make me a little biased.

Having said that, I tried the cod/boil/lemon thing AKA, "poor man's lobster".

Doesn't come close.  As a matter of fact, I wished that I would have just baked the cod in butter sauce, put a nice crust on the top.  It would have been way better.

If you really want a great seafood dish, find yourself some fresh hogfish.  Better than lobster.

The rest of you should get out of, well, I just don't know what to say.......

I've tried making poor man's lobster a couple times and I'm too "poor" to have ever had real lobster. I don't know if I botched cooking it or not, but if that's what lobster tastes like, I'm good. I'll stick to stuff like shrimp and crawfish.

You need better friends. And it's illegal to eat crawfish without drinking beer, so if you show up with a case or 2 of Bud Lite, or whatever the popular beer in your AO is to fill the community ice chest, you jump straight to the front of the all you can eat line.
