Its a terror attack.. I'm seeing smiling arabs on twitter and other feeds. If some mosque was burning somewhere, I am sure 90% of the replies would be genuine concern for the loss of historical artifacts and culture and definitely wouldn't be "I'll have a coke" or similar things, right? Pot meet kettle. |

Funny, I started a thread about the church attacks in Paris about a week ago, and I actually linked to it twice now because of other church attacks.
And, for the record, yes, I know I'm being "that guy", but it seems pretty relevant There were 1045 recorded cases of church vandalsim in Paris last year But I agree with those that are suspicious, theres good reason to be. |

In 1996, the La Fenice Opera House in Venice burned down. It was 200 years old. The cause was arson, the fire was lit by disgruntled construction workers at about the same time of day--7pm.

Quoted: This photo actually provides some relief. The stone vaulting that makes up the ceiling of the cathedral has not collapsed, meaning it's possible most of the damage from the burning roof has not made its way into the actual church. This is a photo of the top of a vault in Salisbury Cathedral, which was constructed around the time Notre Dame was with similar techniques. The piece of lumber you see in the top left of the photo is of a wood truss from the roof, the sloped structure taking up most of the photo is stone that makes up the interior vaulted ceiling. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9c/Salisbury_Cathedral%2C_top_of_vaulted_ceiling_over_nave.jpg/2560px-Salisbury_Cathedral%2C_top_of_vaulted_ceiling_over_nave.jpg |

Husband (architect and engineer) pointed out that whoever the contractor on this Notre Dame renovation was, they're legally and financially fucked now. That got me curious about the firm ... which led to some old articles and, oh man, the aftermath of this is gonna be messy ...

I don't think this was a ROPer event or even a construction accident; I think the Catholic Church set the fire so they could get the insurance money.

I wonder how all of the stonework will handle the cooling off process? Uneven contraction, joint opening and moving. Not to mention what the fire already did to the stone.

This thing took 200 years to build, can you imagine our generation down to our grandchildren agreeing on something longer than 10 years or even 10 minutes to be able to acomplish something like this ever again.
