I don’t give a crap if you want kids or not.

But I do wonder if couples who “will never have kids” regret not having kids later in life.

It’s easy to say you don’t want kids when you’re in your 20’s.

Anyone willing to admit they missed the boat and regret it?

Just curious

Had a conversation with my brother-in-law (BIL) a few years ago when he was visiting. He and his wife chose to not have kids. They like their lifestyle to much, and in my book more power to 'em. Conversation turned to "point of children" much like this thread. I really didn't have what I thought was a good answer for him, but I did tell him that in a few decades when his parents are dead, all his aunts and uncles are dead, and we are old people and maybe his wife (or mine) has passed on he won't have anyone to spend time with on holidays, or anyone to visit (he lives on the left coast, and we in the upper mid-west so we already only see each other once or twice per year).

I'm not making this my argument for having kids, but perhaps it's a perk of it. Eventually we all get old some day, and our friends, co-workers, acquaintances, etc. will start to die off, or see us less and less as they spend more time travelling or with their kids and grand-kids. Family and being part of a group is important to a lot of people. Without kids, many people may find themselves alone at some later stage of life. Of course, having kids is no guarantee they will be there at that later stage of life (they could die early, or hate your guts and never want to see you, etc.), but it greatly improves the chances of having family to be around in your golden years.

this may only be because of my master race blood, but most of you don't have blood lines worth keeping. from a social perspective, there are enough orphans as it is. instead of having your own subpar white kids, why not adopt?

kids are great only for boring people. if you just sit at home all day and watch tv, kids are more meaningful than that. for people who don't suck at everything, they kill a lot of time with almost no return. i want to see how close i can come to a professional athlete in several sports. i have several long term projects that may work out to revolutionize some industries. staying abreast of various fields of interest - bio, chem, phys, mech eng, mat sci, neuro, quant mech, etc.

even if it's a biological obligation, it's still condition dependent. many animals will not breed under duress or under dissatisfactory conditions. america especially is reaching those times in a hurry. the reason it's not a biological imperative is because that's what society is. without which, killing the people around you is a fairly normal thing to do. simply look at dindu culture. we curb impulses to create a society for other advantages - usually for most people, other advantages far outweigh the cost of suppressing biological impulses. even at minimum wage, you have heating and running water and don't have to fight for your life too often.

my friends now have kids. i realize now that i made the right decision to skip kids. holy shit did i make the right decisions.
the more educated tend to have less kids. while dindus have like 30 of them and think they've accomplished a lot in life because they have kids. hopefully it's a sign that people here are more educated than dindus.

Why not church?
View Quote
Before I got married I dated quite a bit. I generally restricted myself to women who were regularly in church.

Of course not all of them were. You look at an online dating profile and a lot of people will list Christian as their religion even if they don't really believe in it.

I dated a few of those too. Usually it's a case that they put in Christian because their parents are/were and they went to church as kids but hadn't been back in years.

I made an interesting discovery. Churched women my age were
consistently the most emotionally immature, unstable, and unpleasant. They were bratty and spoiled. They were self entitled, self righteous, and self centered. Worse, these behaviors were encouraged. This was true across multiple churches and multiple conservative denominations.

The church has lost its collective mind on the proper way to raise children and this is one of the fruits of it.

Conversely, the non Christians I dated were uniformly more stable, more sensible, more emotionally healthy, and had more common sense. Spending time with them was relaxing, not trying. They weren't spoiled brats.

The Bible says not to be unequally yoked. That is literally the only thing that kept me from giving up on dating women who are regularly in church.

I don't like saying it but facts are what they are. Churched women seem to be particularly toxic on average, and that toxicity is cloaked in religious approval and encouraged by poor teaching.

I ended up getting lucky. I would not want to be in the position of looking again. I don't know what to say to young Christian men...other than good luck. The pool available to them has issues, and the leaders in the church will dismiss their concerns and needs as unimportant while encouraging some of the worst behaviors in their potential spouses. I have no useful answer to offer for this.

there's nothing i enjoy more than hearing this type of talk from people who end up having liberal kids.

kind of defeats the purpose, no?

i've counted more "help my son/daughter is a liberal" threads on this forum than anywhere else i've ever been.

i had kids. two sons. they're both conservative, moral, hard-working people. i'm proud of it.

but i have no illusions. there was no guarantee they would end up that way. none whatsoever. it was entirely of my own doing and even then it could have just well failed.

that's why i don't irrationally hate "kid-free" people the way some here do. because they made a choice - and i respect their right to do it.

if you believe that your kids will grow up to emulate all of your ideals or agree with everything you stand for and make all of your sacrifices worth it, then i'm not sure if you even live in the real world. it's a game of luck. you might get lucky like i did.

but what if you don't?

Bingo!  I have a few friends that enjoy the whole experience of parenthood but most of them are quite stressed and unhappy about it.  I am not saying they don't love their kids but many say that if they had a time machine they would NOT do it again.   Some tell me how having kids is the greatest thing ever and then yell at their kids until veins pop out of their foreheads and gripe about almost every aspect of parenthood so there is a real disconnect.

I wonder if a lot of the pressure others put on the child-free to have kids isn't just "misery wanting company?"

I wouldn't trust these grown children to watch my goldfish let alone a kid. The sad part is in five years when they turn 40 they will want a baby and will adopt a minority child from the third world and raise it to be a socialist

"Fuck trophy" is more acceptable.  It doesn't carry the same tone of resentment by the user.  It's more like "hey, she likes to fuck, was knocked up and had a baby".

"Crotch fruit" sounds like it originates from a spoiled adolescent with sudden online access to his parents computer, and is unable to come to grips with the fact that he's not the center of the universe.

It's a sensitive issue, because not everybody can have children.

97% of people want children.  We're all wired that way.  However, if we can't find the right mate, or we are physically or mentally incapable of raising progeny, then our survival requires that we decide "I don't want crotch fruit..too annoying...too expensive... and anyway...the World is too fucked up, and heading for disaster....t'wood be a crime, to subject a child to that dark, dystopian future...".

So, they get Dogs instead.

And soon, Robots.
