That is a possibility, but I don't think it is the most likely one. Because, as I previously stated, there have been several major stories making serious allegations that were later found to have serious inaccuracies or were totally wrong.

I agree with other posters that the SCO is trying to tamp down on the hysteria, but that may not be the complete rationale for the SCO coming out for the first time and contradicting a story.

Besides, I've read the Buzzfeed several story times very carefully, and I never got the impression that the leak came from the SCO. The leak almost certainly came from SDNY, or an investigator from somewhere like the FBI not attached to the SCO.
