Thoughts on Old Rip Wheeler? Is it like a generic/bottom shelf Pappy???
The local bourbon FB group must have done a group buy because everyone is flashing pics of their bottle. Thanks |

Figured out why no one commented on Traveler's...because it's not bourbon but instead celebrity low end Canadian whiskey.
Quick question...if a friend asks where you got a bottle...do we give them exact coordinates or is it customary to be vague and gotta guard the source even under threat of death?? ?? Just trying to figure out the bourbon drinkers code of ethics. Thanks! |

I don’t know how close to the NY border you are, but I can pretty much find Buffalo Trace at every liquor store here. I had no idea there were people in other places chasing it.
Come to NY for less government control. Wow, that felt weird to say. |

I live in Kentucky and just called a few stores, they have 750ml Buffalo Trace for $34.

If you are just buying for guests at your in house bar then having a few samplings is one thing.
If you like bourbon you don't need to go to all the crazy hunting stuff. There is a lot of good bourbon out there. Find a local store with a good selection and buy all your stuff from there. Get to know them. They can point you to a lot of different things to try and you will find great stuff at all price points. The key is having a guide who knows what you like to help point you to the right stuff. Its a fun process. I have stuff that goes under my bar in the cabinet for guests for mixing...and stuff on top that is for sipping. |

pa state stores charge full msrp which is $29.99 for a 750ml, $55 for the 1.75L. Not sure how much 350s and 1Ls go for because the state stores don't get them. it's great when you can catch a blantons for $72 out the door but most shelfers are higher than everywhere else because there's no competition. I am happy to help you find BT at retail, the last drop was the week of the 14th, so if deliveries are every 4-6 weeks you should check your local premium collection store next week through the end of the month. be there whatever day they get their deliveries, if you work 9-5 everything will be gone by the time you get there on the way home. Once you score, you will know when to be there & when not to. |

I just built a bar with three shelves and I'm thinking bourbon is going to cannibalize the others if I allow it to. But that's an impressive collection. I need to diversify like that. As for following what drops, that's pointless in this state. Across the border in Jersy not so much....I nailed a bottle last week that way. Thanks |

Someone I know, who has collected spirits for a dozen years, recently decided to divest himself of a few bottles he owned multiples of. They included:
Blantons, EH Taylor Small Batch, Weller 12, Weller Antique 107, and Elmer T Lee. He is not internet savvy and asked his adult daughter for help in selling them. Within thirty minutes, she sold all five bottles by posting online.. Total take: $950.00. He was flabbergasted. |

View Quote I'm less concerned specifically about the BT at this point because I found someone willing to trade me one of my bottles for a handle of it. However, the other "allocated" stuff...even though it might not be worth the secondary market pricing, I would still like to have the experience of trying. So a bottle of ER and Blanton's... sure I would love to find that! But like you're saying, unless you line up outside the store...won't find it. And I was told by one store that people line up at 6am for a 9am opening on the day of delivery. I got all KINDS of squirrely responses when I tried asking HOW those people KNEW to be there! Again, prompted me to start this thread because it seems extremely bizarre when compared to every other liquor out there! Like you need to have inside sources, you need to hack systems to track truck routes and shipments, you need to grease someone's palm to withhold from shipments. Just not seen anywhere else in the world of alcohol. So yes, would love to know how I can snag msrp or lower for those....just to taste and have a bottle. I own/operate two businesses, so I have ZERO interest in neck-bearding bottles of hooch! Thanks!! |

Spend all this money on something and never use it. At least their wives are still virgins |

Buffalo Trace is very hard to find around here also. Occasionally stores will get a shipment and they fly off the shelves within hours.
I think the best way to score a bottle is to join a local Bourbon Club, like on facebook. Because there are people in those clubs that visit liquor stores every morning as a hobby looking for rare bourbons to show up… And after they get their bottle, they’ll make a post with a photo of the bottle(s) and location. Then other members will start posting OTW….. OTW…… OTW…. Got a bottle…. Got a bottle…. Got a bottle….. And within an hour or two someone will finally reply “dang they’re out”. ?? So I LOVE Buffalo Trace because I think its a well balanced Bourbon. And its between $30-$50 a bottle depending on the size. But it’s not a bourbon that I would let myself get price gauged for…. Or drive clear across town in the middle of a rain storm for. |

Smokewagon is sourced from Indiana, meaning it's MGP distillate like 90% of the bottles sitting on the shelf most people never heard of.
Whether the label says Pinhook, Brother's Bond, Old Soul. Oak + Eden, Nulu, Penelope, Old Elk, High West, Smokewagon, Redemption, Nashville Barrel Co, etc they are all buying barrels from MGP. That's not to say MGP is'n t capable of making decent whiskey but you are not getting a small batch craft product like some of the labels would like you to believe, quite the opposite. |

You have to wait in line during a special drop if you want Buffalo Trace around here.

The UCUF and Small Batch are both highly regarded. That being said, I had a Smoke Wagon barrel pick that was sublime at $100 / bottle and one that was just OK for the same price. |

They got hundreds of 50ml bottles for the big "drop" a week ago. 1 per customer. Here's one that doesn't make sense to me...
Elijah Craig 18yr - $199.99 - 18 years in the barrel -full shelf of it locally for quite a while -not allocated Buffalo Trace bourbons are allocated, significantly cheaper all day, not aged close to 18yrs (mostly), and people line up for them. Make it make sense. Thanks! |

Make it make sense. Thanks! View Quote EC-18 is good stuff, but not a lot of people will jump into $200+ per bottle for a drinker, and there's not nearly as much secondary demand for that bottle compared to anything BT. Now if it was certain releases of EC barrel proof that got really high reviews, those probably get scooped up fast be cause they're reasonable MSRP ($80) and there is more secondary demand that interests the resellers. The mid market BT products that MSRP between $50-125 or so are really the sweet spot for amateur resellers because their MSRP is manageable for most to through down on a whim, and demand is so high they're basically guaranteed to sell it fast for a profit. Compared to something like EC-18, that has a higher cost of investment and with less demand, you might only get an extra $50-100 markup on it and you might be sitting on it a while until a buyer comes along because it's just not a sought after. |

I might would consider that 18 year old EC to be honest. Maybe. But not for you OP. There just isn’t much reason for you to be buying $200 bottles at this point in your hobby.
