I do get tired of hearing it discussed by people who have no fucking clue what they are talking about.

One shot's all it takes.

Close enough if you're shooting a .45.

Knock a man down.

When you're shooting .45, all you need is 8 rounds.

Blah blah blah blah
Yes, that shit is irritating.

I like the round just fine but I'm tired of my 1911.  Last time I went out shooting I shot all kinds of guns, including my last 1911 (had 2 at one point).  I'm seriously considering selling/trading it because I'm just bored with the gun.  Its been reliable and I even carried it for a while, but I'm bored with it.

I wouldn't mind replacing it with a Glock in .45acp though.

If anything 9mm is technically overrated, as you will see its fans say "well all handgun rounds are pretty much the same" while absolutely refusing to acknowledge that "pretty much the same" does not mean exactly the same. Many 9mm fans are totally unwilling to admit to any performance differences of any kind, no matter how small or minute.

Oh, and there are the morons advocating 9mm FMJ for use against bears

9mm is an effective defensive pistol cartridge - but it has also dethroned the .45 as the most overrated pistol cartridge today.

So you are saying the 45 is OK for bear?  Gummy Bears?

My .454 is quite adequate for any bear.

It is certainly overrated.

During my time at CTD I saw more ignorant comments about .45acp than all other calibers combined. The one that always comes to mind was the guy who said he didn't need to buy mags for his 1911 because he just kept a round chambered and the gun cocked and locked. Since he never misses and the .45acp always knocks them down immediately, he felt no need to even put a magazine in his carry gun.

That's not a statement about the .45 as much as a statement about rabid fans of the .45.

Meanwhile, back in reality, I know of a negligent discharge at a place of employment, in a cubicle environment, where the round failed to penetrate the metal wall of the cubicle, perhaps saving a life. I guess that's a high quality cubicle, but if a thin sheet of pot metal is cover and not concealment we should probably be re-assessing the almighty wonders of the cartridge.

PS Pat Rogers is shooting 9mm now. Just sayin'.

It must have incapacitted him enough to allow for a few reloads. 17 rounds? Well I guess a GLock 21.........still call bullshit.

Not all that hard to believe actually. A good number of hits anywhere other than the heart or head to a tweaked out meth-head wouldnt drop him till the blood loss caght up with him.

9mm would NOT have done better with the same shot placment

Yes and No.

.45 is an excellent round for many purposes. It is powerful and very flexible.  It does have the mythic stopping power, and is really fucking fun to shoot.

However there is a lot of hype around it, and no matter how hopped up to load is, it isn't a brass and copper coated version of the wrath of God that some make it out to be.  The cost of .45 is actually I think the biggest detractor in the round, followed by the cumbersome packaging that it requires, and finally the recoil associated with it in compact and subcompact guns,

The most overrated common defensive/service round has to be .40s&w.

Lots of opinions out there but that's all that they are. They are just as right as they're wrong. You can look at the raw facts but at the end of the day, what works best for you is what's best. In my experience I get better groups from double tapping with a 9mm and I can buy twice as much ammo hence more range time.

It is a good round.  Better than 9mm on soft targets IMO.  But it is still overrated.  Very overrated when you get people who talk or collect more than shoot start running their mouths.

I defend my house with .45ACP, and CCW 9mm.  I'd have no problem using 9mm for HD.

I bought a .22 converson for my Kimber .45 - sweet: cheap to shoot, little recoil and not as loud.  Having said that, having actually shot someome - actually more that 'just someone' (along time ago in SE Asia) with a .45 with hard ball ammunition none the less, I can actually say, the right tool for the right job.  Big and slow has real knock down/stopping power.  The point (if you're not shooting targets) is to make sure 'they' go down and don't get back up .......... just saying ..............

I remember sitting in a roadside dive at noon eating lunch onetime and this big stout biker was sitting across the room and for some reason we locked eyes and he blinked first.  When he got up to leave he came and stood at my table glowering at me and that sonofabitch was huge, 300+ and not some old beergutted greybeard but somebody looking to make his bones.  I realized right then that a .45 was not overpowered.  I had visions of a full mag or two 230 gr. copper solids handloaded to redline +P+. It would be like shooting into a giant sack of grain, poomp, poomp. Trying to stop something like that before he mauled your ass, I realized nothing smaller than a .45 would do.
