Would the average officer be smarter than the average enlisted man/woman?

Apply this to the military as a whole.

yea they were smart enough to become officers so they
didn't have to peons for their whole careers.

Speaking in generalities, on average, Officers are more educated.

Intelligence is a whole 'nuther bag of dicks...

Well they are officers for a reason.

There’s a difference between book smarts and “street” smarts. In my experience officers that were not prior enlisted were book smart and didn’t know how to do their job outside of what the books said.

Are you talking an average E8 or E9?

Depends on the branch I'd say in the airforce the enlisted are smarter... remember the officer in the Air Force is over the enemy

They were smart enough to choose a higher paying, better quality of life occupation than the average enlisted man. So, I say on average, officers are smarter.

They are smarter as in book smart.

Intelligence is another story.

Common sense favors the enlisted.

"Street smart" is something dumb people say when they want to use the word "smart" to describe themselves.

More educated? For the most part yes.

Smarter? I would judge that on a case by case basis.

More arrogant? Absolutely no doubt there.

Average? Yeah, probably.

Now, there's tons of really stupid officers. And tons of really smart enlisted guys. But the enlisted guys can generally win on the "this guy is really dumb" competition, and that brings it down a lot.

The outlying enlisted guys in the bottom end really fuck up your average.

I would also suggest that absolute smartest 1% are equally worthless.

I've seen genius enlisted; I've seen Forrest Gump types enlisted.
I've seen genius officers; I've seen idiot officers.

Sounds cliche, but officers, warrant officers, NCOs, and enlisted all have a role to play.  Each of those categories has their own nuances about what they are responsible for, what is acceptable behavior, what they can get away with (not necessarily bad).

Take a E-3, put him in charge of a bunch of other E-3's and he'll start acting like a NCO.

Take a big group of Lieutenants with a Major in charge (i.e. a PME setting) and they are going to act like privates.  Take those same Lieutenants and put one of them in charge of a Platoon and they start acting like an officer again.

Is one smarter than the other? Across the board I'd say no.  They are just different in some intangible way.

On average officers are smarter than enlisted but there are of course notable exceptions.  During the 1980's I went into the Navy to learn how to be a computer technician.  I had a BA in Psychology but I was becoming obsessed with computers but did not want to be a starving college student again.  I went enlisted with a 99 ASVAB.

During my enlistment I met many incredibly smart enlisted persons.  At my "C" school I had E5 and E6 instructors who were every bit as intelligent and polished as my professors at the University.  Some of the most respected officers in the Navy are Warrent Officers and LDO's who came up through the ranks.

No they are idiots mostly. Enlisted know what's going on and practical solutions. Officers have no idea what's going on and ask for unpractical things. But don't get me wrong there's some officers who served enlisted first and have a better head on their shoulders. But officers are more book smart having a college degree.

I was both.  The night before I was commissioned, a bright light shown down on me and gave me instant smartness.  From that day on I was the smartest MoFo in the valley.  My smartness was known far and wide and all who witnessed it were duly impressed.

They defiantly are more educated as a whole.  The barrier to entry for enlisted is a high school education, the requirement for officers is a bachelor's degree.

They also have a different focus in their ongoing professional development that looks at a higher level.

Are they smarter as in having a higher IQ on average?  Probably a bit to be honest.

An officer is under a much larger scope of scrutiny as their decisions affect more people more often.

LT gets his platoon lost and 40 dudes call him a moron for it. Only times you get pissed at Joe are when you have to pick him up for uppercutting a stripper at a bar downtown

Both ranks are filled with great and intelligent people filling different roles, sometimes they both have losers

I'll catch some flak for this, but I think the whole mustang>non-mustang thing is overblown based on what I saw.  There are good & there are bad prior enlisted officers, but anecdotally I personally saw more bad.

The biggest cringeworthy, embarrassing situation I ever saw was a former NCO turned 2LT.  What you can say/do in front of Soldiers as a NCO is not the same as what you can say/do as an officer in front of Soldiers.

The biggest mess I was ever involved with, which took hundreds of man hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix, was caused by a former SFC turned 1LT who willfully lied/obstructed/abused his role as a check & balance in the system to cover up some shady stuff by his NCOs.

But that's just my opinion.  *kicks over beehive and runs*

BTW, this thread needs more @sylvan

The quality of officers lately, even from "prestigious" commissioning sources is god awful.

Through the hard work of the officers and their E8/E9 lackeys we have basically done away with the NCO Corps and have substituted E4/E5/E6/E7 baby sitters.

The enlisted are just fucked.

Not sure if most of the military, in any paygade, is in line to stake out "smart" as a descriptor right now.

It's comparable to asking who is smarter, the MVD clerks or the janitors at the court house.
