@sywagon

Would dissecting the second one help?

Everything helps, but close up, with the top & bottom (can be separate pics obviously) in focus is where to start. Often the spore print is visible (e.g. the brown dusting in the Ganoderma pic, which is decent). It doesn't have to be artistic and you can cut them off the wood or pick them and put them in good light with some turned up and some laid sideways to see the cap. My phone is a cheap motorola tracfone and it will get really close with good details no problem.

ETA: this is a decent diagnostic pic. These were cut at the base to keep them clean (yes they were delicious) but there can be important features lost that way:

Found these the other day when I was looking for rattlesnakes. Left them there but took a pic to show a friend who eats mushrooms.

No idea if it's true or he's right but he said they look like "big laughing jim"-mildly toxic and cause fits of uncontrollable laughter.Attachment Attached File

Found a hive of chanterelles nearby over the weekend. We’ve been grubbing in them in our dinners the last two days

Your friend should not be eating anything with gills, ever. Not even a little close, and I bet they don't have gills. Assuming those are on that wood, and don't even have gills underneatn, try Tyromyces chioneus or Oligoporus ceasius (similar but stains blue).

Assuming you aren't being silly, a variety of Amanita muscaria. Better to let the reindeer eat them and collect their pee.

I didn't even check for gills. I know so little about mushrooms that I don't trust myself to ID a morel. Left them on the wood, just took a phone pic and sent it.

Fuck all mushrooms right in their face.  Who eats that gross dead non-plant shit, let alone pick up wild unknown possibly poisonous shit and eat it.  Ain’t nobody got time for that.  I’d rather hug and kiss some poisonous snakes, at least I know what I’m dealing with.  That’s like eating the meteor shit from Creepshow or something.  Fuck all that

I saw dozens and dozens of them deer scouting one fall. All among pine trees.

Yea, I know what they are.
